UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEQRGE G. CAMPBELL, OF MILWVAUKEE, \VISGONSIN.
CATCH-BASIN oovea.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,393, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed March 14. 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
ISeit known that I, GEORGE G. CAMPBELL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Catch-Basin Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters orfigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements on the catch-basin cover for which I obtained United States Patent No. 204,882 on June 18, 1878.
The object of my improvements is to provide a cover so constructed as to be adjustable in height, whereby the cover is adapted for use in connection with curbing of different heights.-
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a single catchbasin cover of the form used at the corner of the curbing at streetcrossings. Fig. 2 is a cover with a straight face adapted to be used with straight curbing, which cover has also an extension or double cover top. Fig. 3 is also a cover with a straight face and with two extensions of the double cover top. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the cover shown in Fig. 3 on line 00 mthereof. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a modified form of cover. 7
The same letters refer to like parts in all the views.
The catch-basin cover is constructed ofcastiron, and the main part A is castin one piece, the man-hole cover B being cast separately. The inner top edge, 0, of the cover is, for convenience of construction and for strength and neatness of appearance, curved, while the top outer edge is made to conform with and form a part of the line of the curbings, being for a corner basin constructed with an angle, D, as shown in Fig. 1, and fora straight curbing is constructed with a straight edge, E, as shown in. Figs. 2 and 3. The guards F F project outwardly, downwardly, and obliquely, forming a curved guard'line,G,at their lower ends.
It frequently occurs that the curbing H of the street is so high as to extend above a cover made as shown in Fig. 1 when prop- Serial No. 230.817. (No model.)
erly set with reference to the surface of the ground for taking the surface-water therefrom, and to provide for obviating that objectionable feature and to provide a comparatively inexpensive extension upward of the top of the cover, whereby the surface of the top of the cover can be madeflush with the top of the curbing H, I use one or more sections or double covers, I I, with flanges or sides K K, of greater or less heights, as required, these sections being of the same size and form as the top of the cover proper, A. These extensionsections of cover I I are also made of cast-iron, and one, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, or more, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4t,fn1ay be used, as required, to bring the top surface of the cover flush withthe top of the curbing. The top surface of the main cover A and of each of the intermediate covers or sections is provided with lugs or guards L L integral therewith, adapted to receive against them the inner sur face of the sides K K at their lower edges and hold the sections I I in place against slipping or moving thereon. The extension-section is bolted at M M to the main or bottom cover,A. These extensionsections may be made of different thicknesses, so as to be adapted for use with curbing of varying heights.
If it be desired to construct mason-work about and above the main cover, the extension-section I can be made in the form shown, Fig. 5that is to say, with its side walls, K
K, close about the man-hole, the top flange or cover being turned outwardly to receive the bolts M M.
IVhat I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In catch-basin covers, an extension top section or cover, I, supported on the main cover A, substantially as described.
2. In catch-basin covers, a main cover, A, provided with guards L L, and an extensioncover, I, placed and supported on the main cover A, and secured thereto by bolts or equivalent means, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE G. CAMPBELL.
