(Cl. 83-417) The present invention relates to cutting a moving web of paper and more particularly to the machine and device for accurately cutting the paper while the paper is clamped on both sides of the cutting knife.
Heretofore paper fed to printing machines has been cut by means of a serrated cutting edge lying between movable clamping blocks which clamping blocks engage a platen or folding roller to clamp the paper on both sides of the cutting edge during the cutting action. This prior structure has been objectionable because of excessive noise and excessive wear of the parts due to the hardness of the clamping members, the relative sliding motion and the inertia of the parts which had to be overcome during the rapid operation of the cutting machine.
An object of the present invention is to provide a paper cutting machine for rolling printing machines which uses resilient material to clamp the paper on both sides of a serrated cutting knife and to avoid the objections of the prior art structure.
A further object is to provide a knife holder for a web cutting machine which serves to maintain the knife in accurate position and serves to support the web clamping means in an accurate relation to reduce bearing strains, inertia and noise.
Other and further objects will be apparent as the description proceeds and upon reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a knife carrying roller and a folding roller with folding means and showing the cooperation of the rollers with their lateral adjustment to accommodate for different thicknesses of web.
FIGURE 2 is a radial section through a conventional prior art knife holder with clamping members spring pressed to clamp the web during the cutting action and showing the knife in end elevation.
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged radial section of the knife holder of the present invention showing the pair of casings, the pair of J-shaped knife holders with rubber-like inserts therein and showing the clearance for the exposed clamping surfaces of the rubber-like inserts.
Referring more particularly to FIGURE 1, a folding or platen roller 1 is provided with axially extending grooves at diagrammatically spaced locations on the periphery thereof with rubber-like inserts 2 in such grooves and a knife holding roller 3 is rotatable about its axis and is provided with an axially extending groove carrying a knife blade 4 having a serrated cutting edge C therein with the cutting edge registering with the rubber-like insert 2 to sever the web W of paper or the like which is fed between the rollers 1 and 3. Means are provided for adjusting the relative spacings between the axes of rollers 1 and 3 to provide for different thicknesses of web material and since such adjustments are conventional they are omitted for the purpose of simplicity.
The web material is fed between the rollers where it is severed by the knife 4 and the severed length of web S is deflected by deflector D causing the section S to be folded and fed between feed rollers FF in a known manner.
Heretofore the cutting knife 4 has been supported between Bakelite or fiber paper holders 6, 6' which are urged outwardly from casings 8, 8' by springs 5, 5' but such paper holders are prevented from leaving the cas- 3,288,007 Patented Nov. 29, 1966 ings by the engagement of shoulders 7, 7 on the paper holders which engage stops or projections 9, 9 on the free edges of the casings 8 and 8'. In such prior art apparatus as many as 32 springs 5 and 5' have been required and the hammering action obtained by the paper holders 6 and 6 striking the paper and clamping the paper against the roller 1 has resulted in excessively rapid wear and excessive noise at the speeds of 30 cuts per second and consequently the parts have worn and required replacement with attendant high production costs.
The present invention avoids this objection and referring more particularly to FIGURE 3, the knife holder and paper clamping device includes a pair of elongated casings 10, 10' of angle cross section with each including a heavy base flange and a thin flange extending from said base flange forming a rabbet in each angle with the free edges of the bases in juxtaposition and abutting the shank edge of the cutting blade 4 with the thin flanges extend ing from their respective bases in the same direction as the cutting edge of the blade 4. The casings are mounted in the peripheral channel in the knife holding roller 3 with the rabbets opening outwardly and an elongated knife holder 11 of J-shaped cross section is positioned in each rabbet with the outer surfaces of the long stem flange in registry with the free edge of the associated base and in clamping contact with the blade 4. The short stem flange of the J-shaped cross section knife holder is in contact with the thin flange of the cooperating casing but the free edge of such short stern flange terminates short of the free edge of the thin flange of its cooperating casing as clearly shown in FIGURE 3.
Rubber- like inserts 12, 12 are positioned and retained in the channel of the cooperating J-shaped knife holders 11 and 11' with the exposed surface of the inserts projecting beyond the flanges of the J-shaped knife holder so as to leave clearances 13, 13 between the knife 4 and the cooperating inserts to permit lateral displacement of the rubber-like material during the paper clamping action. Additional clearances 14, 14' are provided between the laterally extending ribs of the inserts 12, 12' respectively and the inner surfaces of the free edge portions of the thin flanges of the casings whereby when the cutting action takes place, the web is effectively clamped between inserts 12, 12' and the insert 2 to assure accurate and effective clamping action without excessive force between the clamping surfaces of the inserts 12, 12 and 2.
Since adjustments are provided for varying the spacing between the axes of the rollers 1 and 3, different thicknesses of materials can be eflectively cut by the serrated cutting edges C of the blades 4 and since the rubberlike inserts are of yielding material it is apparent that the clamping action is gradually applied and released without excessive hammering which occurred with the prior art structures such as that shown in FIGURE 2.
The web engaging surfaces of the inserts 12 and 12' include inclined surfaces 15, 15 which extend to the edge of the laterally projecting ribs 16, 16' and also include surfaces 17, 17' which are substantially perpendicular to the radially extending cutting blade 4 whereby the application of force in the clamping action is a gradual process thereby avoiding the hammering action resulting from the impact of the hard Bakelite or fiber paper holders 6, 6' of the prior art devices.
The expression :nubber like is used as a descriptive term since other y ie'ldable ,plastic materials may be used to produce the yielda ble clamping action and such materials as they are compressed may be deformed laterally into the spaces 13, 13' and 14, 14' to assure proper operation without excessive forces and also assuring long life of the paper holding and knife holding structures of the present invention.
It will be aparent that the knife 4 is effectively clamped between the casings 10, and knife holders 11 and 11 with the proper projection of the serrated cutting edge C to assure proper cutting action at all times. The radial adjustment between knife carrying roller 3 and platen or folding roller 1 makes it possible to keep the radial forces on the rollers at the desired optimum value without excessive bearing loads.
It will be apparent that changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the valid scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A cutting machine comprising a knife holder roller and a folding roller mounted for rotation in timed relation about parallel axes and for adjustment toward and away from each other, said cutting roller having a channel extending axially along the periphery thereof, a cutting device mounted in said peripheral channel comprising a pair of elongated casings of angle cross-section each including a heavy base flange and a thin flange extending from said base flange forming ra-bbets with the free edges of the bases in juxtaposition and the thin flanges extending from their respective bases in the same direction, said casings being mounted in said peripheral channel with the rabbets opening outwardly, an elongated knife holder of J-shape cross-section in each rabbet with the outer surfaces of the long stem flange in registry with the free edge of the associated base and the short stem flange in contact with the thin flange of the casing, rubber-like insert in the channel of each J-shaped knife holder projecting beyond the free edge of the long stem flange, an elongated cutting knife having a serrated cutting edge mounted between said bases and said long stem flanges and projecting beyond said long stem flanges, said rubber-like insert being spaced from the cutting edge of the knife to provide for lateral distortion, said folding roller having an elongated axi-ally extending peripheral groove for registry with the knife, an additional rubber-like insert in the groove of said folding roller whereby web material fed between the knife holding roller and cooperating folding roller is cut by said cutting knife while being clamped between the rubber-like inserts in the J-shaped channels and the additional rubber-like insert in the groove of the folding roller.
2. The invention according to claim 1 in which the rubber-like inserts in said J-shaped channels project beyond the long stem flange and the free edge of the short and a platen roller mounted for rotation about parallel axes and for adjustment toward and away from each other, said cutting roller having a channel extending axially along the periphery thereof, a cutting device mounted in said peripheral channel comprising a casing, a cutting knife mounted in said casing and projecting radially outward therefrom, rubber-like insert material in said casing spaced from the cutting edge of the knife to provide for lateral distortion, said platen roller having a peripheral groove for registry with the knife, an additional rubberlike insert material in the groove of said platen roller, whereby web material fed between the knife carrying roller and cooperating platen roller is cut by said knife while being clamped between the rubber-like insert material in the casing and the additional rubber-like insert material in the groove ofthe platen roller, the rubbenlike insert material being of a radial dimension such that the cutting edge of said cutting knife projects outwardly beyond the rubber-like insert material at all times.

A paper holding device for use with a cutting roller carrying a serrated cutting knife comprising a pair of elongated casings of angle cross-section each including a base flange and a flange extending from said base flange forming a rabbet with the 'rabbet of each casing facing the rabbet of the other casing and the free edges of the bases in juxtaposition, an elongated knife holder of J- shape cross sec-tion in each rabbet with the outer surface of the long stem flange in registry with the free edge of the associated base, rubber-like insert material in the channel of each J-shaped knife holder and projecting References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,038,336 2,113,843 4/1938 Kav-le 83-117 WILLIAM S. Claims (1)

1. A CUTTING MACHINE COMPRISING A KNIFE HOLDER ROLLER AND A FOLDING ROLLER MOUNTED FOR ROTATION IN TIMED RELATION ABOUT PARALLEL AXES AND FOR ADJUSTMENT TOWARD AND AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, SAID CUTTING ROLLER HAVING A CHANNEL EXTENDING AXIALLY ALONG THE PERIPHERY THEREOF, A CUTTING DEVICE MOUNTED IN SAID PERIPHERAL CHANNEL COMPRISING A PAIR OF ELONGATED CASINGS OF ANGLE CROSS-SECTION EACH INCLUDING A HEAVY BASE FLANGE AND A THIN FLANGE EXTENDING FROM SAID BASE FLANGE FORMING RABBET WITH THE FREE EDGES OF THE BASES IN JUXTAPOSITION AND THE THIN FLANGES EXTENDING FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE BASES IN THE SAME DIRECTION, SAID CASINGS BEING MOUNTED IN SAID PERIPHERAL CHANNEL WITH THE RABBETS OPENING OUTWARDLY, AN ELONGATED KNIFE HOLDER OF J-SHAPED CROSS-SECTION IN EACH RABBET WITH THE OUTER SURFACES OF THE LONG STEM FLANGE IN REGISTRY WITH THE FREE EDGE OF THE ASSOCIATED BASE AND THE SHORT STEM FLANGE IN CONTACT WITH THE THIN FLANGE OF THE CASING, RUBBER-LIKE INSERT IN THE CHANNEL OF EACH J-SHAPED KNIFE HOLDER PROJECTING BEYOND THE FREE EDGE OF THE LONG STEM FLANGE, AN ELONGATED CUTTING KNIFE HAVING A SERRATED CUTTING EDGE MOUNTED BETWEEN SAID BASES AND SAID LONG STEM FLNAGES AND PROJECTING BEYOND SAID LONG STEM FLANGES, SAID RUBBER-LIKE INSERT BEING SPACED FROM THE CUTTING EDGE OF THE KNIFE TO PROVIDE FOR LATERAL DISTORTING, SAID FOLDING ROLLER HAVING AN ELONGATED AXIALLY EXTENDING PERIPHERAL GROOVE FOR REGISTRY WITH KNIFE, AN ADDITIONAL RUBBER-LIKE INSERT IN THE GROOVE OF SAID FOLDING ROLLER WHEREBY WEB MATERIAL FED BETWEEN THE KNIFE HOLDING ROLLER AND COOPERATING FOLDING ROLLER IS CUT BY SAID CUTTING KNIFE WHILE BEING CLAMPED BETWEEN THE RUBBER-LIKE INSERTS IN THE J-SHAPED CHANNELS AND THE ADDITIONAL RUBBER-LIKE INSERT IN THE GROOVE OF THE FOLDING ROLLER.
