CHARLES J. BECKER, OF KNOXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASH-BOARD APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 871,408, dated October 11, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BECKER, of Knoxville borough, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Board Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of a washtnb, showing in side elevation a washingboard provided with my improved fastening device set in the tub. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the board and clamp. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of Fig. 1, the section being on the line 00 m of that figure. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the adjustable clamp.
Like symbols of reference 1 ndicate like parts.
The object of'my invention is to provide improved means for holding wash-boards in place in the tubs and for enabling them to be adjusted at the desired inclination. The clamp which I use for this purpose is shown in perspective in Fig. 4. It consists of two partsa main body part which is fixed to the tub, and a swiveled adjustable clamp which secures the wash-board to the body part. At
the base of the body part it is forked or provided with two legs, 2, which are preferably roughened on the inside, as at 3. Projecting upward from the top of the legs 2 is a vertical post, 4. The clamp-piece 5 is a forked piece of metal provided at the back with a projecting screw-threaded pivot-stem, 6,which passes through a hole in the post 4. A thumb-nut, 7, is fitted on the stem 6.
Sis athumb-screw, which passes through the side of one of the legs of the clamp 5, and 9 is a similar thumbscrew passing through one of the legs 2.
The application of the device is as follows: As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the legs 2 are set astride the edge of the Wash-board, and one of the legs,10.of the wash-board is put between the legs of the clamp 5. By tightening the screw 9 the legs 2 are held firmly to the tub, and by tightening the screw 8 the washboard is firmly confined within the clamp 5. The washboard and clamp 5 may now be turned on the axis 6 to any desired angle, and may be held there by tightening up the thumbnut 7. The wash-board may be made to rest upon the bottom of the tub by loosening the screw, sliding the waslrboard lengthwise within the clamp 5, and then fixing the screw. In practice I prefer to use two of these clamping devices, as shown in Fig. 3, one being applied to each side of the wash-board. This is not necessary, however, since the washboard may be adjusted and held when only one'is used.
The great simplicity and cheapness of my improvement and the comfort which it affords to women who use it with their wash-boards make it a very valuable improvement.
I claim- 1. A device for'adjustahly holding washboards in tubs, consisting in the combination of the forked body part and the forked clam p 5, swiveled to the body part by a stem, 6,which projects from the back of the clamp, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A device for adj ustably holding washboards in tubs, consisting in the combination ofa forked body part, a forked clamp swiveled thereto, and a nut, 7, for adjustably fixing the clamp to the body part, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of February, A. D. 1887.
, CHARLES J. BECKER.
