Description

Jan. 31, 19467 P, B, SHORE 3,301,467
MULTICOLORED LITHOGRAHED RECORD JACKET Original Filed April 22, 1964 n) b) )l2 'l V////////// ///////Y //////A United States Patent AO 3,301,467 MUL'rrCoLoRED LITHOGRAPHED RECORD JACKET This is a continuation of my copending application Serial No. 361,670, filed April Z2, 1964, now abandoned.
This invention relates to packaging and more part-icul-arly is directed Ito multicolored lithographed jackets for disc-type `phonograph records and the like.
Among the objects of the invention is to generally irnprove record jackets of the character described which shall be simple'in construction and lithographed both on front land rear faces in multicolor and inished with a gloss coating, which construction shall be capablefof being manufactured on automatic machinery in low cost quantity production, which shall eliminate the inefficiencies and spoilage inherent in t-he production of prior jacket constructions, which shall provide an improved spine construction t-o lassure the proper register of the title therewith, and which S-hall be practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obviou -and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists of features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement f parts which will Ebe exemplified in the construction hereinafter disclosedythe scope of the .application of which will be indicated in the claim following.
In the accompanying drawing in which 'an illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown:
FIG. l is -a perspective view of a record jacket showing the front face and spine, lithographed in multicolor and constructed in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the exterior surface of a blank lithographed in multicolor, die cut and scored prior to folding.
FIG. 3 is a perspective v-iew of the blank shown in FIG. 2 illustrating the manner of folding and adhesively sealing to com-plete the record jacket shown in FIG. 1.
FIGS. 4 and 5 are enlarged sectional views taken on lines 4-4 and 5 5 respectively, in lFIG. l.
FIG. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 6-6 in FIG. 2 showing the scoring along the spine, and
FIG. 7 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary sectional view through one of the 'walls of t-he jacket, such as on line 7-7 in FIG. 1, illustrating the lithographie .and coating layers.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 10 denotes a multicolor lithographed phonograph record jacket comprising a front panel 11 havin-g lithographed thereon a multicolor design 11a, a rear panel 12 having lithographed thereon multicolor descriptive and/or advertising matter 12a, .a spine 13 providing an end closure and having a title 13a printed in register therealong and a pair of liaps \'14 extending from -rear panel 12 and being folded over to provide upper and lower side closures 15.
ICC
Jacket 10 may be fabricated from -a 27-p0int clay coated cardboard sheet (not shown) suitably sized to have a plurality of jacket designs lithographed thereon, as for example, six repeat jacket designs arranged in two rows of three designs per row, each jacket design including design 11a, matter 12a and title 13a lithographed in multicolor directly on the clay coated surface of the sheet which is then provided with a protective coat of spirit varnish 16. The repeat jacket designs are then cut and scored to form lblanks B seen in lFIGS. 2 and 6 as having a pair of parallel scored fold lines 13b detining spine 13 and a pair of scored fold lines 14a, one between each flap 14 rand rear panel 12. Additional scoring in the form on lines 14h may be provided on flaps 14 to facilitate adhesive bonding of flaps L14 to the interior surface of front panel 11.
Flaps 14 may also be provided with centralized arcuate cutouts 14e to facilitate proper nesting of the record in jacket 10 in the Well understood manner.
The practical utility of the invention will now be apparent. After being lithographed in mutcolor with repeat jacket designs as hereinbefore described, the sheets are die cut and scored to provide individual blanks B each seen in FIG. 2 as having fold lines 13b defining spine 13 and fold lines 14a defining flaps 14 extending from rear panel 12. Record jacket 10, having front panel design 11a, rear panel matter y12a and spine title 13a all prepositioned in proper register, lithographed in multicolor and protectively coated with spirit varnish 16, may now be completed simply by applying adhesive A to flaps 14, tucking the latter under rear panel 12 along fold lines 14a while folding blank B along fold lines 13b so that front panel 11 and rear panel 12 are in registered overlying relation with interconnecting spine 13 extending at right angles thereto and adhesively securing aps 14 to the interior surface of front panel 11 as indicated in FIG. 3.
Where a lighter weight jacket is desired the invention contemplates using 20- or 24-point cardboard in place of the heavier 27point board. The multicolor lithographing may be any well known four-color process.
It is thus seen that there is provided an improved multicolored lithographed .record jacket whereby the several objects of this invention :are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. j
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as Various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it -is to be understood that all matters herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing .are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in -a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim -as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A multicolored lithographed record jacket formed of a unitary clay-coated cardboard sheet structure having a front panel overlying a rear panel integrally connected by an end spine; top and bottom closures formed by a pair of flaps extending from one of said panels; each flap being bent along scored fold lines and tucked under and adhesively secured to lche interior surface of the other of said panels; each of said flaps being provided with additional score lines to facilitate securing of said aps to the interior surface of the other of said panels; design and intelligence material imprinted directly upon said `clay coating in predetermined register with said panels and spine; said top panel, rear panel, and spine being provided with a protective coat of varnish on top of said design `and intelligence material imprinted thereon; scored fold lines extending between said spine and panels facilitating -a right angular corner therebetween; said clay-coated cardboard sheet having `a caliper of from 2O to 27 points.
