Description

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. SUTTON, OF ORESTON, IOVA, ASSIGNOR OF ONF-HALF TO S. S. XVHITE, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,420, dated September 11, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, GEORGE L. SUTTON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Oreston, in the county of Union, State of Iowa, haveiu vented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac eompauying drawings.
This invention has relation to ventilatingbuttons, and is especially designed for use in connection with mattresses, though, as will hereinafter appear, it may be used for other purposes, such as hats, (\e.
Among the objects in view are to providea strong and serviceable and easily'attached but ton, which may be provided at a minimum cost and manufactured with facility.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represeats a mattress provided with buttons constrncted in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of a mattress, or it may be a section of a hat. Fig. 3 is a detail in bottom plan of the base of the button. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the reticulated insectgnard. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the central securing-flange plate. Fig. 6 is a view of the baseplate; and Fig. 7 is a central transverse section, the parts being in position and secured to an article.
Like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the base-plate, which is formed with a central opening, 2,and radiating slits 3*, adapted to be bent inwardly to form a shank, 3, and securing-flange 1, the outer edge of the plate being prcfcrablyturued to form a bcad,5. Mounted upon the shank 3-prior to the forma tion of the flange 4 is a perforated plate, b, the outer periphery of which is turned to form a flange, 7. Against the flange 4-, formed on the shank 3, is placed a reticulated vermin-guard, 8, (see Fig. 4,) and over this is mounted the cap piece 9, having a central opening, 10, and having its periphery rearwardly flanged, as at 11, to lock over the flange 7, formed on the plate 6, all as clearly shown in Fig. 7.
(No model.)
12 represents amattress, to which a series of buttons, 13, constructed in accordance with my invention, are applied.
To apply a button, the shank 3 is inserted from the under side of the ticking through an opening formed therein, after which the central flanged locking-plate, 6, is mounted there on, the flanges of the plate being turned outward by any suitable device. Tongues formed by the slits 3 are spread, as shown in Fig. 7, to form the flange 4. The insect or vermin guard S is now placed in position and the cappiece 9 mounted over thesame, and its flanges 11 either sprung in position, so as to take over the flange7 of theplate 6, if previously formed, or by any suitable tool said flanges maybe clinched to lock with said flanges 7 of the plate 6, if it is undesirable to form the flanges on the cap-piece at the time of the stamping of the cap. By the provision of such a button a thorough and healthful ventilation of the mattress is obtained, and dust, insects, and vermin excluded.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A button having a base centrally perfo ated, as at 2, to form ashank, 3, and slitted, as at 3*, to form a flange, 4, and having a central plate, 6, mounted on the shank and havingits periphery flanged, as at 7, an insect-guard, 8, mounted over the opening 2 of the base, and the superimposed perforated cap-pieee,9, having peripheral flanges 11 to connect with the central plate, (3, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a mattress, of the button 13, consisting of the base-plate 1, hav ing the central opening and shank 3 and flanged, as at 4, the central plate, 6, flanged, as at 7, mounted on the shank, theinterposcd guard 8, and the superimposed cap-piece 9, having the central opening, 10, and peripheral locking-flanges ill, adapted to take over the flanges 7 on the central plate, 6, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. SUTTON.
