No. 339,526. Patented Apr. 6, 1886.

ITED Srn'rns A'IENT BULL-RINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,526, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed June 27, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE Burrnn- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bull-Ringers; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, whieh form a part of this specification.
Like letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. My invention relates to a means of punching a hole through the cartilage of the nose of abull or other animal for inserting therein a ring.
The invention consists in the novel construction of a punching-inst-rument, hereinafter descr1bed, and in certain details connected therewith by means of which the operator is enabled to punch the hole and insert the ring, and to securely hold the animal during the operatron.
reat personal danger and frequently loss of life have been incurred by the use of the various cattle ringers heretofore constructed. No means having been provided for securely holding the animal until after the hole had been punched and the ring secured in place, it has been necessary to tie or otherwise fasten the animal before performing the operation.
The drawing represents a perspective view of the instrument embodying my improvements.
A represents what may be termed a fixed jaw, and is similar in all respects to the cor responding jaw in an ordinary punching-tool. At the point where the cutting'punch engages with it is a suitable face, d, which maybe furnished with a cushion of leather or other material adapted to the purpose.
The movable jaw Ois pivoted to the jaw A, and is in all respects like the movable or cutting jaw in punching-tools. The cuttingpunch a, which is carried upon the tip of the movable jaw, consists of a sharp-edged tube screwed or otherwise secured into place. The part 0 is extended into a handle correspond ing with the handle of the fixed jaw A.
Serial No. 169,998. (No model.)
Secured to the side of the fixed jaw A by means of the pivot b is a third arm or jaw, 13, this arm being provided with a handle parallel to and corresponding in length and general form to the handle of the fixed jaw A. The tip 0 of the arm B is formed with an open sided ring,c,through which the cutting-punch a, carried upon the tip of the movable part 0, passes.
In using the instrument the handle of the part 0 is lowered so as to throw the tip ofthe jaw, which carries the cutting-p11 nch, back out of the way. The tips of the jaws c (l are applied to the nose, and the handles A B are grasped firmly by the operator. The hole is then punched by an upward movement of the handle 0. Immediately after punching the hole the handle 0 is lowered, and the operator (while still maintaining a firm hold upon the handles A and B, and thus securely hold ing the animal) inserts the ring, the same passing through the open-sided ring 0 and the recently-punched hole in the nose. After the ring has been secured in place, the handles A B are separated and theinstrument is removed from the nose by a slight movement to one side.
Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bull-ringer, the combination, with two pivoted clamping-jaws to hold the nose of an animal, one of the jaws having an open side ring, of a third jaw pivoted thereto and carrying upon its tip a punch by which a hole may be made and a ring inserted while the animal is held by the clamping-jaws, substan tially as described.
2. In a bull-ringer, the combination, with pivoted jaws A G, provided, respectively, with face (I, and punch a, of the pivoted jaw 13, having open-sided ring 0, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE BU'ITERWORTH.
