Straw, Grass Lake, Mich., assignor to Walker Manufacturing Company, Racine, Wis., a corporation of Delaware Filed June 27, 1966, Ser. No. 560,685 4 Claims. (Cl. 181-72) This invention relates to exhaust systems for automotive type vehicles and concerns a muffler having the portion thereof which is exposed to view attractively ornamented.
It is an object of the invention to provide an attractive appearance to the outlet end of a rnufiler so that a separate tailpipe spout for that purpose is unnecessary.
In preferred form, the invention accomplishes this and other objects by means of a mufller construction that utilizes the housing and outlet gas tube as a means to firmly and permanently support a chrome plated sleeve at the extreme end of an exhaust system.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a longitudinal cross section through an exemplary muflier embodying the invention; and
FIGURE 2 is a cross section along the line 22 of FIGURE 1.
The mufller 1 has a straight through gas passage tube 3 and an outer housing or shell 5 that is necked down at the inlet end 7 and spotwelded to an annular embossment 9 formed in the tube 3 and at the outlet end 11 to be spotwelded to a second annular embossment 13 in the tube.
The tube 3 is imperforate except for an area 15 of louvers formed near the inlet end. This area is surrounded by a shell 17 which is pinched down at one end in a substantially gas tight joint 19 with the tube, the other end of shell being open at 21 and having a band 22 sheared out and Welded to the tube 3 for support. It is apparent that the shell 17 and louvers 15 constitute a modified spit high frequency attenuating chamber and that the shell constitutes .a tuning tube to act in conjunction with volume 23 to attenuate predetermined low or medium frequency sound in the gas flowing through the tube 3.
The tube 3 extends a substantial distance beyond the end of the housing 5 as seen by the section 25, the latter terminating in a diagonally disposed outlet edge 27. The shell 5 also has a short section 29 that extends a short distance beyond the embossment 13 which forms the actual end of the interior, operative part of the mother.
An annular bracket 31 is spotwelded to the tube section 25 a short distance inwardly of the outlet edge 27 and has an enlarged annular flange 33 that is in coaxial alignment with the housing section 29. Supported on and spotwelded to the section 29 and flange 33 is a chrome plated trim sleeve 35 that terminates in a diagonal edge 37 that terminates in radial alignment with the tube edge 27 as seen in FIGURE 1.
It is the ornamental sleeve 35 that will be seen at the rear of the automobile utilizing the mufller 1 and it will be appreciated that it is more sturdily mounted and as attractive in appearance as the tailpipe spouts conventionally use-d for this purpose.
Modifications may be made in the structure illustrated without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A combined mufi'ier and tail spout comprising a housing having gas silencing structure and an outlet pipe for gas, said outlet pipe extending a substantial distance beyond the end of the m-ufller and having a support bracket secure-d thereto, and a tailpipe spout secured at one end on said housing and surrounding said outlet pipe and at another portion on said bracket.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said housing has an annular portion extending beyond the outlet portion thereof and said spout fitting on said portion.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 wherein said bracket is annular and has an annular flange of the same diameter as said annular housing portion and concentric therewith.
4. A device as set forth in claim 3 wherein said outlet pipe and said spout terminate in diagonal edges corresponding points of which lie in substantially the same transverse planes.
