Feb. 4, 1969 o, MACH DUAL PURPOSE BAG-TYPE CONTAINER Filed Aug. 25. 1965 United States Patent O 3,425,539 lDUAL PURPOSE BAG-TYPE CONTAINER otakar Mach, 236 E. 61st St., New York, N.Y. 10021 Filed Aug. 23, 196s, ser. No. 481,691 U.s. cl. 206-19.s 1 claim Int. Cl. 60n 3/08, 3/10, 3/12 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Briefly stated, the invention comprises the provision of a synthetic resinous bag having first and second side walls sealed at three peripheral edges. One of the walls extends above the upper edge of the other wall, and has attached thereto on an outer surface thereof a reinforcing member which is substantially coextensive with that portion of the wall which extends above the opposite w-all. The reinforcing member is secured at the peripheral edges thereof, except that a lower edge thereof, where the sealing is performed a short distance above a transverse edge to form a lip capable of limited flexing, to form stop means where the bag is sandwiched between a window or trunk lid of an automobile and surrounding structure, whereby the same rmay be used as an emergency signal, the lip formed thereby preventing slippage so that the signal remains in place.
This invention'relrates generally to the field of flexible bags, and more particularly to an improved dual purposetype bag suitable for use in collecting waste and refuse in an automobile.
It is among the principal objects of the present invention to provide an improved form of bag which may be used as an emergency signal to be displayed exteriorly of the vehicle should the same, or its driver, become disabled.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of a synthetic resinous waste bag having means incorporated therein forming 4a ledge which may be engaged'by the lip of a trunk lid, or the edge of a win-dow pane, for purposes of retaining the same in position whereby the same may be clearly displayed to passing motorists.
Yet another 'object of the invention lies in the position of an improved bag of the class described which may maintain itself in semistiffened condition at all times, thereby facilitating both display and waste-collecting functions.
Still another object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved bag of the class described in which the cost of fabrication may be of a reasonably low order,
with consequent wide sale, distribution and use.
A feature of the invention lies in the unusually attractive appearance of the disclosed embodiment.
These objects and features as well as other incidental ends and advantages will more fully appear in the progress of the following disclosure, and be pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, to which reference will be made in the specification, similar reference characters have been employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a similar View in elevation thereof, showing the side opposite that seen in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary View in perspective showing the device in linstalled condition when used as an emergency display.
FIGURE 4 is a fnagtnentary View in perspective showing a similar application in another location upon a vehicle.
FIGURE 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view as seen from the plane 5-5 in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 6 is a longitudinal sectional view as seen from the plane 6-6 in FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 7 is 1an enlarged fragment-ary sectional view as seen from the plane 7-7 in FIGURE 3.
In accordance with the invention, the device, generally indicated by reference character 10, comprises broadly: a finst side wall element 11, a second side wall element 12 and a stiffening element 13.
The first side wall element 11, like the other components of the device, is fonmed of sheet synthetic resinous material, and is bounded by side edges 15 land 16, a lower edge 17 and an upper edge 18, as well as inner and outer surfaces 19 and 19a, respectively.
The second side wall element 12 is preferably formed of similar synthetic resinous material having impregnated therein a fluorescent dye, las this side will be displayed when the device is used as 'an alarm signal. It is bounded by side edges 20 and 21 which are each sealed to the edges 15 and 16, respectively, a lower edge 22 heat-sealed to the lower edge 17 and upper edge 23 positioned above the upper edge 18. The edge 23 includes an arched portion 24 beneath which there is provided la through opening 2S to permit the device then to be engaged with a knob or other projection to suspend the same within the interior of an automobile. The opening 25 communicates with an expandable slot 26 to facilitate such engagement.
The stiifening element 13 is also fonmed of relatively thick synthetic resinous material, and is heat-sealed along the periphery thereof -to the upper portion of the second side wall element 12. It is bounded by a lower edge 28, side edges 29 and 30 and an upper edge 31. From `a consideration of FIGURE 2, it will be apparent that the line of heat-sealing 32 which interconnects the stiffening element 13 with the second side wall element 12 is spaced albove the lower edge 28, so that there is formed a lip portion 33 extending therebelow.
During use as an alarm signal, the outer surface 34 of the element 12 is pnovided with a suitable legend (see FIGURE 2) which may be displayed outwardly of the vehicle. As seen in FIGURE 3, the same is suspended within a window 37 of the vehicle by first cranking down the window, inserting the stiffening element 13 such that it is just past the window seal, and again closing the window. The presence of the lip-forming portion 33 will prevent the same from slipping downA and the device will remain suspended at the upper portion of the window opening. In the position shown in FIGURE 3, the legend may be seen through the window.
In the installation shown in FIGURE 6, the device then is positioned such that the lip-fonming portion 33 is beneath the edge 41 of a trunk lid 39, to wedge the device between the lid and the sill 40. In this case, also, the thickened lip-forming portion 33 prevents the same from being accidentally pulled outward-ly without the trunk lid first being opened.
I wish it to be understood that I do not consider the invention limited to the precise details of structure shown and set forth in this specification, for obvious modifications will occur to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.
I claim:
