Description
(No Model.) J.. MW-AGGONRI GAR VENTILATIUN. A No. 368,030.v Patented Aug* 9, 1887.A
UNITED STAT-ES PATENT .EEICE JAMES M. WAGGONEE, on BELLS DEPOT, TENNESSEE.
CA R-VENTILATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,030, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed November 4, 18.516. Serial No. 218,016. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerne Be it known that I, JAMES M. WAGGONER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Bells Depot, Crockett county, State of Tennessee, have invented Certain new. and useful Improvements in Fruit-Cars, of which the following is a specication.
My improvements relate to those cars which have for their object the supply of air constantly to all parts of the interior thereof, so that the fruit which may be packed therein for transportation will be kept fresh, and its destruction will thus be largely prevented.
My invention consists in a car-body, comprising the iioor, 1oof,'and the ends, having narrow openings extending across bot-h ends of theV body adjacent to the iioor and roof, respectively, a slatted inner iioor extending from end to end of the car above and contigir ous to the lower openings, and a slatted inner roof extending from end to end of the car beneath and contiguous to the top openings, the spaces between the iioors and roofs forming air-passages extending entirely through the car.
In said drawings, Fign re I is aside elevation ofarailway fruit-car embodying Inyinvention.
l Fig. II is a longitudinal section of the same.
VIV in section.
Fig'. III is an end elevation thereof. Fig. IV is a detail-view of one-corner of the car-body to a larger scale than the preceding views. Fig. V is a detail to a similar enlarged scale, showing the same proportion of the car as Fig. Fig. VI is a perspective view of one section of the slatted iioor or roof.
My improved fruit-car is intended to have a body, l, and trucks 2, of cnstomaryform. In the body, however, I form both at the sides and ends a sufficient number of apertures to permit air to freely enter and pass through and out of the car. These openings are all covered with wire-netting, for the purpose of straining out cinders, and are provided with suitable iron doors, 3, on Vthe interior of the car, so that they may be closed at will. As
4shown in the drawings, the air inlet and exit openings are as follows: one large doorshaped opening, 4, in each side of the car at the center, similar openings, 5 5, also in the sides of the car, similar openings, 6 6, in the center of the ends of the car-body, and elongated openings 7 7 at the top and bottom of such ends extend- A ing the full width of the car, but only about six inches in height. These openings 7 7 are -especially valuable, affording air both above and below the fruit which may be packed in the car, and securing the free escape of air all across the car-body.
To provide for the proper dissemination of the air through the fruit packed in the car, I provide a slatted door, 8, and roof 9. These parts are made in sections, so as to be capable of ready insertion into or removal from the car. They may be entirely taken out when it is desired to use the car for other purposes than that of transporting fruit. The slats are snpported about six inches from the bed of the car-body and from the roof thereof, so that air entering through the long openings 7 7 and passing beneath and above the slats respectively at the bottom and top of the car will be properly disseminated. At the same time a free escape for the air is thus afforded at both the bottom and top of the ear.
To deflect dust, cinders, and rain from the openings 7 7, I vprovide plates 10, hinged at l1 to brackets at the sides ofthe car, and provided with slots l2, to enable them to move without interference with the brake rod or staff. At the ends of plates 10, arms 13 are provided, notched, as shown in Fig. IV, to engage with stops 14, fixed to the sides ofthe car. In this manner the deiiecting-plates 10 may be fixed at any angle desired.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination of a car-body, comprising the iloor, roof, and the ends, having narrow openings 7 extending across both ends of the body adjacent to the floor and roof, respect,
J. M. WAGGONER.
Vitnesses:
CEAS. L. MILLER, ED. H. NEIL.
