IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-NIPPLE PROTECTORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,418, dated May 27, 1862.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN HAsKINs, of 5011 bury, in the county of Norfolk and Common wealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Gun-Nipple Protector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operationof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view with the chain attached; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a top view; Fig. 4:, a bottom view, and Fig. 5, a perspective view, showing another method of attaching the chain.

Like parts are indicated by the same letters in all the drawings.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing a gun-nipple protector of india-rubber or any of its compounds, for the purpose of effectually excluding wet and dampness from the nipple and fire-channel, preventing the nipple from being broken or bruised by snapping the hammer upon it, as in manual exercise, and also preventing the percussioncap upon the nipple, when covered by the said protector, from ever being accidentally exploded in carrying or handling the gun.-

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its but the hole 0 should be a little smaller than the nipple, so as to fit, by expanding, sufficiently close upon the latter to exclude the wet, as well as to retain its place, whether the hammer rests upon it or not. The rubber will also stretch enough to cover the percussioncap.

That part B of the protector over the hole 0, and onto which the hammer strikes, is nearly hemispherical, as represented in the drawings.

Near the smaller end of the part Ais ahole,

(1, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. through which is inserted a ring, R, and to this ring is attached a chain, S, Fig. 1, which is terminated by another ring, T, by means of which the protector may be readily and securely attached to a gun.

In Fig. 5 is shown another method of attaching the chain to the protector, E being a strip of brass or other suitable metal clasped around the rubber till the two ends meet, when one link of the chain is passed through, as shown. e e e are projecting cars from the strip E, and are turned down over the top and bottom of the protector, to keep it from slipping out.

Having thus described the nature and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S.'

A gun nipple protector constructed of india rubber or any of its compounds, substantially as described, and for the objects specified.
