Mount, New Providence, N.J., assignor of fifty percent to Albert C. Nolte, In, New York, N.Y. Filed Jan. 6, 1964, Ser. No. 335,943 5 Claims. (Cl. 128-349) This invention resides in medical and surgical equipment and in particular to constructions therefor for retaining a bacteria free climate for such equipment. More particularly, the invention relates to an improved drainage tube for use in medical and surgical drainage equipment.
One of the drawbacks in passing catheters is the possibility of ascending infection of the urinary tract. This danger of infection is due to contamination or desterilization of the exposed ends of the catheter tube and/ or drainage tube. The exposure of the open end of the drainage tube is usually brought about when the drainage tube is removed from the catheter tube in order to connect the catheter tube to a leg bag or when the catheter itself is temporarily discontinued. Desterilization of the open end of the drainage tube might also occur if the drainage tube is inadvertently put down on some foreign object prior its being connected to the catheter tube.
It is the object of this invention to eliminate or materially reduce the possibility of desterilization and contamination of the end of the drainage tube exposed during the periods when the tube is not connected to a catheter tube or at the times just prior to connection of said drainage tube to a catheter tube when the drainage tube might inadvertently be put down or placed on a non-sterile surface.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a filtering device in the drainage tube to further prevent the possibility of harmful bacteria contaminating said drainage tube.
The objects of this invention are met by providing an external guard around the end of the drainage tube where the catheter tube is to be connected. This guard serves to isolate the plug found on the end of the drainage tube. The invention also contemplates that the space between the outer portion of the plug and the inside diameter of the guard should be filled with a substance coated with a bactericidal preventive material such as an oligodynamic silver composition to further reduce the possibility of any contamination of the plug on the exposed end of the drainage tube. The end of the drainage tube remote from the catheter connection can also be fitted with a filtering bag with said filtering bag also being filled with a substance coated with a bactericidal preventive material.
Referring now to the attached drawing;
The figure is a sectional view partially diagrammatic of a preferred embodiment of the invention utilizing the protective guard at one end of the drainage tube and a filtering bag at the other end.
A tapered plug 2 is mounted on one end of a flexible drainage tube 4. The plug 2 is sufliciently tapered so as to accommodate a standard catheter tube, said tube being frictionally forced over the outside of the tapered plug. A
Patented Aug. 13, 1968 guard '6 is then fastened around the plug 2 with said guard extending from slightly below the bottom of the plug 2 to slightly above the tapered top of the plug 2. The space 8 between the inside circumferential surface of the guard '6 and the outside circumferential tapered surface of the plug 2 is filled as diagrammatically shown in the figure, with a substance such as paper 10 coated or impregnated with a bactericidal preventive material such as Oligodynamic Silver 11. The end of the drainage tube remote from the tapered plug 2 enters into a filter 12, having an inside diameter slightly larger than the inside diameter of said drainage tube 4. The filter 12 is also filled with a substance coated with a bactericidal preventive material 10 such as an Oligodynamic silver composition 11. Another drainage tube 14 is attached to the other end of the filter with said drainage tube 14 then entering into a standard measuring chamber or disposal bag not shown in the figure.
What is claimed is:
1. A drainage tube for use in draining body fluids comprising, in combination, a tube, a hollow plug adapted to one end of said tube and having its external surface formed so as to receive a catheter tube, a guard externally disposed around said plug and having sides laterally spaced from said plug, said space being filled with a substance coated with a bactericidal preventive material, a filtering bag connecting the end of said drainage tube remote from said plug, said filtering bag being filled with a substance coated with Oligodynamic Silver.
2. A drainage tube for use in draining body fluids comprising, in combination, a tube, a hollow plug adapted to one end of said tube and having its external surface formed so as to receive a catheter tube, and a guard externally disposed around said plug and having sides laterally spaced from said plug, said space being filled with a substance coated with a bactericidal preventive material.
3. A drainage tube according to claim 2, wherein the substance is coated with Oligodynamic Silver.
4. A drainage tube according to claim 2, including a filtering bag connecting the end of said drainage tube remote from said plug.
5. A drainage tube according to claim 4, wherein said filtering bag is filled with a substance coated with a bactericidal preventive material.

Claims (1)

1. A DRAINAGE TUBE FOR USE IN DRAINING BODY FLUIDS COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, A TUBE, A HOLLOW PLUG ADAPTED TO ONE END OF SAID TUBE AND HAVING ITS EXTERNAL SURFACE FORMED SO AS TO RECEIVE A CATHETER TUBE, A GUARD EXTERNALLY DISPOSED AROUND SAID PLUG AND HAVING SIDES LATERALLY SPACED FROM SAID PLUG, SAID SPACE BEING FILLED WITH A SUBSTANCE COATED WITH A BACTERICIDAL PREVENTIVE MATERIAL, A FILTERING BAG CONNECTING THE END OF SAID DRAINAGE TUBE REMOTE FROM SAID PLUG, SAID FILTERING BAG BEING FILLED WITH A SUBSTANCE COATED WITH OLIGODYNAMIC SILVER.
