i1 NITED *rares JOSEPH `W. SAUER, OF MILWAUKEE, VISCONSIN.
BALLECATCHERS GLOVE..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,728, dated July l0, 18188.
Application filed March 1, 1888. Serial No. 265,832.
To all 10.700711, t may concern:
Beit known that l, Josera W. SAUER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of .Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ball-Catcliers Gloves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot said invention, reference being had to the accom' panying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of' this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gloves for base-ball catchers, and pertains to the peculiar construction and arrangement ot' the seams of the `glove, and also to the construction and arrangement of the padding of the glove, of the interior and exterior of Athe inner part of'the hand of the glove, and the construction and arrangement of the padding on the inner part and around the ends of the fingers of' the glove, as hereinafter described.
My invention is explained by reference to the accoml'ianying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front View of the glove, and Fig. 2 represents the back of the glove shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 represenls a longitudinal sect-ion through the hand and one of the fingers ofthe giovedi-avvii on line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section through the hand of the glove, drawn on line Y Yof' Fig. l. Fig. 5 representsaeross section of one of the iingers ofthe glove.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
In gloves as ordinarily constructed it is common to form the seams upon the interior surface ofthe glove. ly my improvement the seams A A upon the respective sides of the fingers and the seams B B upon the respective sides of the hands are preferably formed upon the outside of the glove, whereby the glove is more flexible and the interior surface is smoother than is otherwise the case when the seam is Vformed upon the interior of the glove. Vhen the body C of the glove is completed, a piece of heavy chinchilla cloth, D, is rst placed upon the inside of the glove between the wrist and the ngers, when the same is covered by a piece of soft exible doeskin or similar material, E, which also extends from the wrist to the joints of the fingers upon the inside of the glove. I then place two layers (No model.)
of heavy chinchilla cloth, F and G, upon the outside ofthe glove C, which forms an exterior padding to the hand of the glove, over which is a covering of bnckskin or other fexible material, H, which extends from the wrist to the joints of the fingers upon the inside of the hand, as indicated in Figs, land 3. The exterior coverings to the paddings E and H, when secured in place around their edges, are preferably stitched together by :a series of stitches; a a, in the ordinary manner. The inner surface of t-he fingers of the glove are also provided with a padding consisting oftwo layers of chinchilla cloth, I and J, upon which is an exterior covering, K,v\'liich padding and covering extend from the joints of the fingers to and around the ends oi' the fingers and back a slight distance upon the exterior of the ends ofthe fingers, terminating at b, which represenis the stitches by which the covering is secured to the cloth. The padding I and J terminates at d, and is iu no way connected with the padding of the hand, but is formed in separate and independent pieces from the padding upon the hand of the glove, whereby the joints of the fingers are more flexible than they would otherwise be if the padding of the hand and Vfingers were formed iu asi ngle piece, as the lingers may be readily bent without bending the padding. The back of the glove is left open at L, so that the glove will not come in contact with the knuckle-joints of the hand of the wearer, and the glove is thereby rendered more dexible. 'The exterior covering, H, of the hand and the covering K ofthe lingers are secured together above the padding by the seam M. It is obvious that by thus` securing the padding around the ends of the fingers and thumb of the glove, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it forms a cushion to the ends` ofthe fingers, which prevents them from being injured by contact with the ball, and they also protect the seam A ofthe glove when the glove is brought in contact with the ground, as is frequently thecase when attempting to stop a rolling ball.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a ball-catchers glove, the combination of the body oi" the glove C, having an opening, L, in the back of the hand thereof, interior padding,l)`,and retaining-cover E, one or more exterior layers of padding, F and G, and eXteA rior Covering, H, extending from the Wrist to the iingers upon tbeinside of the hand ofthe glove, and secured thereto by a series of stitches, one or more exteriorlayers offinger-padding,Iand J, and covering K, extending from the joints of the iingers upon the inside of the hand to and over the ends of the fingers, and stitched to the back of the fingers of the glove, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ofthe bodyT of the glove '0, having opening L upon the back side thereof, and having side seams A around the fingers and side seams B around the hand, turned out-Ward orforined upon the exterior ofthe glove, in combination with the interior padding, D, and covering E, located upon the inside ofthe hand of the glove, and exterior padding F and and covering' H, extending from the wrist to the hand of the glove, and exterior padding I and J and covering K, located upon the inside of the lingers of the iglove, said finger padding and cover and said band padding and Covering respectively terminating and forming a flexible joint at the roots ofthe fingers of the glove, said padding I and J and covering K being secured around the inner surface and over the ends of the ngers of the glove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony Whereofl afx my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
JOSEPH `W. SAUER.
