JOHN ROBERT DAVIS, OF WAKEFIELD STATION, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO O. E. CARTER, OF APPOMATTOX COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
BALETl.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,874, dated March 6, 188e.
Application tiled August 13, 1887.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, JOHN ROBERT DAvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wakefield Station, in the county of Sussex and State of Virginia, have inventedwcertain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a bale-tie coupling which may be easily from metal, and less liable to get out of order. Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a plan view of gether; Fig. 2, a median longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 3, a perspective detail view of the male part of my coupling, and Fig. 4 a similar View of the female part.
In the drawings, A represents the male and B the female part of the bale-tiecoupling, the former having the back a, which carries on the inside the projection a', with its tongues a2 a3. The part A is also provided with the crossslot a4, and the part B with the cross-slot b4, to receive the ends of the-bale-band, while part A has a sloping shoulder, as, in front of the tongue a, up which the end b5 of part B is pushed in order to unlock the coupling. The
Serial No. 246,866. (No modelJ' part B has a cavity, b', to receive the projec- 3 5 tion a', the overhanging shelf b, to receive thereunder the tongue a2, and a sloping shelf,
b3, on Which the tongue a3 finds a bearing.
In order to lock my coupling A B, the part A is pushed upon the part B, so that the tongue 4o a2 will slide upon the shelf 'b2 and until the edge of the shelf b3 passes the front edge ofthe tongue a?, when the front edge, b5, of the part B drops behind the sloping shoulder a5 of part A. The operator now lets go the coupling A 45 B,when the pressure of the baled cotton, hay, or other material automatically locks the parts and keeps them securely fastened together.
In order to unlock the parts A B, it is only necessary to push the part B on the part A 5o and press on its rear end, when the bale-tie will be uncoupled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
A bale-tie consisting of the male and female parts A B, having crossslots ai b, the part A having the back a, carrying the inside projection, a', provided with tongues a* a3, and the part B having the cavity b' and shelves b2 b3, 6o
as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix myslgnature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ROBERT DAVIS.
