Abstract

A SURFACE DRAIN WHICH IS FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE HAVING A TRAP WITHIN THE SUMP OF THE DRAIN, FORMED BY AN EASILY REMOVABLE BAFFLE AND A MEANS WHEREBY SURFACE WATER THAT DOES NOT GO THROUGH A GRID SET IN THE TOP OF THE DRAIN IS PASSED INTO THE SUMP BY VIRTUE OF A RECESS AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE GRID BETWEEN THE GRID AND DRAIN CASING WHERE A SURFACE COVERING MATERIAL CAN TERMINATE SO THAT LIQUID SEEPING PAST THE GRID CAN FLOW OVER THE BAFFLE LIP OR TOP AND THENCE INTO THE SUMP.

Ef 5 06 U.S. Cl. 210--164 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE -A surface drain which is ush with the surface having a trap within the sump of the drain, formed by an easily removable baille and a means whereby surface water that does not go through a grid set in the top of the drain is passed into the sump by virtue of a recess around the perimeter of the grid between the grid and drain casing where a surface covering material can terminate so that liquid seeping past the grid can ilow over the baille lip or top and thence into the sump.
The present invention concerns a surface drain with Water trap. Such a drain could be used for draining a surface such as a roof or yard where there is a requirement to set the drain into the surface.
An object of the present invention is to provide a drain which can be cleaned easily without having to remove the surface or iloor covering surrounding it.
The present invention consists in a flush surface drain with removable grid wherein there is contained within an outer casing of the drain a sump and a removable baille spaced from the inner wall of the sump so as to leave a gap between the baille and sump wall and form a trap within the sump, wherein the outer casing is provided with a connection for conveying away liquid collected in the drain, and wherein the casing is provided with supporting means for the grid and baille and the dimensions of the baille are such that when the grid has been removed, the baille can be lifted out of the casing.
In the accompanying drawing a vertical cross-section of a drain according to the invention is shown.
In carrying the invention into effect by one convenient mode by way of example the drawing shows a drain having a discharge connecting piece. The drain is surrounded by an outer casing 2 having a discharge connecting piece 1, which casing connects downwardly to a sump at a place 5 underneath the upper rim or lip 4 of the sump, near where a circulating baille is connected at the top at 7 sealingly to the casing, which baille hangs down into the sump, thereby forming a gap 8 between the sump wall 9 and the baille 6, the gap being in direct communication with a circulating gap 10 between the bailles lower edge 11 and the sump base 12.
Since water flowing into the drain past and under the batlles lower edge 11 thence through the gap 8 and over the upper sump rirn 4 into the annular space 13 between baille, casing and cavity, a large flow through surface results. The space 13 is in direct connection with the discharge connecting piece 1 and by virtue of the condition just mentioned, the connecting piece can be arranged relatively high in relation to the casing. Also the sump edge may be relatively high. The vertical distance between the rim 4 and edge 11 can therefore without diiliculty be selected of such dimension, in spite of the restricted height ice of the drain, that the requirements regarding water trap construction are satisfied.
The baille 6 may be removably arranged, abutting with an upper ilange 14 against an inner shoulder 15 on the upper part of the casing.
Because of the direct connection between the space 13 and the discharge connecting piece, the seal between the baille and the casing must be good. In this connection a ring 16 made of for example rubber is inserted in an annular groove in the flange 14.
The drain has a grid 17, which rests on the flange 14 and engages in an annular recess 18 inside an outer llange 19 of the casing 2. In this arrangement, the surface covering 20, consisting for instance of plastics material, is introduced in the zone 21 into the recess 18 outside the grid 17.
The outer diameter of the ilange 14 is, in accordance with the invention, somewhat less than the diameter of the recess 18 together with covering section 21, so that the baille, after the removal of the grid, can be lifted out.
As can be seen from the drawing, the grid is fixed by means of a centre screw 22, on a column 23 projecting -from the sump base 12. When the grid is attached, the baille is also held securely in the prearranged position.
The covering section 21 has the advantage that moisture penetrating from above between the grid and this section can ilow over the ilange 14 inwardly into the drain, so that the penetration of moisture in the surface areas outside the drain is inhibited.
The drain which has been illustrated and described consists preferably of plastics material. Of course any other material, such as cast iron, may also be considered.
I claim:
1. A finished surface drain comprising in combination:
(i) an outer casing having an outlet;
(ii) an inner baille removably supported within said outer casing and forming a trap therewith;
(iii) a grid independently removably supported within said outer casing above said baille;
(iv) a covering material located on the surface around the drain and extending over the upper extremity of the outer casing and into a recess between the p'eriphery of the grid and the outer casing;
I(v) means defining a path adjacent the upper extremity of the baille for the penetration of moisture to the interior of the baille; and
(vi) means for preventing moisture from penetrating Ibetween the outer periphery of the baille and the outer casing; i whereby any moisture entering between the periphery of the grid and the covering material in the recess is caused to pass to the interior of the baille via the path means.
2. A drain as defined in claim 1 wherein the path is dened between the upper end of the baille and the under surface of the grid resting upon it.
3. A drain as defined in claim 1 wherein the means preventing moisture penetrating between the outer periphery of the baille and the outer casing comprises a seal formed of resilient material.
4. A drain as defined in claim 1 wherein a projecting support is provided within the interior of the baille to retain the grid.
