7 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures TOILET SEAT CHAIR This invention relates to a toilet seat chair which can be easily connected and adjusted to fit any conventional water closet or toilet found in the home.
In the prior patented art, chair-type toilet seats have been provided wherein the arms are connected to the top cover of the toilet so that when the cover is closed the arms will pivot downwardly through slots along the sides of the commode. In other conventional devices, attachments have been provided for coupling to the top of a standard toilet seatso that latches having wing nuts can be pivoted for connection to the seat and prevent its accidental removal. In a further embodiment of the prior art, hand rails consisting of U-shaped handles have been adapted for connection on each side of a standard toilet for use by small children and infirm adults. All of the prior art devices suffer from the disadvantage in that they cannot be firmly attached to the commode or toilet so that there is a possibility of them becoming accidentally dislodged and injuring the user.
In the present invention, however, a complete seat is provided for connection over a standard commode or toilet which has adjustable legs to properly elevate the height of the chair and a novel connection means for coupling the seat to the toilet to prevent its movement during use. Hand grips are also provided to help infirm persons and children to seat themselves without falling during the usage of the invention. The invention also provides several conveniences such as a magazine rack, a waste basket, ashtrays and drink supports so that the user, particularly an infirm person will not have to reach any great distance to locate a convenience.
It is therefore an object according to the present in vention to provide a toilet seat chair which can be easily and securely coupled to a standard conventional commode.
It is another object according to the present inven tion to provide a toilet seat chair which is simple in de sign, easy to manufacture and reliable in operation.
Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description considered in connection with the accompa nying drawing which discloses the embodiments of the invention. It is to be understood however that the draw ing is designed for the purpose of illustration only and not as a definition of the limits of the invention.
In the drawing wherein similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several view:
FIG. I is a perspective view slightly in elevation of the toilet seat chair according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along section 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view taken along section 3-3 of FIG. 1-,
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view taken along section 4-4 of FIG. I; and
FIG. 5 is a view of one side of the toilet seat chair of FIG. 1.
Referring to FIGS. 1-5 there is shown the toilet seat chair generally designated as connected to a conventional toilet fixture 31. The chair includes a pair of spaced apart arm rests l6 and 17, having grips 21 formed near their front. Between the arm rests is located a seat 12 having a conventional oval opening 13 with a forward slot 14 communicative to oval 13. The seat portion is adapted for disposal over the opening of the commode 30. Support railings 12!) which are connected to the chair provides support for seat 12 when it is in use. At the rear portion of seat 12 is coupled a back rest l5 preferably constructed of a padded material such as foam rubber. Back rest I5 and seat portion I2 are connected together by hinged attachments 121.: so that the seat can he pivoted upwardly as shown in detail in FIG. 5.
On one side of the chair is provided a magazine rack 19 and a pair of book racks 18 within easy reach of the user. ()n the opposite side, recessed into the surface of the chair is provided a waste receptacle 23 which has a pivoted door 24, pivoted on pin 25 so that small articles of paper can be disposed of. Above the waste receptacle 23 is provided a circular recess 22 for holding a drinking glass or coffee cup. On the opposite arm is provided an ashtray 20 recessed into the arm of the chair. The four bottom corners of the chair are provided with legs 26 for receiving threadably coupled feet 27 which screw into the legs 26 as shown in detail in FIG. 3.
In order to install the toilet seat chair of the present invention on a standard commode, the conventional toilet seat is removed leaving its upstanding hinge supports 29 as shown in detail in FIGS. 4 and 5. The chair is then pushed into place over the commode 30 and an elongated bolt 28 is inserted through an opening in arm 17 so that it passes through the holes in hinge supports 29 and exits through a corresponding opening in arm 16. A nut or fastener can then be threadably coupled to the exposed end of bolt 28. The width of the commode is approximately equal to the distance between the insides of arms 16 and 17 so that there will be very lateral clearance between the chair and the commode. Feet 27 are then adjusted so that seat 12 is disposed immediately above the opening 30 of the commode. The commode is generally bolted to the floor of the bathroom so that with the chair being secured by means of bolt 28 to the commode and being supported on four legs with adjustable feet 27, the chair is securely mounted to the commode and restricted against any lateral or longitudinal movement.
The toilet seat chair of the present invention provides a convenient and comfortable support for the user, and is particularly useful for infirm persons and small children who may have difficulty safely using a conventional commode. The toilet seat chair of the present invention prevents the user for accidentally falling side ways onto the hard surface of a bathroom floor. The several conveniences provided in the present invention reduce the need for the user to have to reach excessive distances since these conveniences are provided along the arm rests and at. the sides of the chair.
The chair is preferably constructed of a rigid sheet material such as fiber glass, plastic or other decorative material. The seat and the back rest are preferably constructed of a vinyl covered foam material.
While only a few embodiments of the present invention have been shown and described, it will be obvious that many changes and modifications may be made thereunto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
