SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,507, dated October 12, 1886.

Application filed November 14, 1885. Serial No. 182,885. (No model) music, photographs, &c., in a simple and cf ficient manner. I accomplish this objeetby the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification,

In carrying out my invention I employ the usual boards,'A, binding in the back between them a stiff center piece of board, B, upon the theinner face of which is riveted the locks O, the rivets passing through theplate of the locks and board B of the back of the file. The locks consist of a pin pivoted to the lugs D of: the plate, from which extends at right angles a locking-arm, D, the outer end of which is provided with a hole, D The opposite end of the plate carries a small snapbolt, E, which is thrown forward by a spiral spring, E, and the end of the bolt enters the hole D in the locking-arm D,when the latter is thrown down into a notch, F, cut in front of the bolt, of sufficient size to receive it. Two of these locking devices are employed, and the hanging of the pivoted pins in their respective lugs is such that the rightangled lockingarms when raised from their respective grooves or notches will remain in a vertical, inclined, or horizontal position, and be easily borne downward and snapped into their respective places in the looks, when desired, and upon these arms are placed in regular order the sheets or folios to be filed, which is accomplished in and by the following means:

The filing-hooks consist of a peculiarly-form'- ed wire staple or fastener, G, bent or constructed so as'to form two barbs or points and a center loopjor eyelet hole, G, and two or more of these staples or fasteners are employed for each sheet filed. These staples or fasteners are connected to the sheet to be bound in the following manner, to wit: To the inner face of the right-hand board of the cover I attach by means of pins two cleats, which may be made of wood, and in the face of the cleats I form a die to receive the loop or eyelet and the two horizontal arms of they staple, and when in place the two barbs or points are vertical and in position to receive the sheet, which latter is pressed downward, the barbs passing through the center margin of the sheet, in which position they are bent down upon each other,when

the sheet is folded over and strung upon the pivoted arms through the medium of the loops or eyelets in regular order one after the other until the boards or covers are filled withsheets. The dies for the loops or eyelets of the staple or clamp are set upon the cover directly in line with the pivoted arms, by which is obtained a sure gage or measurement of the distance between the pivoted arms, and all the eyelets or loops in the sheet will be at a uniform distance apart, and each folded sheet will be separate onthe file, and can be easily opened and spread out without binding of the parts along the center margins or folds.

In filing photographs the staples or fasteners may be driven or screwed into the edge of the photograph or mat containing the picture, and then strung upon the locking-arms connected to a photographic album, in the same manner as in filing newspapers.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the boards or covers of a newspaper or other file, the stiff center piece, B, the plates 0, secured thereon and provided with arms D, pivoted in the lugs D,

and the spring-bolts E, adapted tolock said pivoted arms, substantially as shown and described.
