SURGICAL A'PPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,106, dated February 5, 1889.
Application tiled December 3, 1887. Serial No. 256,862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
le it known that I, JAMES Il. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, rcslding in the city and county of Philadelphia., State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Preventing or Checking Involuntary Spermatic Discharges, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a device for preventing or checking involuntary sperinatic discharges, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely claimed.
Figure l represents a top or plan View of a device embodying inyinvention. Fig. 2 rep rescnts a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two ligures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of thc device, consisting of the front portion or cap, A,wl1ich is of the forni of the organ to which it is applied, and is constructed of light and thin material, being preferably of open or skeleton form, as shown in the drawings, so as to bear upon the person as littlegas possible. The part A2, to which the cap portion is connected, is approximatelyv cylindrical in form and slotted at its side, as at a, so as to be readily adapted to different sizes and also to yield as the organ enlarges.
B represents clasps, (one or more,) which are connected with the sides of the cap by means of cords, links, rin or chains (l, said clasps being provided with slides I), whereby they may be held firmly in position.
The operation is as follows: The cap A is fitted on the head of the organ and the Vclasps are attached tothe hair around said organ, whereby the cap is prevented from dropping off, it being noticed that the device hangs loosely and easily in position without liabilityvto injure the contiguous parts, the connections C being short and iiexible and avoiding tension on the hair. IVhen a discharge is likely to occur, the device is elevated with the organ, 'and the connections C are drawn sufficiently taut as t-o pull the hair, the effect of which is to awaken the sleeper, who is thereby enabled to prevent or check the discharge.
I ain aware that devices of this character are constructed having pressure-plates adapted te bear upon the head of the organ; also, that the same are constructed with pins which are forced into the organ, lacerating the same; also, that bands inclosing the body of the organ have attaching devices secured thereto; but I am not aware that the construction herein described and claimed is old, wherein the cord and clasps are secured tothe cap which incloses the head of the organ, so that when the latter is erected the cords are drawn, so that the fastenings pull vupon the parts to which they are attached.

l. A device for the purposenamed, consisting of a cap or front portion, A', and a main portion, A2, theV latter of cylindrical form, slotted at one side, and havingfastening devices connected to said cap by cords, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A device for the purpose named, consisting of a cap or front portion, A, of skeleton form, a main portion, A2, rigidly secured t0 said cap and having a slotted side, non-extensible chain C, secured to said portion A2, and clasps B, the said cap A projecting in front of said portion A2, substantially as and for the purpose described.
