Abstract

A smoking device having a mouthpiece attached to a cylindrical member. The cylindrical member includes two chambers with one chamber being located adjacent the mouthpiece. The second chamber is located adjacent the free end of the member and a cigaret receiving compartment is located thereat. Each chamber is communicated separately to ambient and means is provided so that when a person inhales on the mouthpiece air is drawn into the first chamber and through the mouthpiece, and smoke is drawn from a cigaret which is in the cigaret receiving compartment into the second chamber where it is discharged to ambient.

The cylindrical member includes two chambers with one chamber being located adjacent the mouthpiece. The second chamber is located adjacent the free end of the member and a cigaret receiving compartment is located thereat. Each chamber is communicated separately to ambient and means is provided so that when a person inhales on the mouthpiece air is drawn into the first chamber and through the mouthpiece, and smoke is drawn from a cigaret which is in the cigaret receiving compartment into the second chamber where it is discharged to ambient.

Description of the Prior Art It is generally accepted that tobacco smoking can cause serious illnesses and even be the cause of death. This can be seen from medical statistics which show that people who smoke have a greater tendency to have heart trouble and cancer than non-smokers. As a result, many people have attempted to give up smoking, but this is very difficult since tobacco smoking is habit forming. A further reason why it is difficult for many people to give up smoking is that smoking satisfies a desire shared by many people to have something in their mouths and/or hands. Thus, even if a person may be able to reduce his desire for tobacco, he still may find it difficult to give up smoking due to his desire to have something continually in his mouth and/or hand.
There have been numerous prior art attempts to assist people to give up smoking. Some of these attempts have centered on the physiological aspect of smoking and have attempted to reduce the smokers craving for tobacco. However, this did not present a complete solution to the problem, since it did not in any way attempt to satisfy the need that the smoker had to have something in his mouth or hand. It is believed by some people that the proper way for a person to give up smoking is to first lose his physiological need for tobacco and then his need to have something continually in his mouth or hand. The reasoning is that attempting to do both these things at once places too great a stress on a person.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved device to assist a person to give up smoking.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a device for enabling a person to pufi on a cigarette without inhaling any of the smoke therefrom.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a device which can hold a cigarette and which allows a person to puff on the cigarette without inhaling any of the smoke, the device being relatively inexpensive and convenient to use.
Briefly, in accordance with the present invention, the foregoing and other objects are achieved by a smoking device having a mouthpiece and a cylindrical section. The mouthpiece is attached to the cylindrical section, which is divided into two compartments. The first compartment is adjacent the mouthpiece and includes an impeller which is supported on a shaft. The shaft is supported by a ported wall which separates the first compartment from the mouthpiece. Another wall is located between the first and second compartments and includes a circular opening. A squirrel screw fan is secured to the shaft and is fixed for rotation in the second compartment. A ported wall separates the second compartment from the cigarette holding portion of the cylindrical section. The first and second compartments are each separately connected to the ambient.
In normal use a cigarette is secured by the cigarette receiving portion with the mouthpiece in the smokers mouth. When the person inhales, this causes the impeller in the first compartment to rotate and draw air from the ambient into the fist compartment which is directed to the person's lungs. The rotation of the impeller causes the squirrel screw fan to rotate which reduces the pressure in the second compartment and in the cigarette holding section which draws smoke from the cigarette which is discharged to the ambient via the means for connecting the second compartment with the ambient. Thus, it can readily be seen that a device is provided which enables a person to simulate the experience of smoking and have something in his mouth and/or hand while not actually inhaling smoke and impairing his health.
Other objects, aspects and features of the present invention will be apparent in the following description and, in part, will be pointed out hereinafter.
The invention, accordingly, constitutes features of construction, combination of elements and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the cigarette smoking device hereinafter described.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the present invention; and
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary central longitudinal sectional perspective view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the holder per se, thereof.
' DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS In the drawings, and FIG. 1 in particular, an embodiment 10 of the present invention is shown and includes a mouthpiece 12 and a cylindrical section 14. Mouthpiece 12 can be made out of wood or any other material and is conventional and includes a passage 12a. Mouthpiece 12 is secured to the left end of cylindrical section 14 as can be seen in FIG. 3, and this can be done by any conventional technique. Cylindrical section 14 can be made of a pellucid plastic material in order to increase the appeal of the present invention. A wall 16 is in cylindrical section 14 and is located adjacent mouthpiece 12. Wall 16 extends across the cylindrical section and includes a hole 16a which is in alignment with the open end of passage 12a and also includes a central opening. A compartment 18 is located in cylindrical section 14 to the right of wall 16 and is connected to ambient by a port 20 which is located on the periphery of cylindrical section 14. A wall flange 22 extends inwardly from the periphery of cylindrical sec tion 14 at the approximate midsection thereof and defines a central opening 24. Adjacent the rightmost end of cylindrical section 14 is a wall 25 which extends across the cylindrical section and defines a central opening 25a. A compartment 26 is located between walls 22 and 25. Cylindrical section 14 extends past wall 25 and defines a cigarette receiving compartment 28 with a flange 28a extending inwardly therefrom.
An impeller 30 is secured to one end of a shaft 32 so that these elements are rotatable with each other. A portion of shaft 32 is rotatably received within the central opening of walls 16 and 22. A squirrel screw fan 34 has a rotor secured to shaft 32 and is received within compartment 26. Squirrel screw fan 34 is a conventional rotary blower having a cylindrical casing such as that shown in US. Pat. No. 2,996,066. It is noted that the cylindrical casing of the squirrel screw fan is spaced inwardly from cylindrical section 14 as shown in the drawings. Port is in registry with impeller 30 as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. A port 36 is on the periphery of cylindrical section 14 about compartment 26 adjacent fan 34 so as to communicate the compartment with the ambient. As can be seen in the drawings ports 20 and 36 are approximately 90 out of phase with each other. This prevents smoke discharged from port 36 being drawn into port 20.
In use, a cigarette is placed in cigarette receiving compartment 28 and is supported by flange 28a and is lit. The smoker then inhales on mouthpiece l2, drawing air into compartment 18 through port 20 which impinges on impeller 30 causing the impeller and shaft to rotate. The air that causes the impeller to rotate leaves the blades of impeller 16 and via port 16a and passage 12a is directed to the smokers mouth. As a result of shaft 32 rotating, the rotor in squirrel screw fan 34 rotates, creating a reduced pressure in compartment 26. This creates a slight vacuum in compartment 26 drawing smoke from the cigarette which is passed through hole a to compartment 26 and to ambient via port 36. A cigarette can continue to be smoked in this manner and it is readily apparent that the persons utilizing the present invention will never inhale smoke, but only air, and will satisfy a desire to have something continually in the mouth.
By having cylindrical section 14 pellucid a smoker can look thereinto and see how the invention operates, increasing the appeal thereof.
It is thus apparent that a cigaret smoking device is provided which achieves the objects of the invention as well as other objects not specifically herein set forth, and that is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes may be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein described or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described the present invention, there is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent:
l. A smoking device which prevents a smoker from inhaling smoke comprising a generally hollow cylindrical member having first and second ends, a mouthpiece, said mouthpiece being secured to the first end of said member, a first annular flange located at the second end of said member and having a large central opening, a second annular flange having a large central opening located at the second end of said member, the central opening of the first annular flange being sufficiently large so that a mouthpiece of a cigarette may be placed therein, said first and second annular flanges defining between them a cigarette receiving compartment, a first chamber means and second chamber means formed within said member, said first chamber means having a first and second end, a first wall having stszeraassa arsr;masses? was: chamber means, a second wall extending radially inwardly from said member and having a central opening, said second wall defining the second end of said first chamber means, a means providing a first port connecting said first chamber means to atmosphere, said second chamber means being defined by said second wall and said second annular flange, means providing a second port connecting said second chamber means to atmosphere, said first and second ports being approximately ninety degrees out of phase with each other; a shaft journalled for rotation in said first wall and in said central opening of said second wall, a rotary blower having a cylindrical casing secured to said shaft and a rotor in said second chamber means, said cylindrical casing of said rotary blower being radially inwardly spaced from the cylindrical member, said second port being in registry with the cylindrical casing of said rotary blower, an impeller secured to said shaft and rotatable therewith in said first chamber means when the user draws on the mouthpiece said first port being in registry with said impeller.

Claims (1)

1. A smoking device which prevents a smoker from inhaling smoke comprising a generally hollow cylindrical member having first and second ends, a mouthpiece, said mouthpiece being secured to the first end of said member, a first annular flange located at the second end of said member and having a large central opening, a second annular flange having a large central opening located at the second end of said member, the central opening of the first annular flange being sufficiently large so that a mouthpiece of a cigarette may be placed therein, said first and second annular flanges defining between them a cigarette receiving compartment, a first chamber means and second chamber means formed within said member, said first chamber means having a first and second end, a first wall having a through port extending across said member adjacent said mouthpiece and defining the first end of said first chamber means, a second wall extending radially inwardly from said member and having a central opening, said second wall defining the second end of said first chamber means, a means providing a first port connecting said first chamber means to atmosphere, said second chamber means being defined by said second wall and said second annular flange, means providing a second port connecting said second chamber means to atmosphere, said first and second ports being approximately ninety degrees out of phase with each other; a shaft journalled for rotation in said first wall and in said central opening of said second wall, a rotary blower having a cylindrical casing secured to said shaft and a rotor in said second chamber means, said cylindrical casing of said rotary blower being radially inwardly spaced from the cylindrical member, said second port being in registry with the cylindrical casing of said rotary blower, an impeller secured to said shaft and rotatable therewith in said first chamber means when the user draws on the mouthpiece said first port being in registry with said impeller.
