SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,748, dated April 26, 1887.
(No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that-l, JOHN W. CULBERTSON, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Smoke or Puff Ball for the Treat ment of Diseases of the Head and Respiratory Organs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to treat the above named organs with iodo-carboline smoke, errhines, and other suitable remedies compounded into a very finely-powered state and applied by inhalation.
Theobject of my invention is,further,to provide a convenient receptacle for said compound, by means of which the fine smokelike particles may be thrown upon the atmosphere and inhaled, or may be ejected against a diseased surface.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of said receptacle, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are madea part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a'sectional view of the most approved form of my smoke orpuff ball. Fig. 2 is a plan View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows another manuer in which said ball may be constructed. Fig. 4. is a plan view of Fig. '3.
In Figs. 1 and 2, a is a hollow elastic ball, preferably of india-rubber, and about the size I) is a small opening in said ball, by means of which the compound designed to be used is entered and ejected. c is a covering cemented over hole b, of woven wire or cloth,
through which the smoke-like compound may be passed. dis an annular jacket cemented over the netting 0, having an opening concentric with the opening I) in the ball. Said jacket is preferably made of fine leather, and is for the purpose of preventing the edges of the netting from fraying. It may also contain the title and necessary trade-mark.
.In Figs. 3 and 4, e is the hollow ball as before, having an opening, f, through which the compound is entered. After the ball is partially filled, as shown in the sectional views, openingf is closed by means of a covering, g, cemented over it, or in any other convenient manner. A number of small openings, M, are placed (preferably) in the opposite side of the ball from said covering, or they may be placed in the covering 9 itself.
The use of the ball is as follows: The ball is only partially filled with the compound desired to be used, leaving room for its sides to be thrown in by asudden and gentle pressure. The small screened openings of the ball being brought near to the mouth or nose of the patient, a sudden pressure is brought upon the ball, throwing a stream of air from it, upon which are carried-the smokelike particles of the compound. These remedies in the form of smoke are thus carried upon the breath into all portions of the respiratory organism. The principal use of my invention lies in the treatment in this manner of catarrhal and brouohial troubles.
I am aware that rubber vessels with projecting nozzles have been used for projecting powders into a particular spot; but I am not aware that a rubber vessel has been used for and adapted to diffusing the powder upon the atmosphere.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hollow elastic ball having a screened opening at a single point, flush with the walls of the ball, through which a medicated compound may be driven by pressure upon the ball, said screened opening adapted to spreading the compound upon the atmosphere in the form of smoke for the purposes of inhalation, substautially as shown and set forth,
JOHN W. OULBERTSON.
