ATTORNEY Patelited' April 24, 1973 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 JNVE/UTOJ? WILLIAM B. MARCELL UNWIND SUPPORT FOR COILED WIRE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Unwinding of coiled electric wires presented for a long time considerable problem to electricians and other workers using such wire from a coil because the comparatively stiff electrical wires twist and form kinks and knots which render the unwinding of a length of wire difficult.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a portable support on which the coiled wire can be easily deposited and which can be hung in such a manner that the entire support revolves when tangential pull is exerted for unwinding a length of wire from the coil.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the unwind support hung from a rafter.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the unwind support in wire carrying position.
FIG. 3 isa developed view of an adaptation of the unwind support for transportation in a box-like cover.
FIG. 4 is an assembled view of the modified form in a box-like cover.
FIG. 5 is a modified form showing the hanging of several unwind supports in tandem.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION A support plate 1, in the herein illustration in the form of a circular disk, made of stiff material, has a plurality of flexible suspending lines 2. In the present illustration the lines 2 are made of suitable cord or rope. Each line 2 is tied to a shoulder eyebolt 3 fixed to the plate. The shoulder eyebolts 3 are arranged symmetrically around and outward from the center of the base plate 1 and are so located that the lines 2 suspend the base plate 1 and the load thereon substantially balanced thereby to prevent the tipping or tilting of the base plate 1. The lines 2 converge upwardly and are tied together at and connected to a suitable swivel clip 4. A hanger 6 has a swivel ring 7 at its lower end and the swivel clip 4 is clipped into the swivel ring 7. The hanger 6 has a hook 8 or similar device on its free end for hooking over or hanging on a pipe or rafter or other support on a ceiling. The coil of electrical wire 9 is placed on the base platel. There are several holes 11 provided near the outer periphery of the base plate 1 to 1 permit the hooking of the outside free end of the coiled wire 9 in one of said holes 11 when the coil is unwound from the inside end. A plurality of holes 12 are provided inwardly of the shoulder eyebolts 3 for hooking the inner end of the coiled wire in one of the holes 12 when the coil is unwound from its outer end. A plurality of elongated slots 13 are provided along the outer periphery of the base plate I forming carrying handles as shown in FIG. 2. The swivel clip 4 is adapted to be clipped over the edge of one of the slots 13 in the manner shown in FIG. 2 so as to utilize the lines 2 for holding the coiled wire 9 on the base plate 1 during transportation in the vertical attitude shown in FIG. 2.
In the modified form shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the structure of the support is substantially the same as heretofore described but a carton or box top 16 is placed over the base plate 1 and the collapsed lines 2 and the coiled wire 9 while the swivel clip 4 is engaged with one of the elongated slots 13 to hold the coiled wire 9 on the base plate 1. Then a securing strip such as an adhesive securing strip 17 is placed around the edge of the box and the periphery of the base plate to hold them together. A suitable handle 18 may be provided on the underside of the base plate 11, as shown in FIG. 4, to facilitate the carrying of the boxed unit. In this form as soon as the securing strip 17 is detached the carton 16 can be removed and the packaged unit is ready for hanging and use.
In the form illustrated in FIG. 5 the base plate 1 is provided with suitable eyebolts 21 from which extend a plurality of lines 22 converging toward a swivel ring 23 tied together in the usual manner and a second unit similar to the first may be clamped into the swivel ring 23 to suspend a lower unit 24. In this manner several coils of wire can be supported on the same hook in tandem to facilitate operations.
A central eyebolt 26 is extended from the middle of the plate 1 to accommodate a weight as may be needed in some cases for stabilizing the suspension unit in operation. Another central eyebolt 27 extends upward from the center of the base plate and may be used in some instances to tie off the coiled wire by suitably wrapping the lines 2 around the coiled wire and attaching it to the central eyebolt 27.
The invention is simple in construction and inexpensive. It is easily handled by the average workman and it is eminently adapted for its purposes.
I claim:
