UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. LEONARD, OF LANDISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
H AT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,793, dated April 27,1886.
Application filed December 28, 1885. Serial No. 186,557.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. LEONARD, residing at Landisburg, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hats, and is specially intended to produce a ventilated hat which will keep the head of the wearer cool and prevent sun-strokes and headaches, produced by overheating the head.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat made according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section showing a hat of slightly different construction involving myinvention.
A indicates the body of the hat: which is made in any well-known fashion as far as the brim and base of the crown are concerned, and composed of felt or other material. The top B of this body is made concavei. 6., the reverse of the well-known Derby styleand is perforated with holes of a suitable size to secure free ventilation, as shown at O C. The sides of the hat may also have ventilating-passages, as at D D. A removable convex or other shaped crownpiece, E, surmounis the hat, leaving a space between itself and the top B. This piece may extend down as far as desired at the sides of the hat, covering all the hat-body, exceptthe band, if thought best. The crownpiece E may extend outside the hat-body, as in Figs. 1 and 2, or the body may be rabbeted, as in Fig. 3, so that there wvill be no offset on the outside of the hat where the body and crown-piece join. The

. removable crown-piece may be secured in place by ornamental clasps or buttons, as at F; or the fit may be so close that no fastening device is necessary, especially in stiff hats. The crown-piece has a number of ventilatingapertures, G G.
Between the crown E and top B of the hat there is room for a sponge, H, or other light absorbent material, which, being placed in this space between the top B and the crown E, secures a uniform low temperature for the head of the wearer.
I claim 1. The combination, with a hat-body having a perforated concave top, of a detachable crown-piece having perforations therein, and an absorbent material between the top of the body and the crown, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a hat-body having" a perforated concave top, of a detachable perforated crown-piece extending over the same, external clasps to retain said crownpiece, and an absorbent material between the body and crown, as set forth.
3. A hat-body having a perforated concave top and external rabbet. a perforated detachable crown-piece extending over said top, an absorbent material between the hat body and crown, and external ornamental clasps, which attach the body and ci'ownpiece, substantially as described.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence-oi two witnesses.
GEORGE H. LEONARD.
