Corn Sheller. v
. No. 33,648; Patented Nov. 5, 1861. V
Witw e sses: Inventor: Maw @m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM H. JONES, OF FALLSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,648, dated November 5, 1861.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM H. JONES, of Fallsington, Bucks county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oorn-Shellers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of corn-shellers in which the cob of corn is pressed bya spring against the face of a plate-wheel having projections and against the peripheryof a stripper-wheel, the plate-Wheel turning the cob around, while the stripper-wheel tears off the kernels; and my improvement consists in a weighted arm arranged in respect to the plate and stripper wheels in the manner described hereinafter, so that the kernels may be as effectively stripped from the point as from the body of the cob.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification,
' Figure l is a vertical section of my improved corn-sheller, and Fig. 2 a ground plan.
The frame of the machine consists of a box with the straight sides A and A',the inclined front B, and inclined rear 0. In the opposite sides A and A of the frame turns the spindle D, which is provided on the outside of the frame with a cog-wheel E and a suitable handle F and between the opposite frames A and A with a plate-wheel G and eccentric H, the face of the plate-wheel being provided, as usual in corn-shellers of this class, with a number of projections, as seen in Big. 1.
The cog-wheel E gears into a pinion I on the shaft J, which turns in the opposite sides A and A of the frame, and to which is secured the stripper-wheel K, the latter, as usual, having an inclined periphery provided with teeth.
To the top of the frame is hung the arm L, from which projects the rod M, the latter being provided with any suitable number of eyes, to one or other of which is hung a weight N.
Q is an inclined platform hung at one end to the rear of the frame and connected at the opposite end to the rod P, the upper end of which embraces the eccentric H on the shaft D.
The cobs of corn are deposited in the hop-- per R, which is of such a form and size that one cob only at a time can pass from and be directed by the hopper to the proper position for being acted upon by the plate-wheel G, stripper-Wheel K, and the arm L.
In ordinary corn-shellers of this class the cob of corn is pressed against the face of the Wheel G and the periphery of the stripperwheel K by means of a bar acted upon by a spring. As all cobs of corn are of a tapering form, it is evident that when the point is being acted upon by the stripper-wheel the spring must be less rigid and consequently have less pressure than when the stripperwheel is acting on the body of the cob, and consequently the kernels of corn will be more effectively torn away from some parts of the cob than from others. By using the weighted arm L, however, for forcing the cob against the stripper-Wheel and plate-wheel, the pressure on the cob will be the same throughout, and consequently the kernels will be as effectually stripped from the point as from the body of the cob. Both the kernels and the stripped cobs drop onto the inclined platform Q, which is agitated by the eccentric H, the kernels passing through the holes y to the ground or into any suitable receptacle beneath the platform, and the stripped cobs passing down the platform and falling therefrom to the ground at the rear of the machine.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The weighted arm L, arranged in respect to the plate-wheel G and stripper-wheel K as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABRAM H. JONES. Witnesses:
CHARLES E. FOSTER, JOHN WHITE.
