(c1. 15-552 The present invention relates to casing units for holding and discharging a pressurized supply cartridge or an aerosol container and more particularly to such a casing having a coupling means for applicator heads or spreader means for topical application of formulated contents of the supply cartridge or aerosol container housed in the casing.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of casing whereby a new pressurized supply cartridge or the like is easily inserted and removed when empty and whereby the cartridge is dispensed by a pushbutton manually movable in a guide way along a side of the unit similar, for example, to a well-known selfcontained flashlight.
A more specific object is to provide a casing for pressurized cartridges formed of hollow longitudinal half reactions so-shaped and so-formed as close together around a pressurized cartridge and formed with means along the base of each section permitting securing of the sections together by an interchangeable applicator head formed with cooperating mating means and any suitable applicator or spreader surface for any intended purpose in cooperation with any specific formulation to be discharged from the cartridge.
Another object is to provide a hinged sectional casing with hollow half-sections, each of the half-section elements having an interior cylindrical chamber defined at an end by sections of an annular hand, which when brought together by closure of the casing form the actuator or valve tip abutment surface for the valve stem of the aerosol cartridge valve to provide valve actuation to discharge the cartridge contents to an applicator head coupled on the casing.
A further object is to provide a hinged sectional casing for pressurized cartridge dispensing of handy shape with a hand conforming handle and a finger movable pushbutton connected in a novel manner to the pressurized cartridge for the contents discharge operation thereof in coaction with a valve activator surface in the casing.
Another object is to provide a readily opened and closed hand unit casing for facilitating loading and unloading pressurized cartridges into the casing and for convenient manual discharge of the pressurized cartridge from the casing to any desired area.
Still another object is to provide a novel casing of the class described, whereby the same is very simple and economical to manufacture by any standard molding or sheet stamping process and whereby the same may be made of any economical material such as formulated plastic compositions and plastic sheets or of desired suitable light weight metal, fiber glass and the like.
With these and other objects in view, the present novel device consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein one embodiment of this invention is disclosed.

Referring in detail to the drawing there is shown in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 a hand unit 10 formed of half- sections 11 and 12. Each section is interiorly formed with angularly directed half cylinders 13 and 14 terminating with upper end walls 15 and 16, respectively. Thus when the sections are brought together the half cylinders 13 and 14 form one angularly extending body C with an internal cylindrical bore closed at the upper end by wall B. This cylinder opens laterally at thebottom into a relatively larger base A. The base A is similar to the upper portion of a boot and is formed along each longitudinal exterior edge with grooved flanges 18 and 19 to receive an applicator means 20, see FIGURES 1 and 3.
The half- sections 11 and 12 are held closed together by the applicator means 20 comprised of a sole plate with matching tongues 21 and 22 for said grooves of flanges 18 and 19. The applicator plate 20 is generally level and smooth on its coupling side and engages with a resiliently yieldable thrust lug or spring means 24, see FIGURE 4. This thrust lug will tend to compensate for a loose fit between the tongues of the applicator plate 20 and the melting grooves in the base A of the unit.
The hand unit when the sections are closed together provides an elongated slot 25 aligned at the hinge portion 26. This slot is defined by the edges 27 and 28 of two opposed cut-out areas of each half- sections 11 and 12, see FIGURE 2. The cut-out areas are sufficiently elongated, so as to provide a rectangular slot or opening 25 near the lower part of the top of the handle part C and a pushbutton 30 with oppositely positioned side guide grooves 31 and 32 are formed to receive the edges 27 and 28 of the sections 11 and 12, see FIGURE 7.
Depending and secured to the under surface of the button 30 inside the casing 10 is a pressurized container neck conforming rigid connector 34, see FIGURE 4. This connector is so-shaped and contoured as to interfit the grooves 35 at the neck and head portion 36 of a pressurized container 37 in the casing.
This container includes the usual standard pressurized container type valve with a hollow valve stem 38, such as is used for aerosol cartridges, see FIGURE 4 and valves such as illustrated by Patent 2,746,796, granted May 22, 1956, or in Patent 2,721,010. Also, if desired a valve, such as disclosed in Patent No. 2,788,784 issued April 16, 1957, may be used.
General operation When it is desired to use the present invention, the casing 10 when empty is swung open along the hinge 26 to expose the interior half sectional bores 13 and 14, see FIGURE 5, and a suitable size of pressurized container 37 is placed in the casing 10, as shown by FIG- URE 4, with the rim at the tip of the hollow valve stem 38 engaged against the activator surface 39, see FIG- and 19 and the casing is loaded forum as an ap plicator.
Now a surface to be treated is selected and the manually movable cartridge activator means 30 is finger pushed by the user to slightly move the container 37 forward toward the surface 30 to open the valve to discharge the contents through the bore of the hollow valve stem 38 and from the casing 10 to a suitable applicator, such as a brush, sponge or the like on the face of the applicator plate 20.
When the first cartridge 37 is used sufiiciently to exhaust its contents, the operation may be repeated by removing the plate 20, opening the casing 10, removing the old cartridge, and replacing it with a new full cartridge, until its contents are used up.
Without further description it is believed that the advantages of the present invention over the prior art is apparent and While only one embodiment of the same is illustrated, it is to be expressly understood that the same is not limited thereto as various changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of the parts illustrated, as will now likely appear to others and those skilled in the art. For a definition of the scope or limits of the invention, reference should be had to the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A self-contained pressurized cartridge dispensing hand unit comprising a casing with a handle and a head, said handle being a hollow shell, said head of the shell having a pressurized container type valve activator surface with a central bore, said central bore connecting to the head through a channel, spaced groove means on the head for connecting with suitably formed interchangeable treating units having at least one opening in alignment with the said channel, and a slidable button with a pressurized cartridge connecting means for moving the cartridge to activate the valve of the cartridge by said activator surface.
2. A casing comprised of duplicate half-sections, hinge means pivoting said sections together between open and closed positions, said shell being formed with a hollow handle portion, a discharge head portion at an end of the handle portion, a detachable surface engageable member with an opening attachable to said head portion and to hold said sections together, a channel in said head portion having an outlet end leading to said opening in the detachable member, said inlet end of the channel being defined by an annular valve activator surface, an aerosol cartridge with a movable hollow valve stem and connected discharge valve mounted in said handle with the rim of said hollow valve stem engaged on said surface, said cartridge being movable in the casing to open the discharge valve.
3. A casing comprised of duplicate half-sections, hinge means pivoting said sections together between open and closed positions, said shell being formed with a hollow handle portion, a discharge head portion at an end of the handle portion, a detachable surface engageable member with an opening attachable to said head portion and to hold said sections together, a channel in said head portion having an outlet end leading to said opening in the detachable member, said inlet end of the channel being defined by an annular valve activator surface, an aerosol cartridge with a movable hollow valve stem and connected discharge valve mounted in said handle with the rim of said hollow valve stem engaged on said surface, and a manual button means, said button having coupling means joined to the said cartridge to impart movement thereto toward said valve activator surface.
4. A hand unit pressurized cartridge dispenser comprising a body formed of half-sections, said sections being pivoted together to form said body, means in the body to house a pressurized cartridge, said cartridge having a standard type aerosol valve with a hollow valve stem, valve activator means with a central opening at the base of said first named means in engagement with said valve stem, and manual finger control means adapted to control the engagement of said valve stem with respect to said valve activator means.

Claims (1)
1. A SELF-CONTAINED PRESSURIZED CARTRIDGE DISPENSING HAND UNIT COMPRISING A CASING WITH A HANDLE AND A HEAD, SAID HANDLE BEING A HOLLOW SHELL, SAID HEAD OF THE SHELL HAVING A PRESSURIZED CONTAINER TYPE VALVE ACTIVATOR SURFACE WITH A CENTRAL BORE, SAID CENTRAL BORE CONNECTING TO THE HEAD THROUGH A CHANNEL, SPACED GROOVE MEANS ON THE HEAD FOR CONNECTING WITH SUITABLY FORMED INTERCHANGEABLE TREATING UNITS HAVING AT LEAST ONE OPENING IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE SAID CHANNEL, AND A SLIDABLE BUTTON WITH A PRESSURIZED CARTRIDGE CONNECTING MEANS FOR MOVING THE CARTRIDGE TO ACTIVATE THE VALVE OF THE CARTRIDGE BY SAID ACTIVATOR SURFACE.
