FIG.4
HEAD ORNAMENT FOR WEARING OVER THE HAIR BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Ornamentation of the head by means of articles such as combs, holders for flowers, or band-like members securing the hair in place, has long been practiced. However, various disadvantages, which it is a purpose of the present invention to overcome, have frequently been associated with ornamentation structure which has to grip the head. For example, the ornament should be adaptable to use with or without the wearing of wigs, and to wearing with a variety ofhair styles including the popular French Twist style.
Moreover, it has been found that when the ornament does not nestle into the hair in an attractive manner a sense of artificiality may be noted by the observer. Conforming to requirements of this nature requires a particular construction of a head ornament differing from the construction of ornaments with which I am familiar.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A head ornament which is worn in overlying relation to the hair or a wig comprises a resilient arcuate first member engaging the head and providing the basic support. This member normally is worn in a rearwardly in clined manner with its ends terminating near the ears, and has hingedly connected thereto a rearwardly extending second arcuate member whose rear end terminates near the nape of the neck. The second member includes a web portion which nestles into the hair and which may easily be pinned to the hair in order to secure the member against inadvertant shifting to one side or rising from its selected grooming position. Both members are covered with ornamentation which in connection with the hair serve to hide the structure of the two members.
Among the objects of the invention are the provision of an improved head ornament which is comfortable to wear and which can be readily put on or removed; the provision of a head ornament having a hinged rearwardly extending portion which does not shift laterally after being arranged in place; the provision of a head ornament supporting decoration which serves to hide the mechanical structure of the ornament; and the provision of a head ornament adapted for wear with a large variety of hair styling.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds and when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a perspective view indicating the manner of wearing of the ornament on the head.
FIG. 2 is a plan view indicating the relative proportions of the members supporting the ornamentation and as viewed from above the wearers head.
FIG. 3 is a developed view showing the interior of the members with ornamentation removed therefrom.
FIG. 4 is a rear elevation view of the first arcuate member, and
FIG. 5 is a side elevation view of the second arcuate member.
Referring now to FIGS. 3 to 5, a conventional hair retaining arcuate member 10, which may be formed of a plastic material with a memory effect, is provided along its rearward upper edge with a pair of symmetrically spaced hinge plates ll, 12. These platesas well as the entire exposed upper surface of the member 10 are covered with ornamentation, such as artificial flowers or the like 13, which extend from the right hand end 14 to the left hand end 15 of that member.
The resilience of the member 10 causes the member to fit snugly and comfortably upon the head and the unrestricted hair 16 (FIGS. 1 and 2) therefore hides the edges of the member from the side while the ornamentation hides the member from above show, thereby diminishing the effect of artificiality to a viewer. Preferably, the member 10 is worn in a rearwardly slanting position (FIG. 1) and may employ conventional knobs 17 on its inner surface to assist in its retention in place.
As a significant feature, an arcuate rearwardly extending second member indicated generally at 20 is provided and may comprise a structure including an endless metallic wire 21, for example about 1/32 inch diameter, extending from a narrow rearward end 22 to a wider forward end and bent in arcuate side elevation form. At this forward end the wire is bent centrally with a reverse curvature at 23 and at its two forwardly projecting nodes has affixed thereto a pair of hinge plates 24, 25 or equivalent members. These plates are detachably affixed by suitable pins or other means to the respective hinge plates of the first arcuate member 10. A perforate web 26 of flexible material such as lace covers the underside of the second member and serves the dual purpose of receiving hair pins during the affixing of the ornament and of aiding in ventilation during the wearing of the same.
The entire second member is covered with ornamentation 27 which may be similar to the ornamentation 13, and which as seen in FIG. 5 extends below and around the end 22 of the wire thus to cover the second member at the nape ofthe neck.
When donning the ornament, the user first fits the member 10 in selected position with the second member 20 pivoted upwardly and thereafter lowers the second member and by means of a pin 28 engaging both the hair and the web 26 secures the ornament in place. Removal of the ornament may be done in reverse sequence. As will be understood, during this emplacement the un-styled hair can be gathered to enter under the lace web thus to situate the ornament over and on to the hair. Moreover, the hair can be permitted to enter under the lace web as well as to be styled around either or both of the arcuate members thus to nestle the mechanical structure of the ornament into the hair.
The engagement of the two pairs of hinge plates,
which are spaced transversely of the head, resists any tendency of the wire 21 to shift laterally, and thus the member 20 with its supported ornamentation is not blown or brushed into an askew position or raised position after the web 26 is pinned to the hair.
Having thus described and illustrated a preferred form of my invention, it will be appreciated that the invention may, of course, also be embodied in other forms within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An ornament adapted for wear upon the head in overlying relation to the hair and comprising, a resilient arcuate first'member with ends terminating adjacent the ears of the head of the wearer, a rearwardly extending laterally secured arcuate second member affixed by hinges at its forward end to said first member centrally thereof adjacent the top of the head and with its rearupon said wire and into which a pin may be inserted for holding said second member in nestled relation to the hair.
3. An ornament as defined in claim 1 wherein said second arcuate member comprises a pair of spaced hinge members at its wider portion and said first arcuate member comprises a pair of hinge members engaging with the respective hinge members of said second arcuate member.

Claims (3)

1. An ornament adapted for wear upon the head in overlying relation to the hair and comprising, a resilient arcuate first member with ends terminating adjacent the ears of the head of the wearer, a rearwardly extending laterally secured arcuate second member affixed by hinges at its forward end to said first member centrally thereof adjacent the top of the head and with its rearward end terminating adjacent the nape of the neck, said second member comprising a wire shaped to rest upon the top and back of the head and extending from a narrow portion at the nape of the neck to a wider portion at its juncture with said first member, and ornamentation affixed to each of said members and disposed above the hair of the wearer, said ornamentation serving to hide from view the mechanical structure of each of said members.
2. An ornament as defined in claim 1 wherein said second member includes a lace-like web, stretched upon said wire and into which a pin may be inserted for holding said second member in nestled reLation to the hair.
3. An ornament as defined in claim 1 wherein said second arcuate member comprises a pair of spaced hinge members at its wider portion and said first arcuate member comprises a pair of hinge members engaging with the respective hinge members of said second arcuate member.
