Description

G. ROSEN July 4, 1967 HANGER Filed May 18, 1965 limited .dtates Patent @ffice 3,329,386 Patented July 4, 1967 3,329,386 HANGER Gerald Rosen, Englewood Cliffs, NJ., assignor to Kayser- Roth Corporation, New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed May 18, 1965, Ser. No. 456,761 3 Claims. (Cl. 24S- 340) This invention relates to a hanger device for supporting garments especially hosiery. More particularly, this invention relates to a hanger device for supporting hosiery which both allows the hosiery to he displayed attractively and is adapted to prominently display advertising promotional and merchandising matter.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and novel supporting device for attractively supporting and displaying various garments, particularly hosiery.
A further object of this invention is to provide a new and novel garment supporting device which is adapted to prominently display advertising, merchandising and promotional matter while supporting hosiery.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a display containing hosiery and a hanger support thereof which will allow the cust-omer access to the hosiery as well as provide advertising promotional and merchandising information for the customer.
It is a further object of this invention to lprovide a relatively stiif flat sheet which can be adapted to form a hanger device for attractively supporting and displaying hosiery.
Y In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a hanger device for supporting garments, particularly hosiery, comprising a front panel adapted to receive printed matter having an upwardly extending hanger portion for releasable attachment to a companion support, and a rear panel composed of two releasably interlocked flaps extending from the opposite side edges of the front panel. The upper edge of rear panel formed by the interlocking flaps is adapted to support hosiery so that the hosiery surrounds and depends from the rear panel. Furthermore in preparing a display in accordance with this invention, the hosiery depends from the rear panel so that a portion of the hosiery is below the front panel and thereby exposed to the eye of a customer. By means of this novel iconstruction, a unitary garment supporting device is provided that will both display the garment as well as printed matter such as advertising, promotional and/or merchandising material in an attractive manner. Furthermore this novel construction makes it possible to hide the exact support on which the garment rests from the eye of the customer. Hen-ce only the garment and the advertising, promotional and merchandising matter need be displayed to the customer. Additionally vthe garment supporting device provides an economical and attractive means for displaying individual garments to a customer whereby the customer can feel and otherwise examine the individual garments. Therefore the article of this invention provides an attractive means for hanging and displaying garments or wearing apparel such as stockings, ties, trousers, skirts, etc.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the improved garment supporting device in accordance with this invention, showing a garment such as a stock supported by the device of this invention;
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevation view of the garment supporting device, with the stocking shown in phantom.
FIGURE 3 is a horizontal cross-sectional view of the garment supporting device of this invention, along the lines 3-3 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a vertical .cross-sectional view of the garment supporting device along the line 4-4 of FIG- URE 1;
FIGURE 5 is a front elevational View of the garment supporting device of this invention showing the garment supporting device in an open position With the garment removed.
Upon reference to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that it shows a garment supporting device 10 comprising a front panel 12, a rear panel 14 comprising two releasablyinterlocking flaps or arms 16 and 18 forming an upper edge 20 upon which garment A is supported. Extending upwardly from panel 12 is a hook portion 22 which is adapted to engage a line or rod B upon which the garment supporting device 10 may be suspended. The i garment supporting device is formed from a single relatively stiff material such as coated paper, cardboard, a thermoplastic resin, etc. with the individual members being shaped by means of a pattern or by molding.
In FIGURES 1 and 2, the garment supporting device 10 supporting hosiery A is shown. The garment supporting device 10 includes a flat front panel 12 and a rear panel 14. The front panel 12 is shown for the purposes of illustration and without limiting intent as being quadrilateral in configuration, so as to include a lower edge 24, an upper edge 26 and two side edges 28 and 30 perpendicularlydisposed with respect to the upper edge 26, as well as front and rear faces 12a and 12b. As shown in this embodiment, side edge 28 is longer than side edge 30. Therefore lower edge v24 which connects the lower extremities of edges 28 and 30 is sloped downward with respect to side 30. The front face 12a of front panel 12 is adapted to be printed with any conventional advertising, merchandising and/or promotional matter. Directly attached to the body of portion 12, is a hook 22 by which the device 10 containing the hosiery A can be suspended.
The rear panel 14 contains a pair of releasably interlocking arms 16 and 18 which are hingedly connected at the lower extremities of opposite side edges 30` and 28 respectively by means of connecting panels 32 and 34.
Connecting panel 32 connects arm 16 to front panel 12 and connecting panel 34 connects arm 18 to front panel l2. As seen in FIGURE 2, the releasably interlocking arms 16 and 18 which form the rear panel 14 define an upper edge 20 and a lower edge 26" which are vertically aligned and parallelly disposed with respect to each other. Upper edge 20 supports hosiery A so that hosiery A surrounds upper edge 201 and is suspended therefrom. The rear panel 14 and the front panel 12 define a space 40 (FIGURE 3) through which a portion of the hosiery A extends. As seen in FIGURE 1, hosiery A extends through space 40 below the bottom edge 24 of front panel 12. In this manner both the printed matter on front panel 12a and the garment A can be seen and inspected by the customer at one time.
As shown in FIGURE 5, the hanger 10` of this invention can he .produced from a single sheet of relatively stiff material. The sheet 15 consists of the front panel 12 having a hook portion extending upwardly therefrom, two connecting panels and the releasably interlocking arms 16 and 18 which form the rear panel 14 when they are interlocked. Arm 16 includes a top edge 44 and bottom edge 44', both being sloped in a downward direction i and side edges 45 and 45. Extending from top edge 44 J of connecting panel 32. Connecting panel 32 has two side edges 47 and 48. Side 47 is connected in end-to-end relation with side 45" of arm 16 and side 48 is connected in end-to-end relation with side edge 38 of front panel 12. As shown in FIGURE 5, arm 16 swings downwardly and backwardly about edges 47 and 48.
Arm 18 lwhich extends from side 28 of body portion 12 includes a top edge 54 and a bottom edge 54 which are both sloped in an upward direction as well as side edges 56 and 56. Extending upwardly from bottom wall 54 at side S6 of arm 18 is a slit 60 which is adapted to engage slit 5S of arm 16. Arm 18 is hingedly connected at edge 56 to side edge 28 of front panel 12 by means of connecting panel 34 below the horizontal projection of side edges 47 and 48 of connecting panel 32 on opposite side edge 28. Connecting panel 34 has two side edges 57 and 58. Side -57 being connected in endto-end alignment with side 56" of arm 18 and side 58 being connected in end-to-end alignment with side edge 28 of front panel 12. As shown in FIGURE 5, edges 58 and 57 provide a double hinged connection allowing arm 18 to swing upwardly and backwardly about edges 57 and 58.
By means of the double hinged connection of arm 16 to side edge 30 yand arm 18 to opposite side edge 28 described above, arm 16-is free to swing in upwardly and backwardly about side edge 30 and arm 18 is free to swing downwardly and backwardly about side edge 28. Furthermore arm 16 is joined to side edge 30 below the horizontal projection on side 30y of the edges 48 and 47 of connecting panel 32. In this manner, when arm 16 is swung downwardly and backwardly about side 30 and arm 18 is swung upwardly and backwardly about side 28, arm 16 is permitted to mutually engage arrn 18 adjacent back portion 12b. As seen in FIGURE 2, arm 16 and arm 18 can be releasably interlocked in a mutual engagement by means of interlocking slits 55 and 60. When arms 16 and 18 are releasably interlocked to form panel 14, the upper edges 44 and 54 of arms 16 and 18 respectively are aligned to form upper edge of rear panel 14 and the lower edges 44 and 54 of arms 16 and 18 respectively are aligned to form lower edge 20" of panel 14. As seen in FIGURE 2, upper edge 20 and lower edge 20 slope downwardly from edge 30 of front panel 12. This downward sloping coniguration of upper edge 20 upon which hosiery A depends conforms to the contours of the hosiery allowing the hosiery to hang straight through space 40. Hence when the garment supporting device containing hosiery A is hung from a rod B and displayed to the customer, the garment A is supported on edge 20 so that it hangs in a parallel direction to the front face 12a of front panel 12. In this manner the hosiery can be easily supported and attractively displayed to the customers.
Therefore, this new and novel construction of a garment supporting device of this invention makes it possible for the garment as hosiery, to be attractively displayed. This is true since this novel construction provides a means whereby it is possible to only display the hosiery and the printed portion of the garment supporting device without displaying the means whereby the hosiery is supported in said device. Hence by the means of this invention garments such as hosiery may be attractively displayed for merchandising purposes. Furthermore the construction of the resulting display structure is extremely simple and economical, so as to easily provide an attractive device for displaying and advertising garments such as hosiery to prospective customers.
While I have disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have indicated various possible changes, omissions and additions, which may be made therein, it will be apparent that various other changes, omissions and additions may be made in the invention without departing from the scope and spirit thereof.
