MAVIS BY WM ATTORNEY PATENTEU "BY 13 1973 METHOD OF MAKING A TEXTILE FABRIC A well known method of producing a decorative textile fabric having a quilted design in relief involves the stitching together of two layers of cloth along the outline of a design on one layer. The bottom layer openings are then cut in the bottom layer within each of the design areas outlined by the stitching and a suitable padding material such as cotton wadding or the like is inserted through the openings between the two layers. While such a well known technique raises the design in relief in the padded areas to produce a pleasing outer appearance, such a technique is complicated and expensive requiring the use of highly skilled labor. Furthermore, it can be easily understood that the insertion of the padded material at best does not produce the desired degree of uniformity in the resulting fabric so that the finished fabric is characterized by some unevenness. Furthermore, the requirement that the severed openings in the bottom layer be resewn is not only a difficult and time consuming operation but further adds to the unevenness of the resulting product.
Accordingly, a primary object of this invention is to provide a new and novel method of making a textile fabric.
Another object of this invention is to provide a new and novel method of making a textile fabric having a design which is in relief.
A further object of this invention is to provide a new and novel method of making a textile fabric having a quilted design which may be formed in a minimum of steps, which is inexpensive and simple to perform and which presents an unusually attractive outer appearance and which provides a fabric having quilted designed portions characterized by an unusually uniform degree of smoothness.
This invention further contemplates the provision of a new and novel method of making a textile fabric which may utilize any type of textile design, which permits the fabric portions definqd by the design to be quilted in a simple and easy manner, which provides a sculptured fabric adapted for a wide variety of uses and which permits the application of additional decorative effects to provide a highly attractive fabric.
Other objects and advantages 'of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
The objects of the invention and other related objects are accomplished by the provision of a first ply of textile sheet material having a surface provided with a plurality of artistic representations forming a textile design. A second ply of filling material in the form of a sheet and a third ply of textile material are provided and all of the plies are positioned in overlying relationship with the second ply sandwiched between the first and third plies. All of the plies are stitched to-gether along the marginal edges of at least some of the artistic representations and the portions of the second and third plies between the stitched marginal edges are removed to form a textile fabric having the areas defined by the stitched artistic representations in relief.
The novel features which are believed to be characteristic of the invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and method of operation may be best understood by reference to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the portions of the assembled materials utilized in the practice of the novel method of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side view of the assembled materials of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1 showing the assembled materials in an intermediate stage of carrying out the novel method of the invention;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along line 4-4 in FlG. 3 in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4 showing a further step in the novel method of the invention;
FIG. 6 is a perpective view ofa portion of the finished textile fabric of the invention; and
FIG. 7 is a plan view of a portion of the fabric of the invention in a modified form.
Referring now to the drawings and to FIG. 1 in particular, there is shown the materials utilized in the novel method of the invention. More specifically, these materials include a first ply ll of textile sheet material which may be of any suitable woven fabric or the like. The first ply 11 has a surface 11a which is provided with a plurality of artistic representations 12, 13 of any decorative form such as flowers, figures, etc. forming a textile design designated generally by the letter D. In the preferred embodiment, the textile design D may be printed in the conventional manner on the surface 11a but it should be understood that any suitable technique may be used to form the design D. The artistic represntations 12, 13 are outlined by the marginal edges 12a,

The materials of FIG. 1 also include a second ply 16 of textile material which comprises a soft mass or sheet of short loose fibers forming a padding or quilting material such as cotton, polyester or the like. A third ply 17 of textile material is also provided which may be referred to as a backing material and may be any suitable thin, lightweight woven material such as batiste or the like.
In carrying out the method of the invention, the three plies 1 l, 16 and 17 are positioned in overlying relationship with the second ply 16 of filling material sandwiched between the first and third plies 11, 17 as shown. All of the plies, in the overlying relationship of FIG. 1, are then stitched together using a colored yarn or the like along the marginal edges 12a, as shown best in FIGS. 3, 4. It should be understood, that it may not be necessary to provide such stitching for all of the artistic representations but at least some of these artistic representations such as the representations 12, 13 are stitched.
The stitching of the ply may be accomplished in any conventioanl manner using yarn, thread or the like such stitching being identified in FIGS. 3, 4 by the letter S.
After the stitching operation, portions of the second and third plies 16, 17 between the marginal edges 12a, 13a are removed to form a textile fabric having the area defined by the stitched artistic representations in relief, this textile fabric being identified in FIG. 6 by the letter F. More specifically and referring now to FIG. 5, the removal of these portions of the plies 16, 17 is shown being carried out by a cutting or severing operation. 2. A method in accordance with claim 1 of making a textile fabric including the step of securing a plurality of shaped elements to said surface of said first ply in the areas defined by said artistic representations.
3. A method of making a textile fabric in accordance with claim 1 wherein said removing step is performed by severing said second and third plies adjacent said stitching.
4. A method of making a textile fabric in accordance with claim 1 wherein said stitching step comprises stitching said plies together with a colored yarn.
Claims (4)
1. A method of making a textile fabric comprising the steps of, providing a first ply of textile sheet material, having a surface provided with a plurality of artistic representations forming a textile design, providing a second ply of sheet Filling material, providing a third ply of textile material, positioning all of said plies in overlying relationship with said said second ply sandwiched between said first and third plies, stitching all of said plies together along the marginal edges of at least some of said artistic representations, and removing the portions of said second and third plies between said stitched marginal edges to form a textile fabric having the areas defined by said stitched artistic representations in relief.
2. A method in accordance with claim 1 of making a textile fabric including the step of securing a plurality of shaped elements to said surface of said first ply in the areas defined by said artistic representations.
3. A method of making a textile fabric in accordance with claim 1 wherein said removing step is performed by severing said second and third plies adjacent said stitching.
4. A method of making a textile fabric in accordance with claim 1 wherein said stitching step comprises stitching said plies together with a colored yarn.
