CONTAINER PROVIDED WITH A LID IN VEN TOR United States Patent O 3,391,850 CONTAINER PROVIDED WITH A LID Lars Bertil Torgerson and Walter Sven Erwin Hentschel, Goteborg, Sweden, assignors to Aktiebolaget Fensom, Goteborg, Sweden, a corporation of Sweden Filed Mar. 6, 1967, Ser. No. 620,918 3 Claims. (Cl. 229-43) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to cylindrical containers provided with lids shaped in such a way as to render possible a piling of the containers with lids one on the top of the other or such a piling of the lids only. The invention not only ensures a true Vertical alignment of the piled containers and/or lids but also gives the piles stability.
The present invention has reference to cylindrical containers provided with lids and of the kind having a border flange projecting below the bottom of the container. The main feature of the invention is to be seen therein that the inner diameter of said ange is essentially equal to the outer diameter of the flange of the lid catching over the container opening respectively the outer diameter of the container at this opening and thereby that the lid is, at its upper portion, provided with a cylindrical portion having an `outer diameter which is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of said iiange at the container bottom. This shaping of the lid renders possible a piling of containers provided with lids in such a way that they will be situated one on the top of the other such that they will be situated verically exactly aligned and further they will require a small space. It is further rendered possible to pile loose lids one upon the other with reduced space requirements.
In the following the invention will be elucidated with reference to the accompanying drawing. In the drawing:
FIG. l is a partly longitudinally sectioned side elevation of a number of containers piled one on the top of the other,
FIG. 2 is a similar side elevation with a number yof lids piled one on the top of the other,
FIG. 3 is a plan view of one of the lids.
The invention has been illustrated when carried into etect at containers having a neck but it could of course be carried into elect also at containers having no such neck.
The containers are supposed to be manufactured from coated or waxed pasteboard and their bottom 2, which comprises a pasteboard disc having a downwards eX- tending ange 3, is inserted from the lower end of the container mantle and ixed to the same by means of gluing. Over the neck 4 of the container can be put a lid 5 with a downwards directed annular ange 6. The lid is at its upper portion provided with a ycylindrical portion 7 with an outer diameter 8 which only slightly decreases the inner diameter 9 -of the bottom ange 3 and also only slightly decreases the inner diameter 10 of the lid llange 6. Radially outside the cylindrical portion 7 the lid 5 is shaped with a peripheral -groove 11 for engagement wit-l1 the bottom ange 3 or the lower border of the cylinder mantle 12 or the lower border of the lid flange 6.
The groove 11 in the lid renders possible in the way shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 an easy and compact piling of containers 1 provided with lids 5 or only of the lids..
The lid shaped in accordance with the present invention gives not only the above enumerated advantages but the shape of the lid facilitates considerably the feeding of the lids to the machine for lling and closing the containers by requiring less complicated details lfor guiding the lids as this could be obtained with devices in contact with the inclining surface at the outer circumference of the lid shaped in accordance with the present invention.
The invention has been described in the aforegoing for purposes of illustration only and is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as delined in the appended claims and the shape of the container 1 as well as `of the lid 5 may be modied in many ways within the scope of the appended claims. For the reason that the cylindrical lid portion 7 provides a suicient guidance for the container bottom border, the peripheral outer groove wall 13 of the lid 5 may be completely dispensed with if desired. When the lid is manufactured from synthetic resin, there is in such a case obtained a certain material gain. However, when the lid is provided with such a groove wall 13, it may, as obvious from FIG. 1 a-t the top, with advantage be externally uted as at 14 or the like so as to facilitate the removal of the lid 5 from the container 1.
In the embodiment described in the aforegoing, the lid is supposed to be manufactured from synthetic resin or pasteboard. However, the lid may also be manufactured from a ring of synthetic resin with the opening in the centre of the lid ring lled with a disc of pasteboard attached to the n'ng e.g. by means of gluing. 'Ihe manufactoring costs are then somewhat reduced and the -application of a print (gures or hints for use) on the lid is facilitated. Only the pasteboard disc is then provided wh the print and a lot of variation possibilties are obtainae.
What we claim is:
1. Improvement in a cylindrical container provided with a lid having a ange and having a border llange projecting below the container bottom, wherein the improvement comprises said border ange having an inner diameter substantially equal to the inner dia-meter of said lid ange catching over the container opening, said lid at its upper portion having a cylindrical portion having an outer diameter slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the cylinder bottom border liange.
,2. Improvement in a cylindrical container as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lid has radially outside the cylindrical top portion a peripheral upwardly opening groove to be engaged by the lower border of a container arranged on top of said first container or the lower border flange of a lid arranged on top of said first mentioned lid.
3. Improvement in cylindrical containers as set forth in claim 1 wherein said lid -has a conical circumferential surface.
