FIG.4
PILLOW BOX BLANK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is usual in the fabrication of paperboard cartons of the pillow-pack type to provide a pair of cover flaps which are glued together along one edge and which define a carton having a generally elliptical cross-section, and to form end flaps which fold into the elliptical ends of the carton, and whichmay be opened to provide access into the interior of the carton. The pillow box blank of the present invention is appropriately shaped, slit and cut so that it may be fonned into such a configuration.
In addition, however, the blank of the invention provides pedestals at one end of the carton so that the carton may be placed upright on one end on a supporting surface in a self-standing position. Moreover, a window is formed in one of the cover flaps, as mentioned above, so that the product contained in the carton may be displayed, the window having side flaps which serves to hold the product firmly in the carton.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a plan view of a blank which is shaped, slit and scored so that it can be folded into a pillow-type of carton, in accordance with one embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective representation of a pillowpack carton formed from the blank of FIG. 1, and in a partially assembled condition;
FIG. 3 is a perspective representation of the pillowpack carton formed from the blank of FIG. I, and in its finished state; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the carton of FIG. 3 with a product contained therein and reveaied through a window fonned in one cover flap of the carton.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENT As shown in FIG. I, a one-piece blank is provided for forming'an ellipsoidal-shaped pillow-pack carton. The blank has a first panel 10 and a second panel 12, each having arcuately-shaped ends, the panels being separated by a fold scoreline 14 which extends from one end of the panels l0, [2 to the other.
The panel 10 has arcuatelyv-shaped scorelines I6 and [8 at each end thereof, and these scorelines each form an ellipse with the corresponding arcuately-shaped ends of the panel. The scorelines l6 and I8 form elliptical end panels 20 and 22.
The panel 12 has an arcuately-shaped scoreline 24 at its left-hand end which forms an ellipse with the corresponding end of the panel [2. The scoreline 24 and the left-hand end of the panel 12 form an elliptical-shaped end panel 26.
The panel I has slits therein adjacent the arcuate scoreline I6 which form a first rectangular-shaped pedestal for the carton; and the panel 12 has slits therein adjacent the scoreline 24 which form a second rectangular-shaped pedestal for the carton, the pedestals being designated 28 and 30 respectively.
The panel also has a pair of longitudianl scorelines 34 and 36 therein and corresponding slots to form two flaps 38 and 40 which may be turned to provide a support for the product, and to permit the product to be revealed through the aperture formed by the flaps. The end panel 22 may have a hanging hole 42 therein.
The panel [2 has a further scoreline 44 extending 2 adjacent its outer edge from one end to the other. The scoreline 44 defines a flap 46 which may be folded inwardly and glued on its reverse side to the outer edge of the cover flap 10.
Although the flaps 38 and .40 are shown in the panel 10 to form a window in that panel, the flaps may be formed in the panel 12, to form a window in the latter panel, if so desired.
As mentioned above, the representation of FIG. 2 shows the carton in a partially assembled form. FIG. 3 shows the completed carton without the product, and FIG. 4 shows the completed carton with a product supported therein and displayed through the opening in the front of the carton. 1
The invention provides, therefore, a blank which may be easily and quickly formed into a self-standing pillowpack type of carton which also has the feature of supporting and revealing a product within the carton.
It will be appreciated that although one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, modifications may be made. It is intended in the claims to cover the modifications which come within the spirit and scope of the invention.
