Beit known that l, JOHN J. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ocean Beach, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey,v have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Water-Filteraof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in water-filters; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a filter embodying my improvements, showing the same arranged in a well and connected to the lower end of a pumptube. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved filter with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is a detachedvperspective view of the central section ofthe filter. Fig. .4 is a perspective view of the filter complete. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on the line wx of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the lower eud of the inclosing-case.
A represents an inclosing basketf or case, which comprises the bottom cap, B, the top cap, C, and the clamping-bolts D to connect the said caps together.
The bottom cap comprises the 'circular plate b, having the vertical upwardly-projecting iiange b at its perimeter and the vertical upwardly-projecting sleeve4 or socket .b2 at its center and arranged concentrically with the iiange b'. From the lower side of the bottom cap project four' radial ears, Z13, which are arranged at equal distances apart, and are provided with openings b4.
The top cap, C, comprises a circular plate,
c, having a depending flange, c', at its perimeter, a depending sleeve, c2, at its center of the same diameter as the sleeve b2, and a socket, ci, onits upper side communicating with a central opening in the plate c, and adapted to receive the pump-tube, as shown at Fig. 1. From the upper side of the top cap, C, project four radial ears, c4, which are provided with openings adapted to receive the upper ends of the clamping-bolts D.

c6 represents vertical strips, which extend along the outer sides of the outer case, e, and have their upper ends curved outward and upward in order to form ears e6, by means of which the section E may be lifted from the lower cap, B.
F represents an annularsection, the exterior diameter of which is somewhat less than the interior diameter of the section E, and is adapted to be placed on the inner side of the said section E. The section F is similar in construction to the section E, and has the inner and outer cases, f and f, the lower head, f, and the upper head, f3, which ca-ps close the spaces between the ends of the cases ff.
f4 represents vertical strips, which are secured on the outer side of the section F, and the upper ends of the said strips project above the top of the said section to form ears f5, by means of which the section F may be removed from the outer section, E.
G represents the central inner section, the exterior diameter of` which is somewhat less than the interior diameter of the section F. The section G is composed of the outer and inner annular cases, g and g', the bottom annular head, g2, and the upper annular head, g, which heads close the spaces between the ends of the cases g and g'. The said section G is adapted to retain fine gravel, as represented at g5 in Figs. 1 and 5. The outer side of the section G is provided with vertical strips g4, the upper ends of which project above the said sections and form ears g, by means of which the section G may be removed from the section F. The latter is designed to have the space bctween its inner and outer cases llcd with pieces of charcoal,as represented at j in Figs. l and 5.
It will be observed,by reference to Fig. 1, that the sleeves of the upper and lower caps, B and G, enter the central portion of the in- IOO teriorscetion,G,and thus retain the saine firmly in the center of the iiielosiiig basket or ease.
After the sections E, F, and G have been nested and filled with filtering material, the upper cap, C, is filled with sponge, as represented at 0" in Fig. l,and when the said upper cap is placed over the nested sections the sponge is compressed on the upper ends thereof. rllie clamping-bolts D are then inserted in the openings of thevprojecting ears of' the upper and lower caps, and when the clanipingnuts g are screwed to the upper ends of the said clamping bolts the detachable parts of the filter are securely fastened together, as shown at Figs. 1 and 41.
By reference to Fig. l it will be understood' that the Water before reaching the lower end ot` the pumptnbe has to pass through the nested sections of the filter and tlirongli the filtering material confined therein, and is thns thoroughlystrained and purified.
I do not desire to limit myself to the use of' my filter in connection with wells or eisterns, as it may be also advantageously employed iii water-coolers, tanks, and other receptacles for water.
Having thus described my invention, I elaiin-f- 1. In a filter, the combination of the central an nular section oreasc,G,haviiig the open ends, the annular removable concentricseetioiis su rrounding tlie section G, and the detachable caps fitting on and closing the ends of all the sections, said caps having the central sleeves fitting in the'open ends of the central section, substantially as described.
2. In a filter, the eoinbinationof the central annular section or ease, G, having the open ends, the annular removable concentric sections surrounding tlie section G, and the detachable caps fitting on and closing the ends of' all the sections, substantially as described.
8. In a filter, the combination of the annular sections or cases nested within one another, and each having the concentricscreens and the annular heads fixed to the ends of the screens, a sponge arranged overthe upper ends of the sections or eases, and the caps B C, fitting on the ends of all the sections and connected together by bolts for confining the packing and sections in place,for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.

In a filter,an annular section comprising the inner and outer perforated cases arranged coiieentrically one within the other to leave an intermediate chamber, the annular imperforate heads fixed to the ends of the eases,closing the spaces between the said cases, and the vertical strips secured to the annular heads, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a filter,the combination of the central cylindrical section or ease having the open ends, the cylindrical sections nested tegetlier and surrounding the central section, and the caps I3 C, extending over the ends of all the sections, substantially as described.
