'GLOVE 0R MITTBN.
Patented Deo. 13
No. 374,676. Y
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.: y
SIMON HELFAEB, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
GLOVE OR M ITTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No- 374,676, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed November 4, 1886. SeriaINo. 217,966. (No model.)
.To aZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON HELEAER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves or Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to' gloves or mittens, and is designed as an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent of the lUnited States were issued to me July 7, 1885, No. 321,497.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are perspective views of my improved mitten; Fig.
3, a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 4,
erably woven, material, and B represents a strengthening strip extending across the knuckle portion, as in my patent above referred to. It is found in practice that this one strip is not sufficient to prevent the mitten from being distended laterally at the wrist portion, or to prevent the elongation 0f the mitten by constant pulling on and oft'. To overcome this I provide the glove or initten with a strengthening-strip, O, near the wrist portion, the two strips B and C being connected at their ends by similar strips, D, which are designed to prevent the elongation of the mitten.
The strips B, C, and D may be made of any suitable material which will Lprevent the material of which the glove is made from stretching, and may be secured to the glove in any desired manner, but preferably by stitching. The parts B C D may be made separately and secured to the mitten; or they may all be cut out of a single piece of material, as found desirable. The strip O is quite broad, but is secured to the glove at its sides and at its lower edge, the upper edge being left free. This construction'forms a pocket, E, into which is placed, when not in use, the removable external covering, F, the covering being shown folded and inserted into the pocket in Fig. 3.
A button, a, or similar fastening is secured to the glove or to the portion G,- by which,
when the pocket is filled, the pocket is closed. This pocket may be used for the purposes hereinbefore described; or it may be used for change, bills, te.
A strap, G, provided with a buckle, H, or other fastening, passes around the glove near y its upper or wrist portion, and is secured thereto at two points, preferably at the sides, as shown, and it will of course be seen that as the strap is tightened it binds the gauntlet or wrist-extension of the glove about the wrist and prevents the entrance of cold.
These gloves or mittens, being designed more especially for teamsters, thel drivers of public vehicles, and the like, who are exposed to storms of snow and rain, are liable to become saturated with moisture, in which case they are rendered very cold and disagreeable to the hand. In order to prevent this I provide a separate water-proof covering, F, adapt/ed to pass over and'fit upon the exterior of the glove, this covering being shown in Fig. 4. It may be constructed of rubber, oiled silk, or of any .other suitable water-proof material, and in its edge is in serted a gathering (preferably elastic) band, I, which is provided with a tag, J.
When the external covering is applied to the glove, as shown in Fig. 5, the elastic cord or band I is passed partly around the wrist and engages with a button secured upon the back of the cover. By this means the covering is securely held in place upon the glove.
When not in use, it is folded up and placed in the pocket E, as shown in Fig. 3, and pre- 85 vented from falling therefrom by means of the button or other fastening.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a glove with a pocket, and 'of course make no broad claim to such a construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A glove or mitten provided on its exterior with a transverse strip, B, across the knuckle portion and a transverse strip, O, across the wrist p0rtion,as and for thepurpose set forth.
2. A glove or mitten provided with a strengthening-strip, B, .across the knuckle portion, a similar strip, C, across the wrist 1ro -A, a Water-proof covering adapted to be apxo plied thereto or detached therefrom, said covering being provided With a gathering-band in its edge and with a button on its back, substantially as described and shown.
SIMON HELFAER.
portion, and strips D D, connecting the strips B and C, substantially as described and shown.
3. In combination with a glove, a waterproof covering, as F, adapted to be applied 5 to or removed from the glove at will, and provided with a fastening at the Wrist portion by Whchit may be secured in position upon the Witnesses: glove, al1 substantially as shown. A. A. L. SMITH, 4. In combination with a glove or mitten, CEAS. E. WILD.
