IMPROVEMENT IN BUTT-HlNeEs.

Specification forming pai-t of Letters Patent No. 32,927, dated July 30,1861.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GHRIsTIAN SHoLL, of Mount .I oy, inthe county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements on Loose-Jointed Right andLeft HandedButt orDoor Hinges; aiidI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference Inarked thereon, in which- Figure l is an elevation of that portion of the hinge which is secured to the frame or casing of the door, blind, or shutter; Fig. 2, a similar view of the same piece reversed in position; Fig. 3, an elevation of that portion of the hinge which is secured to the door, blind, or shutter; Fig. 4, a similar -view of the saine piece inverted; Fig. 5, a modification of the part shown in Figs. 3 and 1l.

Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The supporting portion A, which is secured to the frame of the door, blind,l or shutter, is substantially of the form represented in Figs. l and 2, the leaf A2 being of the usual size and shape, but projecting centrally in a plane from its round c, instead of tangentially, as in the corresponding piece of t-he common butt-hinge. The round c is situated at the foot of the leaf, and it has a spindle or pin P for supporting the other portion of the hinge, as shown. The screw-holes d cl are countersunk on both faces of the leaf, so as to prevent the screw-heads from projecting when secured either on the right or left side of a doorway.

The part B, which is secured to the door, blind, or shut-ter, and which is the movable portion of the hinge, consists of a leaf B', having the screw-holes countersunk on only one face thereof, and of a cylindrical socket f, situated suficiently on one side of the plane of the leaf laterally to adapt the hinge to right and left use, as will presently be described. This socket rests on the spindle of the part A. The part B, I usually make smaller than the part A for economy, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4:; but if desirable it may be made to correspond in size, as shown in Fig. 5, in which case the socket is made midway of its length. Thus arranged the two parts, as in the position represented in Figs. l and 3, when joined together are adapted to use on the left-hand side of a person entering a doorway with the door swinging toward him. For use on the opposite or right-hand side, with the door swinging the saine way, the two parts are in the position represented `iii Figs. 2 and 4, the part A being reversed or turned around, so as to present the opposite face of the leaf A, while the part B is inverted or turned upside down, so as to change the socket f relatively to the position of the part A, but with the saine face B outward. v

The advantage of having a butt-hinge that is equally adapted to right or left 'use is obvious. I ain aware that such have been before used; but my arrangement has several advantages over others with which I' am acquainted. It is as simple, cheap, and effective as' the ordinary butthinge, from which it differs essentially only in its twofold use, being of the saine form and put together in the same manner, and being as little limited in the extent of its turning inotion. The socket f, by projecting out laterally beyond the plane of the leaf B allows the door, blind, or shutter to close and iit closely and freely in its seat in the frame, the leaves of the two parts being sunk flush into the wood-work, as usual, and by merely inverting the part B, thereby reversing the action of its socket in relation to the turning of the door, the saine advantages are attained when used on the opposite side. By this arrangement, also, it is necessary to'countersink the screwholes on only one face of the leaf of the part B, which saving of labor, however insignificant it may be in a .single hinge, is of great vimportance in manufacturing large numbers of them.

I do not claim a right and left butt-hinge irrespective of the special device above described; but

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as anew article of manufacture, is-

The hinge composed of the two parts A and B, arranged and operatingsubstantially as specified.
