0. A. DAVIS.
STEAM FOG HORN.
No. 357,469. Patented Feb. 8', 1887.
l' gg 9///// HNvEN-r 13R- NITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
I CORNELIUS A. DAVIS, OF SOMERSET, MASSACHUSETTS.
STEAM FOG-HORN.
SPEQIPICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 357,469, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed October 19, 1886. Serial No. 216,611. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS A. DAVIS, of Somerset, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Steam Fog-Horns, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figare I is an exterior side view of the improved fog-horn with a portion of the mouth thereof broken away. Fig. II is a longitudinal section ofa portion of the invention. Fig. III is a cross-section of the fog-horn, taken on the dotted line so 00, Fig. II. Fig. IV isa rear end View of Fig. II.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the-figures.
In the said drawings, A is the mouth-piece, a portion only of which is shown. The inner end of the mouth-piece is provided with an interiorly-threaded couplingscrew, B, whereby it is attached to one end of the steam-reservoir G. The other end of the reservoir is covered with a cap, D, in which is inserted the steam-pipe a, which leads from a steamboiler. (Not shown.)
E is a throat-piece, which projects from a disk, b, screwed into the couplingscrew 13. (See Fig. II.) The throat-piece in itself embodies no inventiofi, but corresponds very nearlyin shape with others now commonly in use.
F is a tongue, which consists of a curved metallic plate corresponding in shape with the open side of the throatpiece. This tongue is inserted in the disk I) and held therein by means of the offsets c 0. (See Fig. IV.)
Gisa clamp placed over the throatpiece and tongue to hold them together.
The adj usting'of the tongue is accomplished by means of a set-screw, d. (Shown in Figs. II and III.) The curvature of the tongue is such as to give a greater steam-opening than is required, and the clamp G is afterward set up to effect the proper width of steam-aperture. The tone of the horn can be changed by moving the clamp longitudinally of the tongue and throat-piece, as by altering the length of the projecting or unsecured portion of the tongue the number of its vibrations, when acted on by the steam, is changed.
A small pipe, e, is used to carry 05 condensed steam from the steam-reservoir.
I claim as my invention In a fog-horn, the combination of the steamreservoir 0, steam-supply pipe at, water-discharge pipe e, and mouth-piece A, theinner end of which mouth-piece is provided with the disk I), throat-piece E, tongue F, and clamp G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
, CORNELIUS A. DAVIS. Witnesses:
