WOOD SORE W.
No. 375,907. Patented Jan. 3, 1888.
ME I UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
CHARLES M. VVHITMOIi-E, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
WOOD-SCREW.
SPECIFICATION Application filed July 28, 1887. Serial No. 245,513. (No madel.)
1 0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES M. WHITMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vood-Screws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in woodscrews; and it consists of a screw provided with a right-hand thread upon the one end and a left-hand thread upon the opposite end, and means for turning or operating the same, the detailed construction of which will be more particularly hereinafter referred to.
The object of this invention is to provide at once a simple, cheap, effective, and durable device for securing moldings, the joints of frames, and the like.
Heretofore moldings were secured by passing the ordinary wood-screws through them from the front side, and, as is well known, defaced the moldings or left the head prominent or projecting, either of which is objectionable; but with my improved screw these objectionable features are obviated, since when properly applied it is invisible.
In the drawings, Figure 1. is a view in perspective of a right and left hand screw of my construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are views in section of a frame and molding, respectively, showing the manner of applying the right and left hand screw.
Fig.1 represents a right and left hand screw provided near its center with two squares for the purpose of turning the same, the sides of one being formed at an angle of forty-five degrees to the sides of the other, as willbe readily understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. By this construction I obtain the advantages of an octagon, with a greater bearing for the wrench. It is also on vions that it is possible to operate the screw by the means of one square singly, or the screw may be perforated near its center and a pin or lever substituted for the wrench; but I prefer the former, as it admits of greater adjustment.
I am aware that it is not new to useadouble screw having a like thread formed upon each end. Therefore I disclaim that; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed wood-screw having a right-hand thread formed upon one end and a left-hand thread formed on the opposite end, and provided near its center with means for rotating the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES M. WHITMORE.
