Description

CASE FOR PRINTING TYPE Filed July 26, 1965 T l I I INVENTORS Z w m a United States Patent 3,275,329 CASE FOR PRINTING TYPE Heiman G. Lieberman, Evansville, Ind., and Jay Benjamin Lieberman, White Plains, N.Y. (6050 Kennedy Blvd. E., West New York, NJ. 07093); said Heimau G. Lieberman assignor to said Jay Benjamin Lieberman Filed July 26, 1965, Ser. No. 474,612 3 Claims. (Cl. 276-44) The present invention relates to a case for printing type, and more particularly to a new and novel soft carrying or storage case for printing type which is compact, light in weight and, at the same time, highly effective in use.
'A's'is known, prior devices for receiving and storing type used-in the printing trade were mostly made of wood or metal and represented weight and bulkiness to move about, as well as inconvenience in storage. In this connection, and more specifically, these prior devices generally included a wooden receiving frame having a series of lattice-like fixed perpendicular partitions defining relatively large compartments for the usual arrangements of type storage, in accordance with type setting practice. Moreover, the aforesaid compartments were fixed in size, limiting the amount of type which could be received in any given space.
By virtue of the instant invention, the applicants herein have provided a new and novel sof storage or carrying case for type which is light in weight, compact, convenient in use, and which, at the same time includes, where desired, a cover for preventing any intermixing of the type contained within the case during movement, as well as for providing a dustproof feature. The applicants new and novel invention is preferably made from lightweight plastic materials which provide pliability, minimum weight characteristics, and a degree of ease in portability allowing for convenient use of the case in all cations. The aforesaid pliable nature of the material fomiing the case permits over-all compactness, ready finger entry to the stored type, and a give factor which permits more type character storage, all of which represent advantages over the earlier rigid compartmentalization, i.e. the fixed perpendicular wall-defined type storage compartments. Moreover, the instant invention is readily manufactured, and represents, in form, economies to the manufacturer, as well as to the ultimate purchaser.
Accordingly, the principal object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel soft case for printing yp Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel soft type case for printing type which is compact, light in weight, and yet marked with sufficient strength characteristics to represent durability to the user, in use for storage and/ or in transporting.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel carrying and/ or storage case for printing type made from a lightweight pliable material which permits ready finger entry to the storage compartments thereof and a flexibility for adding more type characters into any given storage compartment.
A still further and more general object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel soft case for printing type having an associated cover which positively prevents any intermixture of the type during transporting; which may be arranged in any desired type storing pattern; which provides for the dustproof storage of type; and, which is readily manufactured in accordance with mass production standards.
Other objects and a better understanding of the present invention will become more apparent from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein 3,275,329 Patented Sept. 27, 1966 FIG. 1 is a top plan View, partially fragmentary, showing a new and novel soft case for printing type in accordance with the teachings of the instant invention; and,
FIG. 2 is a view in vertical section, also partially fragmentary, taken at line 22 of FIG. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, showing still further details of the applicants new and novel invention.
For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the invention, reference will now be made to the embodiment illustrated in the drawing and specific language will be used to describe the same. It will nevertheless be understood that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended, such alterations and further modifications in the illustrated device, and such further applications of the principles of the invention as illustrated therein being contemplated as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
Referring now to the figures, the applicants new and novel case for printing type 10 comprises, in a typical form of the invention, a bottom or receiving member 11 defined as a flattened surface with upstanding edges, which, preferably, for reasons of weight, may be made from a high impact polystyrene. Disposed within the bottom member 11 is a type-receiving member 12, arranged with a plurality of cavities 12a of variable size therein for receiving a font of type.
The type-receiving member 12 is preferably made from pliable or flexible vinyl through a conventional vacuum-forming process, although, and as a :matter of further example, polyethylene plastic would also be a satisfactory material. In any event, whatever final choice of material may be, a high degree of pliability is provided in each of the type-receiving cavities 12a, so that, when in use, and even in the smaller compartments, the type is readily removed through positive finger entry during the type setting operation.
Actually, and as should be understood, the partitions between the various type receiving cavities 12a are relatively firm, thereby retaining proper definition between such cavities 12a but, in any event, are pliable to a degree for allowing additional type to be stored therein by pushing out into surrounding cavities, where the latter are not already filled to capacity, being unlike prior fixed perpendicular partitions where increased storage could be accomplished only by making the respective cavities larger. An extremely lightweight over-all unit is achieved through the materials selected for the bottom member 11 and the type-receiving member 12. Moreover, if desired, indicia may be disposed on the bottom surface of the cavities, on either side, to assist in the proper placement of the printing type.
A cover 14 may also be provided, for example, for dustproof type storage or for ease in transporting, which cover is also preferably made from a high impact polystyrene material. In one form of the invention, the cover 14 is adapted to be secured onto the outer body member 11 through a snap type fit, but, it should be obvious that a strap (not shown) or other arrangements, might also be employed for maintaining the case in assembled transporting condition.
A flexible material layer 15, such as a preferred soft pliable foam, as polyurethane, for example, may be disposed within the cover 14 so that, when assembled with the bottom member 11 and the type-carrying member 12, the partitions in the latter between the various cavities 12a extend into such material layer 15. It should be understood, therefore, in this connection, that by reason of such arrangement, any movement of the type from one cavity 12a to another, during movement, is foreclosed.
Moreover, and further, if desired, the material layer 3 15 may be slightly slitted in the pattern'defining the type-receiving cavities 12alin the type-receiving member 12, but this would be a matter of ultimate choice insofar as over-all usage is concerned.
From the preceding, it should be apparent that the like cushion-type material, and, may also, in the alterna-- tive, have a grooved etfect on its undersurface for positive type control during movement.
Moreover, although a bottom or receiving member 11 is disclosed in the drawing, the invention is equally and effectively practiced by use of the type-receiving member 20 12, by itself, on a supporting member ,or suface, es-
pecially for straight storage purposes. 'Thus, the pre-- ceding description should be considered illustrative and not as limiting the scope of the following claims:
We claim: 7
tic body member having upturned edges, aplastic removable integral innerliner' having 'a plurality of vari- 1 able size, printing type-receiving cavitiesdefined by pliable partitions therebetween, and a plastic cover seletively sealing said printing type in said cavities.
2. The portable case for carrying printing type ,of claim 1 where said plastic'cover has a plastic foam cush-,
, ioning layer on the undersurface thereof to confine. said 1. A portable case for printing type. comprising a plasprinting type in said cavities. Y
3. The portable case for carrying printing type 10f claim 1 where said plastic cover has an undersurface configuration complementary to the configuration of said cavities in said plastic removable integral innerliner.
