IMPROVEMENT IN MOUNTING GLAZIERS DIAMONDS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 33, ISS, dated September 3, 1861.
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DIOKINsoN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a certain new and improved article of manufacture which I have designated as Dickinsons Knife Key Blade Pocket Glaziers Diamond, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full description ofthe same.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching to one end of the instrumenta metal key or glass-breaker and at the other end the block in which the diamond is set in a like manner as knifeblades are inserted in the handle, so that the key and diamondbloek may be shut up, and thus adapt theinstrument. for carrying in the pocket in the same Way that the pocket-knife is carried. By this means I am enabled to make the glaziers diamond acceptable to a large class of persons who frequently desire the use of a glaziers diamond, when not residents ot' towns and cities, but have been deterred from the purchase of theinstrument on account of its inconvenient arrangement (as ordinarily made) and want of portability. As now const-ructed it may be carried in the pocket with perfect security, and at the same time without adding much to the inconvenience of its possessor; but to describe my invention more particularly l will refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, the same letters of reference wherever they occurreferring to like parts.
Figure l is a View of the instrument as developed for use. Fig, 2 is a View of the same exhibiting the key and diamond-block partly closed and showing the action of the spring in holding them open or shut. Fig. 3 is a View of the instrument, showing the key and diamond-block as shut up.
Letter A is the handle, having a spring Bin the back of it in the manner of a pocket-knife handle.
In the ends of the handle are :secured by means of rivets c the key or glass-breaker D and block E, in which the diamond F is secured.
It will bc obvious that the adjustment of the key and block in the ends of the handle may be varied by making them to slide in and out of the handle and sustained by a spring acting against them to hold them somewhatlikeV the spring in the back of the handle; but as such modification does not vary the principle aimed at by my invention-that is, making a knife key-blade pocket glaziers diamond, and thus making a new article of manufacture-l deem all such modioations included in the special design of my invention.
Having now described my invention and its operation and construction, I will proceed to set forth what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The making of glaziers diamonds in the form of a pocket-knife, substantially as described, as a new article of manufacture.
