O'Connor ABSTRACT: A wheelbarrow which will be safely dumped by listing a secondary frame secured to the body carrying the load. This device prevents possible injury to the user, the barrow from tipping from one side or the other, or going over too far while dumping the contents thereof. The device includes a secondary frame which is pivoted at the front end and has a pair of handles at the other end for grasping and lifting the body while the operator stands upon a foot rest.
SAFETY WHEELBARROW This invention relates to wheelbarrows and more particularly to an improved wheelbarrow or the like.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a wheelbarrow which will have a main frame to which is pivotally secured a secondary frame, the secondary frame being secured by suitable fastening means to the body containing the load, the secondary frame having handle grips allowing for body to be dumped without tipping to the side or extending too far.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wheelbarrow which when it is being dumped will have its main frame stationary with the leg members in contact with the ground as well as the front wheel thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a wheelbarrow of the type described which will have footrest means include on the main frame thereof, said footrest means allowing the rear end of the main frame to remain stationary by the foot of the user being placed thereupon.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of the type described which will have guide means on the secondary frame allowing it to drop downwards after the contents have been unloaded from the body in alignment with the main frame.
Other objects of the present invention is to provide a safety wheelbarrow which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will become readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the present invention shown partly broken away with the dumping position shown in phantom lines;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary end view of one of the lifting handles and its attached rail.
According to this invention, a wheelbarrow includes an A-shaped configurated main frame 11. Aligned with main frame 11 is a pivotable frame 12 for a purpose which hereinafter will be described.
To pivotable frame 12 is fixedly secured a pair of spaced apart wedges 13 to which is secured fixedly the body 14 containing the load 15. Frame 12 is provided with a pair of spaced-apart extensions 16 to which are fixedly secured handles 17 for lifting body 14 and its associated frame 12.
A plurality of fasteners 18 secures frame 12 to wedges l3 and body 14 of wheelbarrow 10. A metal brace 19 is fixedly secured at its upper extremity to the forward end of body 14 and is pivotally secured at its lower extremity to the secondary frame 12 by means of a pin 20. To the extension 16 of frame 12 are secured fixedly a pair of guide members 21 which are secured by fasteners 22. Guide members 21 allow the extension 16 to align with the main frame 11 when body 14 is pivoted downwards to its normal carrying position.
Wheelbarrow 10 is also provided with footrest members 23 which are fixedly secured to the angular legs 24 and allows the main frame 11 to remain stationary with the legs 24 and the front wheel 25 on the ground when body 14 is lifted by means of handles 17.
In use, the operator when preparing to unload the contents of wheelbarrow 10 will release the main frame 1 1 so that the legs 24 contact the ground. The user then places his feet upon the footrest 23 and grasps the handle 17 thus pivoting body 14 upwards whereupon the forward edge of body 14 abuts with the forward end 26 of main frame 11 which serves as stop means to prevent overthrowing body 14.
It shall be noted that cross brace members 27 are secured between legs 24 to provide maximum rigidity therefor.
What I now claim is:
l. A wheelbarrow comprising an A-shaped main frame, a
ivotable secondary frame carried by said main frame rovidmg a means for safely dumping the load of the body of e said wheelbarrow, a pair of handles carried by said pivotable secondary frame providing a means for pivoting said body upward, and footrest means carried by said wheelbarrow for rendering said main frame stationary when dumping the contents of said body of said wheelbarrow, said secondary frame being pivotally secured to the upper portion of said main frame and said body being secured to wedge members attached fixedly to said secondary frame being provided with extensions to which said handles are secured for lifting to dump the contents thereof, and the forward end of said body including a brace member which is attached by pivoting means to the forward portion of said main frame, said forward end of said body striking the forward end of said main frame and which serves as stop means to prevent overthrowing said body when dumping the contents thereof.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said extensions of said secondary frame are provided with arcuate guide members which are secured fixedly by suitable fasteners to said extensions of said secondary frame, said guide members allowing said secondary and pivotable frame to descend downward and in alignment with said main frame after the contents of said body has been dumped and legs of said main frame are provided with footrest means, said footrest means serving to hold said main frame stationary upon the ground when lifting upon said secondary frame by means of said handles and thus prevents possible injury to the user by accidentally tipping said body to one side or over while dumping.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said main frame has the gripping portions extending beyond said handles of said secondary and pivotable frame, said extensions of said secondary and pivotable frame being further forward to gain maximum leverage when dumping the contents of said body and said handles of said main frame extend towards the rear of said wheelbarrow in order to not interfere with transporting said wheelbarrow to its dumping site and said legs of said main frame are provided with crossbar support members to insure maximum strength to said legs.

Claims (3)

1. A wheelbarrow comprising an A-shaped main frame, a pivotable secondary frame carried by said main frame providing a means for safely dumping the load of the body of the said wheelbarrow, a pair of handles carried by said pivotable secondary frame providing a means for pivoting said body upward, and footrest means carried by said wheelbarrow for rendering said main frame stationary when dumping the contents of said body of said wheelbarrow, said secondary frame being pivotally secured to the upper portion of said main frame and said body being secured to wedge members attached fixedly to said secondary frame being provided with extensions to which said handles are secured for lifting to dump the contents thereof, and the forward end of said body including a brace member which is attached by pivoting means to the forward portion of said main frame, said forward end of said body striking the forward end of said main frame and which serves as stop means to prevent overthrowing said body when dumping the contents thereof.
