JOHN M. HAYNES, OF MAXWELL, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,155, dated December 20, 1887.
(No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. HAYNES, of Maxwell, in the county of Golusa and State of California, have invented a new and Improved \Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved wrench specially adapted for gas-pipes and designed to fit all sizes of pipes.
The invention consists of a lever on one end of which is fulcrumed a gripping-jaw having a segmental toothed edge, and of' ga chain secured by one end to said lever and adapted to be hooked by one of its links over the free end of the gripping-jaw.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the grippingaw.
On one end of the lever A is fulerumed the gripping-jaw B, having a segmental edge on which are formed teeth 0, and said grippingjaw is also provided on its outer free end with inwardly-curved prongs or hooks D, between which can be held. a link of a chain, E, carrying onone end a swivel, F, held to turn in a projection, G, secured to the top edge of the lever A.
The operation is as follows: In order to apply my improved wrench on a gaspipe, I place the teeth 0 of the curved jaw B against said gas-pipe H, and then pass the chain E before being hooked, by its link, on the free I end of the gripping-jaw B, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The operator now presses the lever A downward in the direction of the arrow at, the lever A swinging from its fulcrum on the gripping-jaw B, which is held tightly against the gas-pipe H by its teeth 0, and is drawn still tighter against said gas-pipe H by the chain E, which, on account of being connected by its swivel F with said lever A, is drawn very taut on the downward movement of said lever A, so that the teeth 0 of the grippingjaw B cause the pipe H to turn on the farther downward movement of the lever A.
It will be seen that a pipe of any ordinary size can be operated on by my improvement, as said chain E can be hooked by one of its links to the rear end of the gripping-jaw B, so as to correspond to the respective size of the pipe, thus increasing or diminishing the length of the chain from its swivel end F to the free end of the gripping-jaw B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a wrencl1,the combination, with alever, of a gripping-jaw fulcrumed on one end of said lever, and of a chain secured to said lever by one end and adapted to be hooked by one of its links on the free end of said grippingjaw, said jaw being disposed to act directly in alignment with the lever, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wrench, the combination, with a lever, of a grippingjaw l'ulcrumed on one end of said lever, and having a segmental edge provided with teeth, a hook formed on the free end of said gripping-jaw, and a chain havingaswivel on one end fastened to said lever, said chain being adapted to be hooked by one of its links on said gripping-jaw, substantially as shown and described.
JOHN M. HAYNES.
