Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,106, dated August 10, 1861.

Be it known that I, S. M. SHERMAN, of Fort Dodge, in the county of XVebster and St-ate of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Splint Baskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,

reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a side sectional View of my in vention, taken in the line x x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a detached perspective view of parts pertaining to the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of splint baskets, those which are formed with upright splints or staves only. v

Theobject of the invention is to obtain a strong and durable basket of the kind specified, and one that will be ornamental and admit of being constructed very economically.

The invention consists in securing the inner and outer wires or hoops of the basket together, in connection with an arrangement of metal straps or plates applied to the lower parts of the staves or splints, substantially as hereinafter described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a circular piece of wood, which forms the principal part of the bottom of the basket, and may be of any desired diameter, according to the size of the basket. The bottom A has a recess or rabbet, c, made in its upper surface all around its edge, and in this recess or rabbet the lower ends of the splints or staves B are iitted and secured by small nails or tacks b.. The splints or staves are curved, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and they are made of taper form, and have rims c secured to their inner and outer sides at their upper ends, as shown clearly in Fig. l.

'lo the outer side of the lower part of each splint or stave vD there is secured a metal plate, C. These plates are secured in lhe'rabbet a by the nails b, which pass through the staves, and the upper ends of the plates O are slotted longitudinally, and one part, d, bent so as to loop over a wire or rod, D, which serves as an outer hoop for the staves, while the other parts, e, pass through the staves and are clinched or bent downward within the basket and serve to secure iirmly the upper ends of the plates C to the staves. (See Figs. l and 3.) Within the basket there is a hoop, E, which is formed of a wire or rod precisely the saine as hoop D, and the hoop E is rmly secured to the inner sides of the staves B by metal loops F, which pass through the same holes in the staves as the parts c of plates C. The hoops D E and plates C give great solidity and strength to the basket, rendering it eX- tremely durable. rlhe upper surfaces of the lower parts of the staves B are covered by metal plates f, which are secured to the bottom Aby nails or tacks g. rlhe tacks Z) also pass through these plates.

The staves B may be made of any suitable wood, and of any proper thickness, accord ing to the size of the basket.

The baskets may be of various sizes, and are well adapted for grain-baskets or for clothes or home baskets. Brass may be substituted for iron in the iiner kinds of baskets, and, if necessary, two or more pairs of hoops may be used for each basket.

The baskets are provided with handles, which may be attached in the usual or in any proper way.

Having thus described nx y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The employment or use of the plates C, applied to the outer sides ofthe staves lB, in connection with the rods or hoops D E, one or more pairs applied to the staves and secured thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
