Abstract
A nostril dilator includes a pair of open, generally spherical cages joined together by a flexible chain of inter-locked links, the cages being slightly larger than the nostrils but insertable therein so that the nose holds the cages in place therein.

[56] References Cited 3 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures UNITED STATES PATENTS 264,813 9/1882 Woltge 1 28/260 NOSE DILATOR The present invention generally relates to apparatus for facilitating respiration or breathing and it relates more particularly to means adapted to be inserted into the nostrils of human beings for facilitating normal breathing.
Proper breathing is important to good health in order to keep the blood properly oxygenated. Moreover, it is desirable that the nasal passages be used for inhalation so that the nasal hair and the circular passageways in the nasal function to filter and condition the air before it reaches the lungs. For various reasons such as asthma, bronchitis, heart disease, common colds, and deformation of the nose as while sleeping, the nostrils may become partially or completely closed or blocked. Consequently nasal breathing becomes difficult and mouth inhalation is used either consciously or unconsciously, snoring, dryness of the mouth, and the like result.
An object of the present invention is, therefore, to provide new and improved means for holding the nostrils in a fully open condition thereby to facilitate nasal inhalation, favor a calm sleep, avoid snoring and produce the other benefits associated with normal breathing.
A further object of this invention is to provide devices removably held in the nostrils of the nose and which includes means for connecting such devices together to prevent them from becoming lost should one or both of them fall out.
Preferably, this apparatus should be inserted upon going to bed, but there is no inconvenience due to its configuration and aesthetic quality, for utilizing it at any hour of the day, whether one is sick or by sportsmen during their training and at any other place of time when it is needed.
Further objects and advantages and a better understanding of this invention may be had from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a view of a nostril expander embodying the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to that of FIG. 1 but showing the expander in position in the nose of a human being, the latter being shown in phantom; and
FIG. 3 is'a side view of a human face shown in phantom with the expander of the present invention in place.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a pair of open cage-like frames or nostril dilators 1 and 2 of substantially spherical or ovoid shape, one for each nostril 3. The cages or frames 1 and 2 are slightly larger than the unexpanded nostrils 3 so that they may be placed in the nose by expanding the nostrils and held therein when the nostrils contract to their normal size. The frames 1 and 2 each consist of a series of rings 5- of ovoid or circular shaped manufactured of an antioxivdant material such as stainless steel, silver, plastic or the like. The rings 5 are secured together by welding or by any other suitable method well known in the art.
The frames 1 are linked together by a flexible chain formed of aseries interlocking links 6 constructed of the same non-oxidizable material as the frames 1 and 2, thus facilitating the extraction of the frames 1 and 2 once they have completedtheir purpose. Moreover,
the chain minimizes the chance of losing the frames-1 and 2 should they fall out while the user is sleeping.
be made without departing from the true spirit and the scope of the present invention. It is intended, therefore, to cover all such changes and modifications in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A nostril dilator, comprising a pair of open cages each including a plurality of rings arranged as intersecting great circles of a common spheroid and interconnected at the locations of mutual intersection, and a plurality of loosely interconnected links connected between said cages. 2. A nostril dilator as set forth in claim 1 wherein said links are detachably connected to said cages. 3. A nostril dilator as set forth in claim 2 wherein said cages are ovoid in shape and each cage is formed by three rings.
Claims (3)
