CONTAINER AND LID ASSEMBLY Filed July 6, 1965 INVEN'IOR. HARRY 19/4/054 5,9.
ATTORNf) United States Patent Office 3,347,408 CONTAINER ND LID ASSEMBLY Harry Baker, Sr., Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, assignor to American Can Company, New York, N.Y., a corporation of New Jersey Filed July 6, 1965, Ser. No. 469,705 5 Claims. (Cl. 220-60) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A container having at one end an inwardly extending annular radial flange which provides at its inner portion an upwardly facing channel, the inner wall of which constitutes an upwardly extending yieldable friction wall free at its upper end, has a lid with a wall adapted to snugly engage the friction wall and an annular outwardly extending bead which is near the bottom wall of the lid to force the friction wall outwardly slightly as the lid is inserted into the container and to snap under the bottom of the friction wall to hold the lid on the can when the lid is freely inserted.
This invention relates to and in particular to therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide a container having a lid which effectively seals the contents of the container and which can easily be removed.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a partly broken away elevation of a container and lid assembly; and
FIG. 2 is an enlarged sectional view takenalong the line 2-2 in FIG. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a container according to the invention is generally indicated at and it includes a bottom portion 11 and a cylindrical body portion 12 having an inwardly extending annular radial flange 13. The inner end of the flange 13 curves downwardly and then upwardly to provide an annular upwardly facing channel 14 and the flange 13 terminates in an annular curled lip 15 which partially closes the channel 14. The lip 15 is curled to provide strength and the raw edge 16 thereof is protected by the channel 14 to prevent contamination of the contents of the container by rust and corrosion products from the raw edge. The innermost wall 17 (hereinafter called the friction wall) of the channel 14 provides a smooth yieldable friction wall for engagement with a lid generally indicated at 18. The flange 13 can be stepped as at 19 for rigidity. The lid 18 includes a bottom wall 20 and a cylindrical side wall 21 which is dimensioned for snug engagement with the frica container and lid assembly an improved paint can ad a lid tion wall 17 of the flange 13. The side wall 21 has an annular outwardly extending bead 22 near the bottom wall 20 of the lid and the bead 22 projects outwardly beyond the friction wall 17 when the lid is in place in the container. As the lid is inserted into the container the bead 22 causes the friction wall 17 to yield outwardly slightly, and when the bead 22 is pushed below the lower end of the friction Wall the lid snaps in place.
3,347,408 Patentedl Oct. 17, 1967 The bead 22 constitutes a releasable lock for preventing accidental removal of the lid due to rough handling, for example, and if pressure develops within the container, the bead 22 tends to prevent seepage because it then seats against the lower end of the friction wall 17 Near the upper end of the side wall 21 is an outwardly extending shoulder 23 which engages the curled lip 15 of the container to limit the travel of the lid into the container. The shoulder 23 is curved to snugly engage the lip 15.
The upper end of the side wall 21 is provided with a curled lip 24 which is spaced above the lip 15 of the container to facilitate insertion of a suitable tool under the lip 24 to pry the lid out of the container.
The surface of the side wall 21 below the bead 22 is tapered inwardly to facilitate insertion of the lid into the container and the surface of the bottom wall 20 of the lid can he stepped as at 25 and 26 for rigidity.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction, and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container and lid assembly, the container comprising a bottom portion, a body portion and an inwardly extending annular radial flange at the upper end of the body portion, the inner end of the flange providing an annular upwardly facing channel, the innermost wall of said channel constituting a smooth yieldable friction wall extending upwardly from the bottom of said channel and having upper and lower ends, the upper end being free of securement to any other portion of said flange, the lid comprising a bottom wall and a side wall adapted to snugly engage the friction wall, the side wall having an annular outwardly extending bead which is near the bottom wall of the lid and which causes the friction wall to yield outwardly slightly as the lid is inserted into the container so that the lid snaps in place and is locked against accidental removal after the bead is pushed below the lower end of the friction wall, and the side wall having an annular outwardly extending shoulder for engagement with the upper end of the friction wall to limit the travel of the lid into the container.
2. A container and lid assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the side wall has an outwardly extending lip which is spaced slightly above the upper edge of the friction wall to facilitate removal of the lid.
3. A container and lid assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the upper end of the friction wall provides a curled lip that partially closes the upwardly facing channel.
4. A lid as claimed in claim 1 wherein the side wall of the lid is tapered between the bead and the bottom wall to facilitate insertion of the lid into the container.
5. A container adapted to be closed by a lid having a bottom wall and a cylindrical side wall extending upwardly from said bottom wall, an outwardly extending shoulder merging with the upper end of said cylindrical wall, a curled lip above and merging with said shoulder, an annular outwardly extending bead near the bottom of said cylindrical wall, said container comprising an annular flange extending inwardly from the top of said container, an annular upwardly facing channel at the inner portion of said flange, the inner Wall of said channel constituting an upwardly extending friction wall free from securement at its upper end and terminating in an annular curled lip, the edge of which is disposed Within said channel, said cylindrical friction wall being adapted to snugly engage said cylindrical side wall between said head and said shoulder when said lid is inserted into said container.
