No. 335,704. Patented Febf 9, 1886";v
wwf/@MM l Y STATES PATENT' OYRUS IIOULT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ANDREV H. PARKER, OF SAME PLACE.
eLAsTlc HOSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,704, dated February 9, 188. Application filed September 15, 1885. Serial No. 177,112. (I\"o model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GYRUS HOULT, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have :invented a new andv useful Improvement in Elastic Hose, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a completed hose on a foot. Fig?. representsa completed web ready to be folded and sewed together to form the stocking. Fig. 3 represents the piece 'which may be iirst formed. Fig. 4 represents the commencement ol' the second piece. Fig. 5 represents the two pieces shown in Figs. 3 and 4 brought together. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 illustrate the manner in which the completed web shown in Fig. 2 may be folded and the edges secured together to form a completed stocking, which is shown in Fig. 9, except the bind- Ilastic stockings are worn by those who have varicose veins.
The principal object of my invention is to make such stockings so that the principal seam at the ankle will be upon the side of the ankle and away from the large tendon at the back part of the heel.
In the drawings, A represents a knitted web from which my stocking can be made.
In knitting this web I first knit a piece, a, like that shown in Fig. 3, and finish oft the upper edge from the point b to c, leaving the stitches upon the needle from the point c to d. I then commence knitting another piece, c, (shown in Fig. 4,) and such piece may be about an inch and a quarter in length, and I then place the stitches from c to d of the part a upon the same needle with e, as shown in Fig. 5, and then proceed with the knitting until a web of sufficient length is completed, as shown in Fig. 2. I then bring the part a into a position similar to that shown in Fig. 6, and unite by stitching the inner edge, f, of the part e with a portion of c, being the portion between c and g of Fig. 3. I then fold the web over somewhat, as shown in Fig. 7, and then bring the two edges on n of the main part of the web together, as shown in Fig. 8, and unite these two edges, except about an inch or an inch and a quarter at the lower end of the part e, and also unite the edge h of the part a with the lower end, r, of the curved edge of the web, and also unite the edget oi' the part e with the upper edge ofthe free end of a, the portion of the upper edge of awhich is united to the edge t' being that which is between Z and 7c of Fig. 3. The stocking will then be as shown in Fig. 9, and will be completed, excepting that binding may be stitched over the seams, as shown in Fig.1.
This elastic stocking when on the foot and leg fits nicely, and it has no seams which can injure or unpleasantlyaffect the large tendon at the back of the heel and ankle, which is a very desirable feature.
This stocking has but few seams, and they are -so located as to be least likely to affect the wearer un pleasantly. It will be observed from the description that there is one seam along that part which goes over the foot, which is shown in Figs. 1 and 9.
It has been the practice to enlarge on both sides the web which 'forms the leg. This brings the main seam at the back of the leg and ankle. I enlarge the web on one side and make the other straight, except that in special cases the upper end may be slightly enlarged on the edge n, as indicated by dotted line t in Fig. 2. This construction brings the lower part of the main seam on the inside of the ankle and the upper part at the back of the leg.
What I claim as new*` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ils- Theimproved elastic hose herein described, composed of a leg-piece having one edge curved and the other edge substantially straight, and also having an extension, e, in combination with a foot-piece, a, the parts being united substantially as and for the purposes speci- CYRUS HOULT.
