No. 441,432 Claims. (Cl. 220-65) My invention is directed toward a new and improved device for disposing of garbage.

It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved device of the character indicated which employs a disposable container.

Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the character indicated employing a disposable container in the form of an empty (used) cardboard milk carton.

Still another object is to provide a new and improved device of the character indicated which can be manufactured easily and inexpensively.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention in operative use.

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of another form of my invention with the cover of the inventive device in lowered or closed position.

FIG. 2a is a side view of the upper portion of the device of FIG. 2 with its cover in raised or open position.

FIG. 3 is a side cross sectional view taken along line 3-3 in FIG. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.

FIG. 4 is a side cross sectional view of still another form of my invention.

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of even still another form of my invention.

Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 3, there is shown a plastic hollow rectangular container having a cover 12 pivoted or hinged at one end to the open top whereby the cover can be opened or closed at will through use of knob 14 on top of the cover. When cover 12 is open, a used empty half gallon cardboard milk carton 16 is placed therein. (The top of this carton is open.) Container 10 can then be placed on top of a work table 18 having a sink 20. Garbage can then be scraped by a knife 22 off a plate 24 into the carton. When the carton is filled with garbage, it can be removed from the container and disposed of while an empty carton is placed in the container.

FIGS. 2 and 2a show a modification wherein the front panel of container 110 is cut down lower than its back panel to provide exposure of and improved access to the upper front edge or lip of enclosed carton 116 for easier scraping of garbage directly into the carton. Cover 112 is made correspondingly deeper in front than in back.

50 and 52 pivotally secured to each other at adjoining ends as shown at 54 rest inside the top open end of container 210. Member 50 is provided with a longitudinal slot 56 which rides on a pin 58 extending horizontally from the inner wall of the container. A fibrous sheet 60 is secured to the top of side of member 50. Another fibrous sheet 62 is secured to the top side of member 52. A flexible tab 64 connects the underside of cover 212 to the free end of member 52 whereby When the cover is lifted,

50 and 52 are lifted to the position shown in FIG. 4 in solid line and when the cover is close-d, the members are lowered to the position shown in dotted line. When cover 212 is opened the sheets 60 and 62 define a converging or funnel-like entry passage for garbage into carton 216 within container 210. The bottom panel of the container may be hinged and detachably latched to the side panels to allow easy insertion of an empty canton 216 into the container and easy removal of a garbage-filled carton from it without interference with the linkage or mechanism on which sheets 60 and 62 are mounted.

FIG. 5 shows a modification wherein cover 312 has a slot 70 and a vertical member 72 slidable in the slot and mounted in a horizontal slot 74 in a horizontal support member 76 depending from the bottom side of cover 12. When the enclosed carton 316 (not shown) is empty, member 72 is positioned below slot 70. When the carton is full or ready to be emptied, the bottom of member 72 rests on garbage and is raised until a portion of member 72 extends above slot 70 and displays the legend Time to Dump Out whereby the garbage-filled disposable carton should be removed.

While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.

I claim:

1. A device for disposing of garbage comprising (1) a hollow rectangular container open at one end and including a front panel and a back panel with the front panel being appreciably lower than the back panel at said open end and further including side panels sloping upwardly, at their upper edges, from the front panel to the back panel, (2) a cover hinged to said container at the open end thereof in such manner that the cover can be moved into and out of open and closed positions, and (3) acarton hollow and open at one end placed removably in said container, the open end of said carton being positioned adjacent but below said cover with the edge of the carton whereat its open end is defined being higher than the edge of the front panel of said container at the open end of said container.

2. A device according to claim 1 in which said carton is an empty, used milk carton.

3. A device for disposing of garbage comprising (1) a hollow rectangular container open at at least one end, (2) a cover hinged to said container at the open end thereof in such manner that the cover can be moved into and out of open and closed positions, (3) a carton hollow and open at one end placed removably in said container, the open end of said carton being positioned adjacent but below said cover with the edge of said carton whereat its open end is defined being at substantially the same height as the edge of the open end of said container whereat said cover is hinged to the container, and (4) funnel means hinged to the inside of said container and the underside of said cover and adapted to assume an extended, operative position at least partly outside said container to direct garbage into said canton when said cover is moved into open position and a closed inoperative position essentially wholly within said container when said cover is moved into closed position.

4. A device for disposing of garbage comprising (1) a hollow container open at one end, (2) a cover hinged to said container at the open end thereof in such manner that the cover can be moved into and out of open and closed positions, (3) a carton hollow and open at one end placed removably in said container, the open end of said carton being positioned adjacent but 'below said cover with the edge of said carton whereat its open end is defined being at substantially the same height as the edge of the open end of said container whereat said cover is hinged to the container, and (4) means for indicating when said carton is substantially filled with garbage comprising an element mounted with respect to said cover to be freely movable vertically through said cover for a limited length of travel and having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of said element being at a level within said carton at least somewhat below the edge of the open end of the carton when said cover is closed and the element is at the lower limit of its travel through the cover, and the element accordingly being raised through the cover as an indicator by its lower end bearing upon garbage within said carton when the carton is filled with garbage to a level closely approaching that of its open end.

5. A device for disposing of garbage comprising (1) a hollow container open at one end, (2) a cover hinged to said container at the open end thereof in such manner that the cover can be moved into and out of open and closed positions and said cover being characterized by a through-going slot, (3) a carton hollow and open at one end placed removably in said container, the open end of said carton being positioned adjacent but below said cover with the edge of said carton whereat its open end is defined being at substantially the same height as the edge of the open end of said container whereat said cover is hinged to the container, (4) a horizontal member secured to the underside of said cover and being characterized by a through-going slot aligned with the slot in the cover, and (5) a vertical member held in said horizontal member and slidable iii the slot therein and aligned with the slot in said cover, said vertical member having a first position substantially entirely below the slot in said cover and a second position in which at least a noticeable portion of it extends upwardly through the cover slot, and said vertical member being disposed to be raised from its first position to its second position by 'being borne upon at its lower end by garbage within said carton within said container.

Claims

1. A DEVICE FOR DISPOSING OF GARBAGE COMPRISING (1) A HOLLOW RECTANGULAR CONTAINER OPEN AT ONE END AND INCLUDING A FRONT PANEL AND A BACK PANEL WITH THE FRONT PANEL BEING APPRECIABLY LOWER THAN THE BACK PANEL AT SAID OPEN END AND FURTHER INCLUDING SIDE PANELS SLOPING UPWARDLY, AT THEIR UPPER EDGES, FROM THE FRONT PANEL TO THE BACK PANEL, (2) A COVER HINGED TO SAID CONTAINER AT THE OPEN END THEREOF IN SUCH MANNER THAT THE COVER CAM BE REMOVED INTO AND OUT OF OPEN AND CLOSED POSITIONS, AND (3) A CARTON HOLLOW AND OPEN AT ONE END PLACED REMOVABLY IN SAID CONTAINER, THE OPEN END OFF SAID CARTON BEING POSITIONED ADJACENT BUT BELOW SAID COVER WITH THE EDGE OF THE CARTON WHEREAT ITS OPEN END IS DEFINED BEING HIGHER THAN THE EDGE OF THE FRONT PANEL OF SAID CONTAINER AT THE OPEN END OF SAID CONTAINER.
