United States Patent Oflfice 3,294,463 Patented Dec. 27, 1966 3,294,463 DRAWER AND FASTENER COMBHNATION William H. Katferlin, Spring Creek, and Gene B. Hasbronck and Travers Q. Stohlberg, Corry, Pa., assignors to Corry Jamestown Corporation, Corry, Pin, a corporation of New York Filed June 28, 1965, Ser. No. 467,387 13 Claims. (Cl. 312-2345) This application is a continuation in part of application Serial No. 389,411, filed August 13, 1964, now Patent No. 3,252,746, granted May 24, 1966.
This invention relates to a handle, latching mechanism, and card holder for sliding drawers of desks, cabinets, and the like, and is more particularly directed to a handle that incorporates a finger actuated latch mechanism by which the operator may release the drawer for withdrawal from a closed or confined position. The invention also relates particularly to, in combination with a latch mechanism and drawer, a card holder of unique design.
In the prior application an improved drawer latching mechanism was disclosed. The present application discloses an improvement on the latching mechanism shown in the parent case, and in addition and in combination therewith, an improved card holder.
It is, accordingly, an object of the invention to provide an improved card holder in combination with a filing cabinet.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved latching mechanism in combination with a filing cabinet.
With the above and other objects in View, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a partial front view of a drawer according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an isometric view of the card supporting bracket;
FIG. 4 is an isometric view of a transparent, resilient, relatively rigid member for supporting on the front of the bracket shown in FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is an isometric view of the bracket shown in FIG. 3 with the latch mechanism attached thereto; and
FIG. 6 is an enlarged isometric view of the front of the drawer showing the index card being inserted into the :holder therefor;
FIG. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on line 77 of FIG. 6.
Now with more particular reference to the drawings, the file drawer front 10 is shown which may be of any of the usual type of file drawers used in steel filing cabinets or the like, or it could be a card file drawer, or a desk drawer. It is shown strictly for the purpose of illustrating an example of how the drawer latch and card support can be used in office furniture and other furniture.
The file drawer front has a front panel 11 that has a rectangular opening 12 therein. The drawer has a handle 14, which is a part of the bracket 25. The bracket 25 has a leg in the form of a plate-like flat supporting member 17, which has an inclined upwardly and rearwardly front surface and a horizontally disposed bottom leg 27. A horizontally disposed top leg 28 extends forward from the leg having the fiat surface, and the front edge of the leg 28 is turned downwardly at 14 to form a handle. The bracket may be supported on the drawer by welding or riveting or other well known fastening means.
In the embodiment shown by way of example, two spaced tabs 29 extend forward from the lower edge of the supporting member 17. These tabs extend through slots in the lower edge of window member 18. Two similar lateral tabs 55 extend forward from the side edges of supporting member 17. Tabs 51 are triangular in shape and they form upwardly bent continuations of top leg 28.
The front drawer panel has rearwardly extending triangular flanges 54 bent inward at each side of opening 12. A slot 57 is found in each flange 54. These slots 57 receive the outer ends of handle 14,. A short flange 53 is struck inward at the lower edge of opening 12 and tabs 29 underlie this flange as shown in FIG. 7. This prevents the bracket from moving relative to the opening 12.
Flange 52 of rear drawer panel 611 has a tab 61 which underlies the flange 62. Tabs 51 engage the lower side of flange 52 and rear panel 60 engages the end of bottom leg 27, as well as the upper rear part of bracket 25 thus holding it in place.
A transparent plastic window member 18 is supported on the bracket 25 and has a leg 31 at the lower side that underlies the horizontal bottom leg 27, and a vertical sheet-like portion that overlies the upwardly and rear- A wardly extending leg portion 17. The transparent window member 18 has notches 19 therein that are laterally spaced and are formed at the juncture of the horizontal and vertical portions of the transparent member. These notches receive the lugs 29, which are integral with the bracket 25.
The latch 23 is fixed to the connecting link 16 and extends l-aterally therefrom. The latch has a notch 42, which is adapted to receive a suitable drawer guide and to slide thereon. The hook 24 is integrally fixed to the latch 23 and will engage a suitable member on the furniture in the manner disclosed in the parent application.
The upper end of the connecting link 16 is rigidly fixed to the actuating bar 15. The actuating bar 15 extends laterally under the forwardly extending leg 28 of the bracket 25 and has a leg 45 that extends up through an opening 46 in the top of the bracket. The leg 45 has a lug 47 that overlies the top leg 28 of the bracket to limit the downward movement thereof.
In operation, the operator will insert his fingers under and through the opening 12 and engage the bottom surface of the actuating bar 15 and force it upward. This will lift the lug 47 off of the upper leg 28 of the bracket 25 and with it lift the connecting link 16 and the hook 24 to disengage the latch 23. When the operator releases the force of his fingers, the latch will drop down by gravity.
To replace a card, the operator inserts his fingers through the hole 21 in the leg 17 which is the inclined surface of bracket 25 and forces the transparent window member 18 to move forward so that a card 50 may be inserted between the transparent window member 18 and the inclined surface of leg 17. The resiliency of the transparent window member 18 will thus urge it to swing rearwardly, bring it backward and hold the card in position where it may be viewed through the opening 12.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claims.
