BERNARD M. OBOYLAN, OF CORNING, OHIO.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFZECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,099, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed August 10, 1885.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BERNARD M. OBOYLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candle Holders and Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved candleholder and guard-plate for detachable connection to soeketed candlesticks, by which means are provided for supporting candles of various diameters, and also for catching the drip.
The invention consists of a concaved metal dish or guard-plate having a pair of elastic concaved ngers attached centrally to its upper surface, and a pair of spring-catches secured to its under side, said fingers and catches being held securely in place by means of a nut and aspur-pointed screw, the latter serving also as a point of attachment for the candle and to prevent any liability of displacement.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a view of my improved candle-holder and guard-plate. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same attached to a Candlestick.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a slightly-concaved metal disk or dish, which serves as a guard-plate or dripcup for catching drip from the candle as it is consumed. To the upper surface of this guardplate is attached 4a pair of concaved elastic iingers, 2, which consist of a metallic strip of proper width, having its opposite ends bent up at right angles to the central portion, 3, of said strip. rlhe upward-bent ends that constitute the elastic iingers 2 are concaved longitudinally, as shown, to conform to the cylindrical shape of the candle, and, being formed of spring metal, are sufficiently elastic to grasp candles of various diameters. The elastic iingers 2 are secured to the guard-plate l by a screw-bolt, 4, passed through the central portion, 3, of the metallic. strip from which said fingers are formed. This screw-bolt also serves to secure to the under side of the guard-plate a pair of spring-catches, which are made iu a manner similar to the elastic ingers 2-that is, from a strip of spring metal, with ends turned at a right angle to the central portion of the strip and concaved. The metallic Serial No. 174,019. (No model.)
strip from which the spring-catches are formed may, however, be of less width and length than that from which the elastic iingers are made. It will be observed that the elastic fingers 2 are braced by the connecting portion 3 of the strip from which they are formed, said connecting portion serving as a base from which the elasticity of the ngers is exerted. This is also true of the spring-catches 5 and their connecting-base 6. The connecting screwbolt 4 is passed up through the center of the guard-plate l. and through the respective bases 3 and 6 of the elastic fingers 2 and springcatches 5, and is secured by a nut, 7, on the upper side ofthe guard-plate. It will be observed that the screw 4 projects somewhat above the connecting-base of the elastic fingers, and, be-
ing provided with a sharpened end or spur,
serves as a point of attachment for the lower end of the candle, which can be pressed down thereon, thus obviating any liability of accidental displacement.
The spring-catches 5 are made of any required length or conformation to fit candlestick-sockets of various sizes.
When the device is in position upon a candlestick, a candle of any ordinary thickness can be readilyinserted within the elastic lingers 2, and upon the upward-projecting ends of the screw 4, and as it is consumed, or when reduced greatly in length, the candle' can be raised within the elastic fingers until held by their upper ends only. By this means, therefore, a candle can be readily consumed to its end, while the guard-plate protects the candlestick or any object on which it may be placed from drip and grease.
It will he observed that when a tall candle is inserted in the holder it can be pressed down until its lower end is pierced by the sharp-pointed screw-bolt 4, which thus serves to steady the candle and prevent toppling. After the candle has been partly consumed the shortened end can be detached from the screw-point 4 and be adjusted vertically to any required height, or until it is held by the elastic fingers 2 alone.
Vvhat I claimasmy invention isl. The combination, in a candle-holder, of loo surface of said guard-plate, springcatches, base, 3, the sprngcatches 5, also having an also bent from a single metallic strip, with a integral base, 6, the spur-pointed screw-1301134, connecting-base by which they are attached and the nut 7, substantially as described.
