To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JosErH. GILMER, a citi- Y zen of the United States, residing at Savannah,. in the county of Ohatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools; and I do declare the following to bee; full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation showing my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the slide'at an oblique angle to the body of the square; Fig. 3, a crosssection on line was of Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A represents the body, and B the fixed right-angled arm, of a try-square. I make a horizontal slot, a, in the body, extending at right angles to the fixed arm B, and above it make a suitable scale, C. v

D is a movable arm, provided with the guide-projection d,'which fits into the slot and slides therein, and d a hole through which passes the broad-headed screw E. 1

F is a thumb-nut which works on the screw,

7 and G a washer which may be used between I the nut and the arm D.

The adjacent perpendicular edges b? (1 of the arms B D are carried up to the same height and drawn to a point, so that they may also serve as calipers.

It will be readily'secn that the arms B D may be placed at varying distances apart, while the movable arm may stand parallel to the fixed one, or at-any angle to the body'A. The'tool may also be provided with the screwdriver G and saw-set H, so as to make it unnecessary for' a workman to carry so many separate tools.

By adjusting the movable arm D the instru ment may be used as a compass or calipers to size any square or round body, the dimension being indicated on the scale, and rendering a rule unnecessary. It also may be used as an ordinary try-square or a bevel-square.

When my invention is applied to the common square, a carpenter can lay off ten times as much work in a given time as he can without it. 2

What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is- I A compound tool consisting of the slotted body A, fixed arm B, and movable arm D, the

body being formed with screwdriver G and saw-set notch H, as shown and described.
