Abstract

A section of rug or carpeting is provided with a velcro type fastener extending outward from the bottom surface along the periphery. An adjacent section has a recess in its bottom surface extending inward from the periphery. A mating type velcro fastener is disposed in the recess and extends downward but does not fill the recess. The sections are joined in abutting relationship detachably by engaging the fasteners. The depth of the recess is adjusted relative to the overall thickness of the joined fasteners to insure that the connection is flush and level without bulges or depressions.

[ Feb.- 18, 1975 Perina 24/204 X Primary Examiner-Philip Dier [5 7] ABSTRACT 2 Claims, 7 Drawing Figures 1 RUGS WITH DETACI'IABLE SECTIONS SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The purpose of this invention is to enable a room sized rug or carpeting to be easily washed in a family type home washing machine. To this end the rug or carpeting is composed of small sections which are detachably engaged by velcro fastening means.
The sections must fit together in a smooth continuous manner without gaps, bulges or depressions. This is accomplished by securing one of the mating fasteners to the periphery of one section so it extends outward and is flat, the bottom surface of the fastener being flush with the bottom of the one section. The bottom of the adjacent section has a recess extending inward from the abutting periphery to overlie the one fastener. The other mating fastener is disposed in the recess and extends downward but does not fill the recess. The depth of the recess is adjusted to accommodate without extra or insufficient depth the overall thickness of the engaged fasteners whereby the desired fit is obtained.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings: FIG. 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of the invention;
FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 are views similar to FIG. 1 but showing slight modifications thereof;
FIG. 5 shows a rug section used in the arrangements of FIGS. l-4;
FIG. 6 shows another rug section used in the arrangements of FIGS. 1-4; and
FIG. 7 is a cross sectional detail view illustrating the interconnection of two adjoining rug sections.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to FIGS. 1-7, various interconnections are shown using like shaped and sized rug sections 10, in this example square shaped sections.
Strips of the two mating types of Velcro fasteners are employed, one type 12 having small loops in its top surface, the other type 14 having small vertical fingers in its bottom surface. Sections 10 carry either one type of the other along any edge which abuts an edge of an adjacent section.
Fasteners 12 are secured to and extend outward from a section edge with bottom surfaces of section and fastener horizontally aligned. Fasteners 14 are disposed in recesses 16 of rectangular shape which extend horizontally inward from an edge to the inside of the section.
The depth of each recess is adjusted to be essentially the same as the combined thickness of fasteners 12 and 14 when engaged to provide the desired smooth fit without bulge or depression or gap. Thus, there is a vertical space in the recess between the bottom of fastener 14 and the bottom of the section 10.
Depending upon the arrangement desired, sections 10 can each intermix fastener types or can use one or the other and, of course, border edges 18 will not use either type.
While l.have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, such is not to be considered as limiting its actual scope.
Having thus described this invention, what is asserted as new is:
1. Apparatus for detachably interconnecting adjacent sections of rugs or carpeting having abutting peripheries to eliminate gaps, bulges and depressions, said apparatus comprising:
a first type of velcro strip fastener secured to a peripheral edge of one section and extending outward and therealong, the bottom surface of the first fastener being horizontally aligned with the bottom surface of the section to which it is attached; and
a second and mating type of velcro strip fastener disposed in a recess in the abutting peripheral edge of the adjacent section, said recess extending inward from the edge and downward to the bottom surface of the adjacent section to overlie said first type fastener to enable both types of fasteners to be detachably engaged.
2. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein the depth of the recess is essentially equal to the overall thickness of the two engaged fasteners.

Claims (2)

1. Apparatus for detachably interconnecting adjacent sections of rugs or carpeting having abutting peripheries to eliminate gaps, bulges and depressions, said apparatus comprising: a first type of velcro strip fastener secured to a peripheral edge of one section and extending outward and therealong, the bottom surface of the first fastener being horizontally aligned with the bottom surface of the section to which it is attached; and a second and mating type of velcro strip fastener disposed in a recess in the abutting peripheral edge of the adjacent section, said recess extending inward from the edge and downward to the bottom surface of the adjacent section to overlie said first type fastener to enable both types of fasteners to be detachably engaged.
2. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein the depth of the recess is essentially equal to the overall thickness of the two engaged fasteners.
