Abstract

A spring loaded detachable pad component is carried in a small hand held housing and can be extended for charging with paint. The housing has an angulated guide and a stop against which the bristles of said pad engage thus holding them clear of the guide and preventing paint from being picked up by the guide during use.

These make them difficult for use on window sashes and also when used against rough cast ceilings.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present device overcomes these disadvantages by providing a small trimming device which can be used against window sashes and also can be used against rough cast ceilings.

The principal object and essence of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which includes an inclined guide plate against which the pad is guided, means being provided to hold the edge bristles away from the guide plates so that it does not become fouled with paint.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the pad is easily removed and changed when desired.

A still further object of the invention is to provide means to move the pad away from the housing when picking up paint and then retracting the pad against the housing when the device is to be used thus avoiding contamination of the housing during the paint charging process.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the pad includes a plush surface with inclined bristles along one edge thus assisting in the formation of a clean trim line.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture and otherwise well suited to the purpose for which it is designed.

With the considerations and inventive objects herein set forth in view, and such other or further purposes, advantages or novel features as may become apparent from consideration of this disclosure and specification, the present invention consists of the inventive concept which is comprised, embodied, embraced, or included in the method, process, construction, composition, arrangement or combination of parts, or new use of any of the foregoing, herein exemplified in one or more specific embodiments of such concept, reference being had to the accompanying figures in which: 4

PRELIMINARY DESCRIPTION A paint trimming device collectively designated comprises a housing collectively designated 11 and a pad carrier assembly 12 slideable within the housing. A

pad component 13 is detachably secured to the carrier and the housing includes an inclined guide 14 having a stop 15 against which the bristles 16 of the pad rest during use.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION In detail, the housing 11 consists of a frusto-conical holder made of metal or plastic and having a relatively small upper end 17. A rectangular shroud 17 is screw threadably secured to the lower or larger end 18 of the housing and three sides of the-shroud are provided with down turned flanged edges 19.

The fourth side constitutes the inclined guide plate 14 which inclines downwardly and outwardly from the upper surface 20 of the shroud.

The aforementioned stop 15 extends transversely across this guide plate and upon the inner surface thereof and is spaced upwardly from the lower edge 21 as clearly shown in FIG. 2.

The carrier 12 consists of a spindle 22 bearably engaging through an aperture within the shroud (not illustrated) and being bearably supported at the other end by the apertured narrow or small end 17' of the housing. The upper end23 of the spindle extends above the end 17' of the housing as clearly shown.

A spring 24 surrounds the spindle 22 within the housing and reacts against the top of the shroud 20 and a washer 25 surrounding the spindle and being held in place by means of a cotter pin 26.

From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the carrier is normally held in the uppermost position as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 due to the spring reacting between the housing and the carrier.

.The carrier also includes a substantially rectangular plate 27 secured to the lower end thereof, said plate having a pair of oppositely spaced and parallel inwardly turned side flanges 28 which define slots 29.

The pad 13 consists of a substantially rectangular base having a pair of slots 30 formed in two opposite edges thus permitting engagement of the base with the flanges 28 so that the pad can easily be removed if desired.

The front edge 31 of the base is inclined upwardly and downwardly at an angle similar to the inclination of the guide 14 and a relatively thin row of bristles 32 are secured to the underside of the base and incline outwardly and downwardly at an angle similar to the angle of inclination of the edge 31.

The remainder of the underside of the base is covered with a plush material 34 and this plush material extends over the other three sides of the base with the edges 35 of the line of bristles extending over the edge of the plush material as shown in FIG. 4.

In operation, the pad is secured to the carrier plate 27 and the spindle 23 is pushed downwardly relative to the housing thus ejecting the carrier as shown in FIG. 2. This enables the pad to be dipped in a shallow tray of paint without fouling the guide 14.

The carrier is then released thus permitting the spring 24 to move the carrier upwardly in the position shown in FIG. 3. The transverse stop 15 prevents the bristles from bending or contacting the guiding edge during use, it being understood that the bristles are em- =ployed under slight pressure.

This prevents paint from being picked up by the guides during the painting process. The guide enables accurate trim painting to be undertaken and the bristles overlapping the plush at the end, enable the guide to be used into extremely sharp comers thus eliminating any gapping, a fault normally associated in conventional trimming devices.

As mentioned before, the pad is easily removed from the carrier for cleaning or replacement purposes.

Various modifications can be made within the scope of the inventive concept which is herein disclosed and/or claimed.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. A- paint trimming device comprising in combination a housing, a pad carrier mounted in said housing for selective endwise movement therein, and a pad assembly detachably securable to said carrier, said pad assembly including an attaching base, a resilient painting surface on one side of said base and a transverse guide plate on the end of said housing adjacent said pad assembly, said pad assembly including one inclined edge, said guide plate also being inclined, and means on said guide plate maintaining said inclined edge of said pad assembly spaced from said guide plate, said carrier including a spindle passing through said housing, a substantially rectangular carrier plateon one .end of said spindle engageable with said attachingbase', spring means in said housing reacting between said housing and said carrier normally biassing said carrier into engagement with said housing, said spindle extending beyond the other end of said housing whereby said carrier can be moved away from said one end of said housing by pressure on said spindle against the pressure of said spring means.

2. The device according to claim 1 in which said carrier plate includes a pair of spaced and parallel intumed flanges defining retainer slots, said base of said pad assembly including a pair of spaced and parallel side edges slideably engageable within said slots.

The device according to claim 1 in which said pad assembly includes a row of bristles extending from said inclined edge and at the same angle thereof, said resilient surface of said pad assembly being formed from a plush material, said material extending around the side edges of said pad assembly base with the exception of said inclined edge, said bristles overlying the ends of said plush material.

4. The device according to claim 2 in which said pad assembly includes a row of bristles extending from said inclined edge and at the same angle thereof, said resilient surface of said pad assembly being formed from a plush material, ,said material extending around the side edges of said pad assembly'base with the exception of said inclined edge, said bristles overlying the ends of said plush material.

Claims

1. A paint trimming device comprising in combination a housing, a pad carrier mounted in said housing for selective endwise movement therein, and a pad assembly detachably securable to said carrier, said pad assembly including an attaching base, a resilient painting surface on one side of said base and a transverse guide plaTe on the end of said housing adjacent said pad assembly, said pad assembly including one inclined edge, said guide plate also being inclined, and means on said guide plate maintaining said inclined edge of said pad assembly spaced from said guide plate, said carrier including a spindle passing through said housing, a substantially rectangular carrier plate on one end of said spindle engageable with said attaching base, spring means in said housing reacting between said housing and said carrier normally biassing said carrier into engagement with said housing, said spindle extending beyond the other end of said housing whereby said carrier can be moved away from said one end of said housing by pressure on said spindle against the pressure of said spring means.

2. The device according to claim 1 in which said carrier plate includes a pair of spaced and parallel inturned flanges defining retainer slots, said base of said pad assembly including a pair of spaced and parallel side edges slideably engageable within said slots.

4. The device according to claim 2 in which said pad assembly includes a row of bristles extending from said inclined edge and at the same angle thereof, said resilient surface of said pad assembly being formed from a plush material, said material extending around the side edges of said pad assembly base with the exception of said inclined edge, said bristles overlying the ends of said plush material.
