Be it known that LJoNAs GRossMAN, M. D., of the city of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hygienic Bandages, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The invention relates to an improvement in hygienic bandages for women, and comprises two parts-that is to say,tl1e open or ladies drawers and the bandage proper or pellet.

My said invention is illustrated in the aceompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front View of the drawers applied tothe person; Fig. 2, a rear view ofthe same; Fig. 3, a front detail View of the drawers; Fig. 4, a detail plan view of the cushion or pad-supporting band; Fig. 5, a detail inside view ofthe cushion or pad, and Fig. 6 an edge view of the cushion or pad applied toits supporting-band.

The drawers a are made with a patch77 or piece of fabric,c,inserted in front and behind between the two leg parts, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the said patch or inserted piece serving the double purpose of keeping the leg parts the proper distance from each other and of enabling the wearer to occupy any desired position without thereby being liable to tear thedrawers at the joints of the leg parts. Moreover, the said inserted pieces will allow of extending the drawers in an upward direction, so that the same will likewise serve the purpose of keeping the lower part of the belly warm. The drawers are of the open stylethat is,they are open at a2 and for a short disn tance down the inside of each leg,and the front and rear patches a are made so as to` be less elastic than the material of the drawers. The front patch is provided with an attached hook or equivalent fastening device,g, and the rear patch is also provided with a similar hook or equivalent fastening, g'. These fastening-hooks are preferably of the elastic kind now generally employed as fasteni ngs for gloves,for the purpose of connecting with the drawers a the said bandage proper or pellet. The latter consists of a band, b, of suitable fabric, Fig. 4, preferably rendered impervious to water and carrying the cushion c, detachably connected with the fastening catches or hooks b of the said band i) by means of the eyes b2, the cushion c consisting of antiseptic wadding contained within a bag of gauze.

.The baud b is provided at each end with a rubber band, d, having an eye or ring, f, and allowing of being lengthened or shortened at will by means of the buckle e.

Vhen it is intended to apply my improved hygienic bandage, the antiseptic cushion c is attached to the impervious band b by catching the eyes b2 of the former upon the hooks b of the latter,by which means the bandage proper or pellet is formed. lThis being done, one of the eyes f of the strip b is hooked upon the fastening-catch g' in the rear of the drawers a, which are then put on by the patient, where upon the bandage proper or pellet is passed between the leg parts to the front, so that the other eyef ofthe said strip b may now be attached to the other fastening-hook, g, in the front part of the drawers. If required, the said pellet or bandage proper may be readily removed by separating the said front hook g from the front eyef, and will then be carried by the rear hook g only, and it may Vbe readjusted easily and fastened in its former position by passing the front eye f over the elastic front hook g again.

The advantages obtained by the said improved hygienic bandage as compared with those heretofore employed are chiefly as follows: By the insertion of the pieces a the leg parts are kept apart, so that the opening between the said leg parts is prevented from being drawn together while the drawers are stretched in being put on, which otherwise would take place and cause the said opening and its adjoining rims to underlie the cushion c and hold the latter out of contact with the body; but the effect of the said pieces a is to cause the said opening to remain extended laterally, so as to afford plenty of room to the said cushion c or the bandage proper. Consequently the drawers cannot be soiled by dirt or secretion, and after an operation there cannot be any contact between the said drawers and the parts of the body under medical treatment. Moreover, the keeping apart of the leg parts of the drawers by means of the inserted patches a will allow of readily and at any time passing the said pellet or bandage proper between the legs when the same is to be temporarily removed, and will prevent any lateral displacement of the said pellet or bandage while being worn. Lastly, by reason of the said arrangement the drawers a can be made to form a sash for keeping the lower part of the belly warm in connection with their office of forming part of a hygienic bandage. The arrangement described of the fasteninghook b and eyes b'2 allows of readily composing, and that of the similar hooks,g,and eyesf of readily connecting and disconnecting the bandage proper or pellet, while the rubber bands d and buckles c allow of making the said pellet shorter or longer and to make the same available in a moment for persons of any size.

By the use of this improved hygienic bandage the complicated and expensive bandages hitherto employed after operations on the fe male sexual organs-the perinaeum and the anus-may not only be dispensed with,but the said use will also allow of a better and easier inspection of the parts under medical treat- 25 ment, and of a ready, quick, and cheap eX- change of the soiled bandage proper or pellet for a fresh one.
