No. 438,847 4 Claims. (Cl. 30--87) The present invention relates to a new and novel safety razor and more particularly to a safety razor adapted to utilize double-edged injector blades.
Present day razors which utilize injector blades have the distinct disadvantage of being uneconomical in that the blade utilized therein is manufactured having only one cutting edge. This is due to the fact that the head portion of the razor must always be angularly inclined with respect to the handle portion of said razor.
It is therefore the primary object of the present inven tion to provide a safety razor which can be utilized with an injector blade having cutting edges on both longitudinal sides thereof.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a safety razor adapted to use double-edged injector blades, whereby the head portion thereof can be regulated so as to selectively place either one of said cutting edges in its operative shaving position.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a safety razor adapted to use double-edged injector blades, having a pivotable head portion whereby the blade inserted therein is always positioned at substantially a right angle with respect to the whiskers sought to be shaven.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a safety razor adapted to use double-edged injector blades, having means to quickly and easily pivot said head portion in order to place one of said edges of the blade in its operative position.
It is yet a further object of the present invention to provide a safety razor adapted to use double-edged injector blades, having means for regulating the protrusion of said cutting edges outwardly from said razor.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a safety razor adapted to use double-edged injector blades which may be produced simply, quickly and at a relatively low cost.
These and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, there is depicted in FIGURE 1 a safety razor 10 constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention. The razor includes a hollow tubular handle 12, a head 14, including a shank portion 16, a pivotal support member 18 for said head portion and a U-shaped strap 20 which serves to secure said head portion to said pivot support member, in a manner to be described in more detail hereinafter.
Disposed within the hollow portion 22 of said handle is a helical spring 24 and a substantially cylindrical locking member 26, which engages the pivotal support member 18 to lock said head in an angularly inclined position with respect to the longitudinal axis of said handle, as will be explained more fully hereinafter. The spring 24 abuts the bottom portion of said locking member and biases it in an upward direction. The handle also has a pair of diametrically opposed vertical slots 28 therein, while a collar 30 is slidably positioned upon said handle adjacent said slots by means of a bolt 32 which is riveted at both of its ends, and which passes through a pair of diametrically opposed holes 34 in said collar, a bore 36 in the locking member 26 and the slots 28 in handle 12 (as best seen in FIGURE 4).
The head 14 is formed of two halves which are connected together by means of the shank portion 16 which is of a generally U-shaped configuration with the bottom portion thereof pressed together, causing the top portion of the arms of the U to act as a spring to urge the halves of the razor head towards one another. Each half of the razor head includes a blade suport member 38, a top cover member 40, a longitudinal flange member 42 and a vertical underplate member 44, which is actually the uppermost position of the shank 16.
The head 14 is preferably made of a preformed piece of metal, such as stainless steel, wherein all of the members are formed integrally with one another.
The support members 38 and the cover members 40 are integrally connected to, and separated from, one another by means of the flanges 42 which form a longitudinal channel 46 between said members 38 and 46, and into 'which is inserted a double-edge injector blade 50 by means of the blade dispenser and injector 52, as will be described more fully hereinbelow.
The arms of the U-shaped shank portion 16 of the head 14 are bowed outwardly defining a recess 54 therebetween into which is inserted the rod member 56 of the blade dispenser 52, said rod member having a bowed portion 58 which is larger than the recess 54, whereupon said bowed portion urges the arms of the shank portion and thereby the halves of the razor head away from each other, thus effectively increasing the width of the channel 46 and permitting the blade 50 to be inserted therein while concomitantly therewith preventing the cutting edges 60 of said blade from contacting any part of the razor head, which contact would have the effect of dulling said cutting edges. When the rod member 56 is withdrawn from the recess 54 the halves of the razor are then urged towards one another, as discussed previously, with the cutting edges 60 prOtruding through longitudinal slots 62 formed in the top portion of the flanges 42; said flanges also having longitudinal slots 64 in the bottom portion thereof which permit the shaving debris accumulated within the heads to be disposed of readily and quickly, such as by washing.
The U-shaped strap is placed upon the shank portion 16 in co-extensive abutting relationship therewith, and the curved portions of said shank and said strap are forcefitted into a groove 66 in the top of the pivotal support member 18, thus causing the upper arms of said strap to act as a leaf spring to further urge the two halves of the razor head towards one another and insuring proper operation of the razor 10.
The pivotal support member 18 is pivotally connected to the top portion of the handle 12 by means of a bolt 68 which passes through an opening 70 in said member 18 and through a pair of diametrically opposed openings 72 in said handle; said bolt being riveted at both ends thereof. The lower portion of the pivotal support member 18 is disposed within the hollow of the handle 12 and is of a substantially wedge-shaped configuration having principal faces 74 and 76, respectively. Similarly, the upper portion of the locking member 26 is of wedge-shaped configuration having principal faces 78 and 80, respectively.
In the operation of the razor 10, it is desired to have the head locked in an angular inclined position with respect to the handle 12, thus placing one of the cutting edges 60 at the correct angle for shaving.
This is accomplished by sliding the collar 30 downwardly, thus causing the bolt 32 to move the locking memher 26 downwardly against the upward biasing force exerted thereon by the spring 24. The downward movement of said locking member causes the upper portion thereof to disengage the lower portion of the pivotal support member 18 (as seen in FIGURE 6), thus permitting said support member to pivot about the bolt 68, thereby permitting the razor head 14 to be moved from side to side to selectively position one of the cutting edges in shaving position. As seen in FIGURE 5, the razor head 14 is positioned to the right of the handle 12, being angularly inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof and having the right cutting edge 60 thereof in its shaving position. The head 14 is locked in position by the engagement of the face 78 of the wedgeshaped upper portion of the locking member 26, with the face 76 of the Wedge-shaped lower portion of the pivotal support member 18. When it is desired to position the left cutting edge 60 in its shaving position, the collar 30 is moved downwardly and the pivotal support member 18 is pivoted to the left, the collar is then released and the locking member 26 is moved upwardly by the action of the spring 24, causing the face 80 of the upper portion of said locking member to engage the face 74 of the lower portion of the pivotal support member 18, thereby locking the head 14 in a position which is to the left of the handle 12 and angularly inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof.
In view of the fact that it is desirable to regulate the protrusion of the cutting edges 60 of the blade 50 outwardly from said razor, one of the vertically disposed underplate members 44 is provided with an integrally formed horizontal flange member 82 (as best seen in FIGURES 7 and 9), while the other of said vertically disposed underplate members 44 is provided with a horizontal slot 84 (as best seen in FIGURE 2), which slot is in alignment with said flange member 82. Slidably mounted within the slot 84 is a rivet 86 which abuts said flange member. Slidable movement of the rivet 86 along the tapered flange 82 causes the halves of the razor head 14 to be urged towards or 4 away from one another, thereby varying the protrusion of the cutting edges 60 outwardly of said razor, and permitting regulation thereof in accordance with an individuals needs or desires.
A second embodiment of the present invention is shown by FIGURES 13 through 17, wherein similar parts are denoted by similar reference numerals. In this embodiment the handle 12, of the razor 10', has a substantially oval cross-section (as seen in FIGURE 17) and includes a lower portion 90 and an upper portion 92 which is angularly inc-lined with respect to said lower portion, said upper and lower portions being formed integrally with one another. The shank portion 16' of the head 14 has a U-shaped strap 20' placed thereupon, and the entire assembly is removably inserted into the hollow recess 94 of said upper portion 92. The head is then positioned to the left (as seen in FIGURE 13) and angularly inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the lower portion 90 of said handle, and the left cutting edge 60' of the blade 58' is in its shaving position. When the left cutting edge becomes dull the head 14 and strap 20 are then removed from the upper portion 92 and rotated 180 and then reinserted into the recess 94. Whereupon, the right cutting edge 60' is then placed in its shaving position.
The blade dispenser and injector 52 is formed from a single strip of metal which is folded back upon itself; the strip of metal includes flange portions which project outwardly therefrom, said flange portions being secured together to form the rod member 56 of said injector 52; the rod member 56 being centrally disposed with respect to said injector at the bottom thereof and having an enlarged spreader portion 58.
It is thus seen that I have provided a new and novel safety razor and an injector for injecting double-edged injector blades into the head of said razor, whereby either one of :the cutting edges of said blade may be easily, readily and selectively placed in its shaving position.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, there are many modifications which may be made therein by persons skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety razor for use with a double-edged injector blade, comprising a hollow handle portion and a head portion adapted to have said double-edged blade injected therein; first means pivotally connecting said head portion to said handle portion for selectively placing said head portion in an angularly inclined position with respect to the longitudinal axis of said handle portion, second means disposed within said hollow handle adapted to engage said first means to lock said head portion in said selected position, and concomitantly therewith selectively placing one of the cutting edges of said blade in its shaving position, said second named means comprising a substantially cylindrical member vertically movable between an upper and a lower position within said handle, a collar slidably mounted upon said handle and connected to said cylindrical member, and a spring member interposed between the bottom of said handle and the bottom of said cylindrical member to bias said cylindrical member and said collar upwardly, said cylindrical member being movable downwardly to its lower position by a corresponding downward movement of said collar, in which position said cylindrical member is disengaged from said first named means to permit of pivotal movement thereof to place said head portion in said selected angularly inclined position, and said cylindrical member being movable upwardly to its upper position by the biasing force exerted thereon by said spring member, in which position said cylindrical member engages said first named member, locking the same and said head portion in said selected position.
2. A safety razor in accordance with claim 1, wherein said first named means comprises a substantially cylindrical support member for said head portion, said support member being pivotally connected to said handle at the top thereof, said pivotal support member having a groove in the top thereof, said head portion including a U-shaped shank, and said shank being force-fitted into said groove, thereby pivotally connecting said head portion with respect to the longitudinal axis of said handle.
3. A safety razor in accordance with claim 2, wherein said head portion is formed of two halves which are joined together and urged towards one another by the upper arms of said U-shaped shank; a U-shaped strap positioned upon said shank and co-extensive therewith, the upper arms of said strap serving as a spring to further urge the halves of said razor head towards one another, and the curved portions of said shank and said strap being forcefitted into the groove in said pivotal support member.
4. A safety razor in accordance with claim 1, wherein said cylindrical member has a wedge-shaped upper portion defining two principal faces, and said pivotal support member has a wedge-shaped lower portion defining two principal faces, said cylindrical member engaging said pivotal support member to lock the latter in a first selected position by the engagement of one of the principal faces of said cylindrical member with one of the principal faces of said pivotal support member and in a second selected position by the engagement of the other of said principal races of said cylindrical and pivotal support members, said head portion additionally comprising a tapered flange and a rivet slideably engageable with said flange to adjust the protrusion of the cutting edges of said blade.

Claims (1)

1. A SAFETY RAZOR FOR USE WITH A DOUBLE-EDGED INJECTOR BLADE, COMPRISING A HOLLOW HANDLE PORTION AND A HEAD PORTION ADAPTED TO HAVE SAID DOUBLE-EDGED BLADE INJECTED THEREIN; FIRST MEANS PIVOTALLY CONNECTING SAID HEAD PORTION TO SAID HANDLE PORTION FOR SELECTIVELY PLACING SAID HEAD PORTION IN AN ANGULARLY INCLINED POSITION WITH RESPECT TO THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF SAID HANDLE PORTION, SECOND MEANS DISPOSED WITHIN SAID HOLLOW HANDLE ADAPTED TO ENGAGE SAID FIRST MEANS TO LOCK SAID HEAD PORTION IN SAID SELECTED POSITION, AND CONCOMITANTLY THEREWITH SELECTIVELY PLACING ONE OF THE CUTTING EDGES OF SAID BLADE IN ITS SHAVING POSITION, SAID SECOND NAMED MEANS COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY CYLINDRICAL MEMBER VERTICALLY MOVABLE BETWEEN AN UPPER AND A LOWER POSITION WITHIN SAID HANDLE, A COLLAR SLIDABLY MOUNTED UPON SAID HANDLE AND CONNECTED TO SAID CYLINDRICAL MEMBER, AND A SPRING MEMBER INTERPOSED BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF SAID HANDLE AND THE BOTTOM OF SAID CYLINDRICAL MEMBER TO BIAS SAID CYLINDRICAL MEMBER AND SAID COLLAR
