(Cl. 311-63) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A double edge injector razor with provisions for varying the position of the head in which the blade is carried and for adjusting the cutting angle of the blade as desired, one edge of the blade being exposed for cutting and the other edge being protected until exposed for use.
This invention relates to an adjustable double edge injector razor and magazine. The present razors available on the market all have certain disadvantages. In many razors now available, in order to change blades it is necessary to change the blade edge exposure setting and to practically disassemble the entire razor. This requires an unnecessary waste of time, and trial and error adjustment to again obtain a satisfactory blade edge exposure. The presently available razors do not have protection for the blade edge when not in use. Injector razors now available facilitate the insertion and removal of the blade but these have only one cutting edge and lack or have limited adjustment of the blade edge.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a double edge injector razor and magazine wherein the blade can be readily changed and adjusted as desired.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a double edge injector razor wherein only one edge at a time is exposed for shaving with the other edge protected until ready for use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a double edge injector razor wherein both edges of the blade are protected when the blade head is in a neutral and out of use position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a double edge injector razor and magazine wherein the blade head may be moved to alternate positions exposing either side of the blade, or to a neutral position for blade edge protection.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a double edge injector razor wherein the blade edge exposure may be varied and positively locked in a multiplicity of positions.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings and specifically FIGS. l to 12 thereof, an adjustable double edge inejctor razor 10 in accordance with the invention is illustrated. The razor 10 includes ya razor head 11 and handle 12. The handle 12 has an outer housing 14 composed of two like semi-cylindrical ribbed strip portions 15 land two like rectangular strips 16. The strips 15 can -be of synthetic plastic material, such as nylon, but other suitable materials may be used. The strips 16 are preferably made of thin gauge spring type metal. The strips 15 have two lengthwise extending grooves 17 wherein the two metal strips 16 are retained. The plastic strips 15 are held together at 20 by corresponding symmetrical inwardly extending pins 21 and sockets 22 which are fitted together during assembly, one of the three pairs 20 being illustrated in more detail in FIG. 8.

The knob 23 has detent holes 25 in the topmost surface 26 for engagement by dimples 27 in a spring 28 which is retained in the.l strips 15 and bears on the top surface 26 of the knob 23. The knob 23 can have as many holes 25 as desired and to provide the desired range of blade adjustment, eight being a preferred number. The knob 23 has number indicia engraved or otherwise marked on its outside surface corresponding to the detent holes 25. The upwardly extending shaft 24 is journaled at-its lower end 31 in a plate 30 which is joined to the strips 15 and 16 at its outer edge and serves also to hold the strips 15 and 16 together. The 'shaft 24 is journaled at its upper end 32 in a plate 33 which is similar to plate 30 and is securelyy fastened to the strips 15 and 16 at its outer edge. Two retaining collars 34 are provided attached to the shaft 24 one on each side of the platel 33 which collars 34 serve to preventvertical movement of the shaft 24.y
Theshaft 24 on the upper side of plate 33 terminates in a hollow interiorly threaded screw receiving socket portion 36. A shaft 37 is provided threadably engaged at its lower end in the threaded socket portion 36 of the shaft 24. The shaft 37 extends vertically upwardly through a hole 38 in a base plate 39 and through a collar 40 and is integral with a horizontal shaft 41 of razor blade base assembly 42. A helical spring 44 on the shaft 37 is interposed 'between the collar 40 and the base plate 39.
The base plate 39, as shown more fully in FIG. 7, is of rectangular shape carried in retaining brackets 43 in strips 15 with two vertical upwardly extending 'support arms 45 carried thereby and integral therewith. The arms 45 have two horizontally outwardly extending half cylindrical bearings 46 integral therewith having outer curved bearing surfaces 47 Iand inner curved bearing surfaces 48.
The razor blade head 11 has an outer housing 50 which is composed of two symmetrical halves 51. rPhe halves 51 each has a downward plate 52 of curved shape in cross section, the plates 52 being retained and pressed together by the upper end portions of strips 16.
Referring now specifically to FIGS. 2, 3, 5 and 7 the housing plates 52 have on the -bottom thereof downwardly extending arcuate arms 55 which extend around the outer surface 47 and retain the blade housing 50 to the bearings 46.
Two bearing ribs 56 are also provided on the plate portions 52 spaced interiorly of arms 55 and which engage the inner bearing surfaces 48 of the bearings 46.
The plates 52 have attaching plates 57 extending upwardly integral therewith which plates 57 have vertical ears 58 on each end thereof connected by a curved guard plate 60.
The attaching plates 57 at their lower portions have stop ledges 59 and 67 for resilient engagement by the upper end portions of the spring strips 16. A slot 61 is provided between guard plate and plate 57 for the reception of a razor blade bed plate 62. The ears 58 of the housing 50 each has a key or tongue hole 54 therein for the reception of a tongue of ya blade magazine 71. The ears 58 each also has one half of :a horizontal blade receiving slot 63 formed therein for the reception of a razor blade 75. T'he ears 58 at the ends of the slot 63 have blade engaging face portions 77 which engage the upper surface of the blade at the corners thereof when the housing half sections 51 are held together and in their central and tilting operating positions, and engaged by the bed plates 62. The bed plates 62 have horizontal serrated guard bars or ribs 72 extending therealong and bearing on the outer edge 58a of ears 58 to provide a guard for the edge 100 of the razor blade 75 as shown more fully in FIG. 3A. The razor blade bed plates 62 are symmetrical and attached to angularly inclined downwardly extending legs 6,4 which legs 64 are re-A wat@ s at the bottom by a sprmg retaining clip 65. The clip 65`draws the legs, 64 together-tand accordingly bed plates 62, guard bars .72 as well as the head portion 11 are held in assembled relation. y..-
The blade magazine 71, as illustrated in FIGS. 12 to 15, includes an outer housing ofsynthetic plastic-or other material 'as desired. The housing 80 has upper horizontal wall 81, lower horizontal wall 82, vertical front wall 90, inclined rear wall 91', Vand vertical-side 'connect-v ing walls 83. The upper wall 81 has av slot' 84ftherein extending its length for the reception ofa tapered rectangular blade engaging tongue 85 of a blade pusher 86.v The blade pusher 86 has an upper plate 87 attached'to the tongue 85 and' with suitable gripping surface '88 thereon. The housing 80, on the front wall 90 there-of, has a tongue 70 thereon of tapered rectangular shape adapted to engage the slot 54 in the ears 58 and is adapte ed to spread the ears 58 for insertion of a blade 75 into the razor 10. The wall -90 has a slot 92 therein at the top thereof of such height and width as to permit a single blade 75 to pass therethrough. A spring 94 is shown which bears on the bottom wall 82 and the lowermost blade of a stack of razor blades 75 urging a stack of blades 75 upwardly'along guideribs 96 and 97 for engagement by the tongue 85 of the pusher 86. vThe guide `ribs 96 `and 97 orient the blades 75 and position them for movement upwardly and for directed and guided discharge. Projections 98 are provided beneath the top wall 81 for engagement by projections 99 on the pusher 86 for limiting the outward movement of the pusher 86.
A preferred form of blade 75 (see FIG. 11) isv of rectangular shape with two cutting edges 100 and tapered slots 101 in front and rear-edges 102 and 103 of the blade 75. The slots 101 are adapted to receive the pusher tongue 85 and due to their taper do not hang up on the tongue 85. The interengagement of the pusher tongue 85 and slot 101 Orients the blade 75 to be advanced and during advancing.
At the same time upon return of the tongue 85 with overtravel engagement clearance is provided to facilitate engagement at the slot 101 of the next blade to beadvanced.
The mode of use will now be pointed out. j
The razor 10 may have its blade head 11 moved to any desired position, as shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 12. The tongue 70 of the blade magazine 71 is inserted into the hole 54. This tongue 70 causes the housing halves 51 to separate and any old blade upon insertion is no longer secured in the head 11. This separation also provides clearance for entry ofthe pusher tongue 85. The blade pusher 86 is moved forward in the slot 84 wherein the topmost blade of the blades 75 is engagedbythe pusher tongue 85 in its slot 101. Further movement of the pusher 86 forces the blade 75 out the slot 92 and into the slot 63 in the blade head 11. This forward movement continues until the blade is positioned as desired or vstop 98 is reached. Entry of a new blade 75 from the -magazine 71 effects ejection of the old blade 75 through the opposite blade access opening 63. i
The tongue 70 of magazine 71 is withdrawn from the hole 54 and the halves 51 of the housing 50 are forced back together by the spring strips 16 and the clip 65. The blade 75 is then gripped at its four corners by the inside edges 77 of the ears 58.
In order to obtain blade edge exposure for shaving, the razor head 11 is moved either to the right or left position to expose above one of the guide bars 72 one edge 100` of the blade 75 for use. while protecting the other edge i tained andiheld together.A
100 by its downward movement in slot 61 below the top edge of the guard bar 72. The tilting of the bed plates 62 with respect to the blade 75 and guard plate 60 effects such edge exposure, as shown in FIG. 2 from a protected blade position as shown in FIG. 3.
The knob 23 is then turned to the desired numbered position. The shaft 24 thru threads 36 and shaft 37, causes the blade base assembly 42 to move upward or downward depending on the blade edge exposure required and direction of motion of knob 23 which acts on the base plate 62 to cause greater or less of the blade edge 109 to be exposed above the guard bar 72 in the slot 61. Further adjustment can be m'ade as desired. When the other blade edge 190 is desired to be utilized for shaving, the blade head 11 is moved to opposite position and used as needed without any further adjustment unless adjustment is desired.
It will be noted that the central positioning of the head 11, illustrated particularly in PIG. 3, provides for guarding the blade edges 100 during shipping, and between successive uses, for protection of the blade edges 10U and for safety.
I claim:
1. A double edge injector razor comprising a blade having opposite longitudinal cutting edges,
a handle,
a blade `receiving and holding head having opposite separable housing portions,
each of said housing portions having ends with an outer guard plate and a guard bar therebetween,
said housing portions each having a longitudinal slot between the guard plate and the guard bar for blade edge exposure,
said housing portion having aligned slots in said ends for blade access,
said housing portion each having blade engaging portions at the ends of the longitudinal slot for engagement with top corners of the blade,
opposite bed plates at least one of which is in longitudinal central engagement with the blade,
pivotal connections between said housing portions and said handle for shifting said head to a cutting position,
pivotal connections between said bed plates and said handle, and
members carried by said handle for varying the relative locations of said pivotal connections and thereby varying the cutting edge exposure of the blade.
2. A double edge injector razor as dened in claim 1 in which said pivotal -connections between said bed plates `and said handle has a shaft extending longitudinally of said handle, and
a positioning shaft in threaded engagement with said rst mentioned shaft, and
a positioning knob connected to said positioning shaft for rotating said positioning shaft.
3. A double edge injector razor as defined in claim 1 in which said housing portions are separable,
said bed plates are separable and have leg portions,
a resilient clip holds said housing portions and said leg portions in assembled relation.
